Dr Antony Collis: accused of a series of assaults on a string of young girls

A former GP appeared in court yesterday accused of a series of indecent assaults on young girls over an eightyear period.
Antony Collis also faced a string of charges of making indecent images of children.
The bespectacled 58-year-old, wearing a grey suit and red tie, pleaded not guilty to a total of 22 charges when he stood in the dock at Lewes Crown Court.
Collis, a father of three, formerly worked as a family doctor at Belmont Surgery in the East Sussex market town of Wadhurst.
He is alleged to have indecently assaulted seven girls between June 1995 and August 2003, when they were all under the age of 14.
Collis, of Stonegate, near Wadhurst, faces a total of 13 charges relating to the girls.
The first alleged victim claims to have been indecently assaulted four times between June 1995 and June 1999.

A second victim alleges she was targeted twice - first in 1997 and again between 1998 and 2003.
Three other girls claim to have been assaulted in June and August 2003.
Collis is accused of assaulting his sixth victim three times between June 2002 and April 2003 and attacking the seventh girl between June 1999 and December 2002.
He is also accused of nine counts of making indecent images of children between April 2004 and October 2008.
After a 15-minute hearing, in which Collis spoke only to confirm his name and deny all the charges, Judge Richard Brown released him on bail and the case was adjourned for a trial to start in October.

Collis and his wife Jill, 59, live in a £600,000 detached property set back from a country road near the pretty East Sussex village of Stonegate.
The couple have been married for 35 years and have three grown-up children, Richard, James and Lynn.
Collis worked for twenty five years at the Belmont Surgery, where he was senior partner.
It is just off the High Street in Wadhurst and a 10-minute drive from his home.
Many of the 5,000 residents in the picturesque and prosperous market town are London commuters, who make the one-hour journey to Charing Cross on regular trains from the station, a mile north of the centre.
The town's white-fronted cottages and grand Georgian properties were built between the 16th and 18th centuries when it was a hub of the local iron industry.
Many grave markers at the church of St Peter and St Paul are made of cast iron.
