Two more Spanish aid workers have been kidnapped, along with an Italian, from the refugee camps in the Sahara Algerian desert.
After a struggle in the Rabuni camp, the armed kidnappers made off with their three captives in a four wheel drive car direction Mali.
News of the kidnapping was confirmed on Sunday morning by the Spanish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, who said that it happened in the early hours of Sunday.
Those kidnapped have been named as Ainhoa Fernández Rincón, from the Asociación de Amigos del Pueblo Saharaui de Extremadura, and Enric Gonyalons, member of the Spanish organisation Mundobat.
Around 165,000 refugees have been living in the Saharawi camps since 1975 when they had to flee from the Western Sahara after the Moroccan Green March.
Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Trinidad Jiménez, said that ‘we are working with the governments in the zone, and as always, with a great deal of care’. The Ministry is in contact with the families of the two kidnapped Spaniards as well as their non-governmental organisations.
