David Chaytor becomes the first of the MPs charged over fraudulent expense claims to be jailed - 18 months at HM's pleasure. Given Chaytor pleaded guilty, no doubt the others who have pleaded not guilty can expect at least similar sentences if found guilty.

Post  malena stool Fri 7 Jan - 21:18

At last justice is catching up with the obscene thieves who have abused the power vested in them by the electorate. 18 months is however in my opinion not long enough, he'll be out again inside a year. He should be serving 5 years in my opinion also have had fines and court expenses totalling the amount he stole imposed.....plus interest earned.

It ts also to be hoped he serves his time in the general population of a real prison with bars and genuine restrictions on liberty and visiting, unlike another ex jailbird ex Tory MP, the disgraced Jeffery Archer, a so called Lord who served two years for perjury was allowed out for book signing and party going.

Those who abuse the public trust should be seen to be made examples of...They are abusing the laws they themselves have taken a hand in formulating and passing. They are lucky they are subjected to British laws and not some East Asian laws.. They use their laws properly and tend not to get re-offenders.

So, as wjk says.."Well done that judge." MPs' Expense Claims - Court Cases 307691

But may the next judge do better.

If researchers in the future were to use our present batch of light fingered deceitful lying and thieving MPs as a comparison for honesty in the workplace, just what conclusions would they draw as to the honesty of the remainder of the population?

I don't know how Shahid Malik avoided prosecution. He has a house in London, which he bought before he entered parliament, which he claimed as his second home. His constituency house is rented at a very low rent, and this he claims as his first home. Also, he sold a property in another part of his constituency, which he avoided Capital Gains Tax on by claiming that that was his first home. Then, against the rules, he claimed extra for using a room in his rented house as an office. How did he get away with all that?

Perhaps they were worried he would accuse them of racism? Look at the Asian grooming gang in Derby that took agesd to come to fruitation as the cops were worried about being accused.

I saw that and I have left a comment on the Sky News article. I lived in Manchester in the 80s and most of my friends were Muslim women, because that was the kind of area I was living in. One of the Muslim women, whose husband was known to have lots of dalliance, told me that it was just accepted by Muslim women that their husbands would 'use,' white women, whom they saw as being 'immoral,' because of how they dressed and behaved, but Muslim women were expected to be 'pure,' when they were married and so were off-limits.

As for Shahid Malik, I am absolutely certain that he got away with it because he would have cried 'racism,' and we have serious islamophobia in this country: an irrational fear of upsetting Muslims.

We can't say it out loud though can we? We would be accused of racism if we did. Look at that Asian MP in Bolton (I think) who said Inshallah after every sentence he uttered, then made a comment on how many moslem mps there will be in 20 years time and he got a standing ovation.
I'm am all for equality, but now it seems that equality is only for certain people.

I don't know the specifics of that case but virtually every MP who sold a property manipulated the private residence exemption to aviod CGT. Unfortuantely the tax rules pretty much make it easy to do so. A simple rule that no profit should be made from a property partly or wholly "funded" out of the public purse seems highly desirable. It was also absurd that MPs can claim a monthly "additional" food allowance. It is not as if they eat in two places at the same time. The whole expenses system is corrupt and it is noteworthy that even some of the reasonable disclosure measures introduced after the scandals of a couple of years ago are already being backtracked on allowing redaction of information and therefore the possibility of public scrutiny.

Second crooked elected representative (this one still an MP) pleads guilty to expenses fraud:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12157768

MP Eric Illsley is under pressure to stand down after admitting he fraudulently claimed more than £14,000 in parliamentary expenses.

He pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court to three false accounting charges over claims for his second home.

He is due to be sentenced in about 4 weeks after reports.

Another corrupt parliamentarian thief waiting to be sentenced, only this one took it to the line before changing his plea to guilty.
The arrogance of this criminal is astounding, to remain in parliament discussing affairs of state and continue to pose as the representative of the electorate shows his greed and the shallowness of his principles.

