Woman admits sex attacks on boys

Tuesday, 20 April 2010

A 62 year old woman has pleaded guilty to a series of sex attacks on two young boys dating back over 20 years.

Audrey Elizabeth Beck from Ballyhill Road, Nutt's Corner, County Antrim, Northern Ireland admitted 14 charges of indecently assaulting one of the boys when he was aged between ten and 11 and seven similar offences against another boy when he was aged between 12 and 14.

At Antrim Crown Court today on Tuesday Mrs Beck, who has no children, listened to the proceedings through a hearing aid provided by officials and she also pleaded guilty to a single count of gross indecency against one of the boys.

Although no specific details of the offences were given, the court heard the offences were carried out between May 1986 and January 1992.

Her two victims, now in their 30s, and who can't be identified, were in court to hear Mrs Beck guilty pleas.

A prosecution lawyer said the offences came to light when one of the men went to PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) in 2007 to complain about the attacks on him.

The police then approached the second man who confirmed that he had also been assaulted by Mrs Beck.

The lawyer added that Mrs Beck's guilty pleas had spared the two victims the ordeal of having to give evidence.

The case against Mrs Beck, freed on continuing bail, was adjourned by Judge David Smyth for pre-sentence reports until next month.

Dog breeder jailed over sex attacks

Friday, 28 May 2010

A 62-year-old woman championship dog breeder who admitted a series of sex attacks on two young boys dating back over 20 years, was jailed on Friday for a year, and will have to serve three years probation on her release.

Audrey Elizabeth Beck from Ballyhill Road, Nutt's Corner, Crumlin, admitted 14 charges of indecently assaulting one of the boys when he was aged between 10 and 11 and seven similar offences against another boy when he was aged between 12 and 14.

Beck - married, but with no children of her own - also admitted committing gross indecency with one of the boys during the time she preyed on both youngsters between May 1986 and January 1992, when she was aged between 38 and 44.

Antrim Crown Court Judge David Smyth QC warned her that all such sentences are "scrutinised to ensure ... they are not excessively lenient".

Judge Smyth also told Beck that the period of probation also allowed him "to achieve both the objects of punishment and of protection of the community".

The judge said he had "little doubt the revulsion felt by the community has had an impact on you" and that her days as a dog breeder are over as, "very understandably you are no longer welcome at any such events".

Prosecuting lawyer Neil Connor said that one of the victims, both of whom are now in their 30s, had been left traumatised by what occurred and "it has had an negative impact on him".

He added that while the other victim was "quite adamant" he had no lasting suffering, he too would have found it extremely difficult to give evidence and that Beck's pleas were of "great assistance in this case".

The indecent assaults started with inappropriate touching or kissing, but progressed to sexual intercourse at her former home, or in her car or in other locations.

Beck was put on the Sex Offenders' Register indefinitely.
