A nursery school was forced to shut today over claims a young child had been sexually assaulted.

Detectives investigating the alleged incident in Aberystwyth, Mid Wales, have arrested a suspect.

The nursery is registered to care for 20 children, mostly aged two and three, and has been operating for 30 years.
Officers have seized a computer and mobile phone in the case echoing the investigation into the Little Ted's Nursery in Plymouth which led to the imprisonment of nursery assistant Vanessa George last year.

She had admitted sexually abusing children in her care and swapping images of the abuse with two other paedophiles.
The tearful leader of the playgroup embroiled in the latest scandal said last night: 'We don't want to talk at the moment. I can't confirm anything.'

The suspect, who has not been named, was released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: 'The playgroup has temporarily closed pending further investigation and this will be reviewed daily.
'We take any allegation of this kind seriously and have specially trained officers to deal with any victims and any alleged offenders.'
The force refused to confirm whether the suspect is male or female or whether they worked at the nursery.

The playgroup is registered with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales, a body set-up by the Welsh Assembly.

An Assembly spokesman said: 'We are aware of the alleged incident, which is the subject of a police investigation and therefore we are unable to comment further.'

All the children attending the nursery come from Aberystwyth and surrounding villages and are looked after by four staff in total.

In 2007 an inspection report found the playgroup had 'good features' with 'no important shortcomings'.

I don't think that "insufficient evidence" is any cause for celebration. Oh, dear - another one? Playgroup shut after toddler is 'sexually assaulted' 303636

Playgroup re-opens after alleged assault

24 February 2010

AN Aberystwyth playgroup, where a sexual assault allegedly took place earlier this month, re-opened its doors on Monday - with no adverse effect on attendance reported.

St Padarn’s Playgroup, in Llanbadarn Road, was closed for more than a week before the half-term break, pending a police investigation into an alleged sexual assault on 4 February.

A male member of staff arrested in relation to the allegation remains on bail while the police investigation continues.

The playgroup’s committee had voluntarily closed the playgroup, following a recommendation by the Local Safeguarding Children Board. But when St Padarn’s Playgroup re-opened on Monday morning, it was “business as usual”.

A spokesperson for St Padarn’s Playgroup said: “We are not aware of any parent having withdrawn a child from St Padarn’s Playgroup, and we re-opened on Monday as anticipated.

“We hope that the investigation ends well for those concerned. We have nothing further to say on any other aspect at this stage.”

A notice on the door of the playgroup building last week stated that, after consultation with parents of children attending the playgroup, it was planned to re-open after the half-term break.

St Padarn’s Playgroup is registered by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales, a regulatory body operating on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government, St Padarn’s Playgroup was “routinely inspected” just two days before the sexual assault allegation was made.

NO CHARGES in playground sex assault case

Mar 31 2010

A person arrested at a toddlers’ playground at the centre of a sex assault inquiry will not be charged, police said today.

St Padarn’s Playgroup in Aberystwyth, west Wales, was closed after a person was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault on February 9.

The unnamed person was released almost immediately on bail pending further inquiries by the police.

Now police have confirmed that no further action will be taken against the person.

The playgroup itself reopened during the final week of February after a two-week enforced closure.

News of an arrest connected to a suspected sex assault at the playgroup was greeted last month with a mixture of shock and horror.

Some in the community expressed disbelief that a potential suspect had been released by the police.

But Ceredigion Council leader Keith Evans cautioned at the time that the allegation might well prove to be unfounded.

Dyfed Powys Police said today a file had been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following the conclusion of its investigation.

“The CPS has examined the evidence and assisted the police from the early investigative stages of the case through to its conclusion,” a police spokeswoman said.

“The CPS has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to charge, and thus no further action will be taken against the person arrested at this time.”

She added: “Dyfed-Powys Police and CPS take all reports of sexual assault seriously and investigate all allegations with specially trained officers and prosecutors.”