We can but hope the sentence reflects the abuse of public trust and the abhorrent lies told by this so called "Honourable Member" to avoid paying for his deceit and duplicity.

The Communist States have the ideal sentence for corrupt officials and it works...they do not re-offend!

MP Guilty Of Expenses Fraud Told To Quit

Share Comments (93)
6:14pm UK, Tuesday January 11, 2011
Carole Erskine and Ruth Barnett, Sky News Online
Eric Illsley has come under pressure to resign after becoming the first sitting MP to be convicted of expenses fraud.

Labour leader Ed Miliband said Illsley should "do the right thing" and resign as an MP.
"I don't think he can be a credible voice for his constituents having pleaded guilty to such a serious offence," he added.
A senior party source said they would work with other colleagues to remove him from Parliament if he does not go voluntarily.
The Prime Minister's spokesman said David Cameron believed it was "untenable" for the politician to stay on.
"'If someone has defrauded people they are there to represent, that it is quite an untenable position," the spokesman said.
Illsely was suspended from the Labour Party following the allegations and sits as an independent after being re-elected in May's general election.
He will automatically lose his seat if he is sentenced to more than 12 months in prison.

Former MP David Chaytor has been jailed over the expenses scandal
Shadow chancellor Alan Johnson told Sky News: "I don't think Eric can carry on representing people in Parliament when he has admitted to such a serious charge."
The former Labour representative for Barnsley Central pleaded guilty to three charges of false accounting relating to three years of expenses claimed on his second home in London.
He had previously denied dishonestly claiming more than £25,000 but in court his barrister said Illsley admitted wrongly claiming a revised sum of around £14,500.
The claims had been made for council tax, telephone usage, service charges and maintenance, and insurance and repairs at his second home in Kennington, South London.
During the five-minute hearing Illsley spoke only to confirm his pleas, saying "guilty" to the three charges.
Prosecutor Peter Wright QC said the Crown accepted the revised figure for the dishonest claims.
Call me naive, but I always thought if an MP goes to prison they automatically lose their seat - but it seems that is not the case.
Read Glen Oglaza's blog on Eric Illsley
Simon Clements, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, said after the hearing: "This is a significant sum of money and the grossly inflated claims he submitted could not be attributed to an oversight of accounting error - indeed he claimed that the expenses system was a way of supplementing Members' salaries.
"By his guilty pleas he has accepted that he was dishonest in making these claims.
"As an elected representative, Eric Illsley took advantage of the trust placed in him by his constituents to act honourably on their behalf.
"Instead, he siphoned off public money into his own pockets and betrayed those who rightly expected the highest standards of integrity from him as a Member of Parliament."
A spokesperson for the Labour Party said: "Eric Illsley had already been suspended from the Labour Party.
"As a result, Eric Illsley is suspended from the Whip and cannot attend any Labour Party meeting.
"It would not be appropriate to comment further as the legal process is still ongoing."
On Friday David Chaytor became the first person to be jailed over the expenses scandal.
He is to serve 18 months after admitting he forged tenancy documents and invoices to falsely claim more than £22,000 of taypayers' money for rent and IT work.

Isn't it just - and that he can still draw his MP's salary at least until he's sentenced. That seems very wrong (imho)

Not just salary but also expenses under the system he has abused. No doubt he will also continue to be entitled to his full pension rights even if he goes despite cheating the public purse.

Eric Illsley has announced he will stand down as MP before he is sentenced (thus no doubt hanging on to his pay and expenses for up to 4 weeks). Having not stood down at the last election despite knowing he was guilty of wrondoing he will now also cost the taxpayer another £200K for the cost of a by-election.

I read about that on the web site. Sorry, but I'm too tired to find it! This man was/is a lecturer at Coventry University, I think. He signed students up for extra tuition and got their credit card details. Then hundreds of pounds went from their accounts, instead of, say, the £60 they agreed to. One woman paid for some help for her daughter and found money being siphoned out of her account.

Actually he was a candidate, not an MP.
