Phone hacking evidence could be televised at judicial inquiry

4 Oct 2011

Evidence from celebrities, politicians and relatives of crime victims could be televised as part of the judicial inquiry into media phone-hacking.

Discreet fixed television cameras will be installed in the courtroom to record evidence from witnesses who could include Sienna Miller, J K Rowling, Madeleine McCann's parents Kate and Gerry, and the family of Milly Dowler, who are all key participants in the tribunal led by Lord Justice Leveson. Broadcast footage would show witnesses being examined.

At a preliminary hearing for the Leveson Inquiry today the counsel for the inquiry told the High Court that "the provisional view of the chairman is that oral evidence sessions should be televised".

Last month Lord Justice Leveson granted "core participant" status to 46 applicants which gives them the right to a hearing and a lawyer to represent them during part one of the inquiry.

Other alleged phone-hacking victims to win core participant status include former Labour ministers John Prescott, Tessa Jowell and Chris Bryant; former Scotland Yard chief Brian Paddick; and actor Hugh Grant.

News International lawyers today told the High Court how "stressful" and "daunting" the business of testifying in court will be for its executives.

Roger Davies QC told Lord Justice Leveson: "This could be a quite daunting experience." He said that "documents flashing up on screens without prior notice" would add to the "stressful" element.

I hope it is very stressful for certain core participants as well.

It might be interesting watching and listening to the McCanns statements of interest and their need to be considered as core participants when their spokesman Clarence Mitchell, publicly stated he did not believe their phones had been hacked. Using that as a guidline I or indeed anyone who lives in this sceptred isle could be given the option to be a core participant.

They are no better than status seeking narcisists and it will eventually lead to their undoing.

Now, why would 'evidence' need to be recorded?

Sends a discreet message to K & G, this is not as plain sailing as they would hope.

Dont think it would work as nothing has been reported in the UK press so they cant claim sub judicea (sp?), but it would not matter anyway as it is a Portugese case not a UK case. They would have to prove that they could not get a fair trial in Portugal because of hacking but as far as I know nothing has been mentioned there.

I presume all the Celebrities will have to prove they have been hacked and produce the evidence, Sienna Miller settled out of Court. Would the offending
calls be heard in the Court as proof and if so have the McCanns listened to the calls to make sure there is nothing incriminating in the conversation. ? Just
a thought.

Yes l'm sure the panel would have to know what was gleaned from their phones. If there's nothing then there's no reason for the Mcs to be there.

There"s an article in sky......too long to copy and paste but Ulrika Johnsen was one of the Celebrities hacked and it does quote what the conversation was about.....nothing incriminating so these Celebrities must have been asked to identify themselves in the phone conversation. .....I wonder why CM didn"t
jump on the bandwagon, afraid of what his calls might reveal?

Judges reject phone hack legal bid
October 06, 2011
1000Text Size A A A 10 CommentsThe Metropolitan Police does not have to notify phone-hacking victims of a pending High Court challenge against the force
The Metropolitan Police have fought off an attempt to force them to notify hundreds of potential phone-hacking victims of a pending High Court human rights challenge against the force.

Two senior judges, Lord Justice Laws and Mr Justice Simon, refused to direct the Met Commissioner to act. They ruled such a direction was unnecessary and likely to be "complicated and contentious".

The judges heard the Met had alerted 452 individuals that they might be hacking victims.

The request for the direction came from the legal team representing five individuals who have launched the High Court challenge. They asked the court to direct the police to tell all 452 about their case to give them a chance to take part in the proceedings.

The five include former deputy prime minister Lord Prescott, Labour MP Chris Bryant and former Scotland Yard deputy assistant commissioner Brian Paddick.

The others are Ben Jackson, personal assistant to actor Jude Law, and an anonymous member of the public, "HJK".

They are seeking judicial review and declarations that the way the Met handled investigations in 2005-06 into alleged News of the World phone hacking violated their Article 8 rights to private and personal life under the European Convention on Human Rights.

They allege the police "failed to inform them they were victims", failed to respond adequately to their requests for information and failed to carry out an effective investigation at the time.

There are already nearly 40 other names from the world of celebrity, politics, sport and showbusiness listed before the court as "interested parties" who may have had their phones hacked.

They include former footballer Paul Gascoigne, comedian Steve Coogan, TV personality Ulrika Jonsson, Denis MacShane MP and actress Sienna Miller.

When Mitchell said that virtually nobody believed they had been hacked. As the case has developed the Police have informed people that there is evidence they have been hacked. Quite probably that is why the McCanns are now involved. Like everyone else if they have been hacked by journalists (quite likely given the prominence of the case back in 2007 I would have thought) then they have the same right to seek recompense as everyone else.

The Leveson Inquiry isn't about phone hacking although it is one aspect of the relationship between the media, public and politicians which will figure. Participation in the inquiry does not indicate there is any evidence they were or weren't hacked.
