Sorry Baby, I Changed My Mind.... Empty Sorry Baby, I Changed My Mind....

Post  Guest Sun 6 Jun - 15:02

Dozens of British women are having abortions after undergoing expensive IVF treatment and then changing their minds, prompting concerns that babies are being treated like 'designer goods.'

Shocking figures show that 80 abortions are carried out each year on the NHS in England, Wales and Scotland on women who have become pregnant through IVF.

Splitting with a partner and pressure to start a family were among the reasons given by some women for terminating their pregnancies.

Up to half of the abortions involved women aged 18-34, according to data from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, obtained by the Sunday Times.

The trend has shocked fertility experts and family groups.

'These women can’t be surprised to be pregnant; you can’t have an IVF pregnancy by accident,' said Professor Bill Ledger, a member of the HFEA and head of reproductive and developmental medicine at Sheffield University.

'I had no idea there were so many post-IVF abortions - and each one is a tragedy.' Fertility doctor Mohamed Taranissi called for an inquiry.

'It is a matter that needs to be looked at. The HFEA should be much more open with the data they have,' he told the Sunday Times.

Former Tory minister Ann Widdecombe said women who terminated pregnancies for non-medical reasons were treating babies like 'designer goods.'

'If the law was being applied properly, people wouldn’t be able to get an abortion just because they changed their minds,' she said.

Ann Furedi, head of BPAS, formerly the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, claimed that all abortion doctors saw at least one woman a year requesting a termination after undergoing IVF.

'For infertile people, overcoming the problem becomes a goal in itself,' she said.

'Sometimes it is only when women get pregnant that they can allow themselves to ask the question about whether it is really what they want.'

Nursing supervisor Jessica Rogers, from the Bristol Marie Stopes clinic, said one patient, who had conceived twins through IVF, underwent an abortion after discovering her husband was having an affair.

'She was having his babies and she just didn’t want to continue with it on her own. I don’t think he even found out she had been pregnant,' she said.

The HFEA said abortions were not regulated, but stressed that all patients who underwent IVF were assessed before treatment.

TFG When I worked as a receptionist at various NHS Clinics I sometimes worked during the Family Planning
Appointments, keeping Records of the Patients. Most were girls not long out of School either wanting the
3 month jab instead of having to remember to take the pill or abortions and they didn"t know who the Father was.!!! There is absolutely no reason for any young girl to become pregnant today and as long as it is made easy Women to have abortions. for whatever reason, they won"t bother taking precautions.

I think you've missed the point. This is a scandalous story about women planning to have babies by IVF then changing their minds.

Perhaps they are so desperate to have a baby they will do anything, they get pregnant and realise their husband doesn't share the same obsession as she does, so they wake up and smell the coffee, and think balls to that and have an abortion. Not pretty at all I know, but perhaps kinder in the long run than bringing in yet another unwanted child in to the world to leave with nannies and carers? (and possible abductors?)

Being someone who has suffered years of 'unexplained' infertility and undergoing IVF l think l'm safe in saying that of those 80 abortions l bet the vast majority are babies who have some sort of disability. (And no there are not more disabilities in IVF babies than any conceived by sex itself).

No-one does IVF lightly and there's plenty of time to 're-assess' yourself so absolutely no way would any woman get pregnant by IVF only to find her husband doesn't share the same 'obsession'. Where would he have been when they had consultations, signed forms, underwent tests, doing his sperm sample, and paying for all that - and that's BEFORE treatment.

As usual when it comes to IVF the same half baked ideas and comments.

Oh, and l meant to say l read the Daily Wail/Daily Heil and l've yet to read a positive story about IVF in there!!

Listen to Margaret, folks; she speaks the truth. It's not a procedure for the faint hearted.

OOps, my mistake......sorry.!

Nevertheless, both stories share a point IMO and that is contempt for the value of life.

Do you think someone so desperate for a baby that they have to resort to invasive medical treatment has an abortion just for the fun of it??

The Mail has picked out one story which cannot be verified for truth, what about the 79 others??

TBH l'm more concerned about the thousands of women who see abortion as a form of birth control, that's where the scandal is.

I wouldn't be surprised. Some time ago there was a programme here that showed that couples who had waited years to adopt a child had changed their minds and 'returned' the child they had finally adopted.
