Mother kept toddlers in filth

26 April 2010

A mum barricaded her son in his filth-smeared bedroom and left her daughter stinking of urine. The three-year-old girl and two-year-old boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, were discovered by two friends of their 22-year-old mother.

The women, who were cousins, were drinking with the mum at her home in Sunderland.

But she became upset about splitting with her boyfriend and repeatedly ran into the street, where she fell and had to be carried inside.

When one of the women went to check on the children, she discovered the little girl was wearing no clothes and her room smelt strongly of urine.

She went into the boy's bedroom and found the door was wedged shut with a broom.

Prosecutor Katherine Dunn told Newcastle Crown Court there was a "vile" smell in the room, the walls were smeared with faeces and the toddler was wearing just trainers and a vest.

She was so shocked she snatched up the little boy and took him to her own home, returning with her boyfriend to collect his sister.

Police were called and the mother pleaded guilty to two charges of child cruelty.

Miss Dunn said the mum told police the door was wedged closed to stop the boy getting out and falling down the stairs and that he had a problem with smearing faeces.

Social Services became involved, but the woman was allowed to keep custody of her two children and a third she gave birth to in the last few months.

Defence barrister Bob Spragg said the incident was isolated and the woman was doing extremely well on a community order for an unrelated assault charge.

Recorder Graham Hyland QC sentenced her to a 12-month community order with supervision, saying: "You have pleaded guilty to two serious offences of cruelty to your own very young children.

"I don't know what caused you to behave towards them in the way you did.

"I have no doubt you are thoroughly ashamed of yourself."
