William and Kate. What a difference from Charles and Diana
When the engagement of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer was announced in February 1981, Diana was 19 and Charles was 32. This is what Wikipedia has to say about it:
Sounds very formal, with 'dates,' and formal meetings with the queen. It was widely rumoured at the time that Diana was chosen as a bride for Charles because she was young enough and protected enough to be a virgin and that she had actually been subjected to virginity tests. We are led to believe from the above Wiki article and from information at the time that the couple went on quite formal dates and there was definitely no hanky-panky. The heir to the throne, even at that time, had to be seen to be marrying a woman who was untarnished.
William and Kate met at university. Theirs has been a long relationship, with well-publicised holidays together, including the holiday where William is said to have proposed in the hut they shared.
There was an article last week, in the Mail I think, that sought to assure the readers that Kate had been saving herself for her 'Prince Charming,' though there was also a photo of Kate with two young men, including a boyfriend from her school.
In today's Mail on Sunday, in which Bishop Pete Broadbent says he'll give them 7 years, we learn that William and Kate are already living together.
How times have changed! With Charles and Diana, it had to be seen to be very formal, no hanky-panky, but now it's just matter of fact that Kate and William are already ensconced in one of the royal palaces.
So, what's all this about William taking a week to propose with the ring in his rucksack? I'd bet he's been told to either get married to Kate or find someone he would get married to. And I really don't think that something with such monetary as well as historical value as Princess Diana's ring would be in a rucksack in a ramshackle hut.
Prince Charles, who had known Diana for several years, took a serious interest in her as a potential bride during the summer of 1980, when they were guests at a country weekend, where she watched him play polo. The relationship developed as he invited her for a sailing weekend to Cowes aboard the royal yacht Britannia, followed by an invitation to Balmoral Castle, the Windsor family's Scottish home, to meet his family. Diana was well received at Balmoral by Queen Elizabeth II, by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the Queen Mother. The couple then had several dates in London. Diana and Charles had been seeing each other for about six months when he proposed on 3 February 1981 at a dinner for two at Buckingham Palace. He knew she planned a holiday for the next week, and hoped she would use the time to consider her answer.[3] Diana accepted, but their engagement was kept secret for the next few weeks.

The couple currently share a floor of Clarence House with Prince Harry. But the living quarters, where Prince Charles and Camilla also stay when in London, are not spacious and the couple want their ‘own pad’.

Re: William and Kate. What a difference from Charles and Diana
Sorry, but in my opinion that ring is cursed and if I were Kate Middleton, I would want my OWN ring, even supposing it came from Elizabeth Duke. Charles was TOLD to get married. I read that he even told Diana on their wedding night that he didn't love her. And "that ring" was simply picked out of a tray in Garrards, with no thought or consideration given to it at all. It's not even a good quality sapphire, there is too much of a green tinge to it. I don't think I would want to marry any man who brings the ghost of his mother into the relationship, with her ring and her home and the constant comparisons. I actually feel sorry for Kate Middleton!

I agree with you about the ring, TFG. I felt quite horrified when I read that Diana's ring had been given to Kate. Charles had known the 19 year-old Diana for several years, when she was a child and he was an adult. Charles was so weak, imo, that he just went along with the royals' plans, but carried on with his private affairs. That ring was never a symbol of love or commitment and is tainted with lies.

I found it quite touching that William had chosen to give Kate his beloved mother's engagement ring, although it was strange to see it on Kate's finger as it brought back memories of Charles and Diane's awkward press conference and the regal mumberer's now infamous words: ' whatever love means'.
Kate Middleton seems to be perfectly nice and comes from a happy, stable home which will help her cope in her new future IMO. She and William appear to be very comfortable together, although all the talk of 'giggling' seemed a tad immature to me!!
Kate is marrying a handsome prince who gives the impression of being kind and loving and will enjoy a life of immense privilege, prestige and luxury, so I really don't see any reason to be anxious for her. Hopefully, William will make a better spouse than either of his parents did.

A couple of years ago, Kate's family suffered at the hands of some of William's upper-class associates: they spoke in derisory terms about Kate's parents selling party goods and (I can't recall what they actually said) their social skills in upper-class circles.
