interested wrote:I didn't know witnesses would be cross-examined and when he signed on I'll bet Gerry didn't know either. I'll bet he thought it was another opportunity to just blah, blah, blah and what with it being so close to Christmas, a chance to get in a plug for the fund. If Kate does show up I'm hoping even if she just utters one nod in agreement with what he says, she will be subject to cross-examination as well. Truth be told, I don't know they have the nerve to complain about the press coverage they have received. The U.K. press has kept the fund in business.

Interested! - Kate will be an asset and a highlight to the inquiry - on top of the diary and the booik - she can tell everyone on live TV what its like to be mentally screwed up! Oprah - you have competition! - the Leveson show!!!

I am going to try and watch it but may, as others have said, get so pee'd off with the "victim syndrome" they plead all the time that I will abort!

Also there is a possibility that we may see evidence of "the strange unexplainable protection" in operation. Perhaps we will see sycophantic sucking up from all involved.

Kelvin McKenzie on Sky Press Review has just given a dollop of "they are so admired" for putting all the compensation money from The Express into searching for Madeleine! Someone ought to send him a link to the accounts!

Maybe they've just found out that it's not just a matter of reeling off the old bla bla, but that they will be cross examined.

Agreed tanszi. It's their 'we are victims too' faces.... except they're really bad actors!

I think Kate's been dragged into attending at the last minute, as they've been advised that a lone Gerry would be less sympathetic and could be subjected to more probing questions as a lone figure.

Leveson inquiry: parents of missing Madeleine McCann to give evidence

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann will join alleged victims of media intrusion in giving evidence to the Leveson Inquiry as they tell how global press attention had a negative effect on their family.

Gerry McCann, Madeleine-McCann father to give evidence on the third day of the inquiry

By Martin Evans
7:00AM GMT 23 Nov 2011

Gerry McCann is expected to give oral evidence while his wife Kate may read a witness statement to Lord Justice Leveson.

Their evidence on the third day of the inquiry is certain to be one of the most moving the press standards inquiry will hear.

Gerry McCann is expected to tell the inquiry press onslaught become unbearable in the wake of the abduction of his daughter Madeleine on a family holiday in Portugal.

He will also say that the mounting suspicion surrounding himself and his wife Kate led to a barrage of highly personal media stories.

The inquiry, sitting in central London, will also hear evidence from Sheryl Gascoigne, the ex-wife of former England footballer Paul Gascoigne, lawyer Mark Lewis, who represents phone hacking victims and journalist Tom Rowland.

The inquiry has already heard that Mrs McCann felt "mentally raped" when her private diary was published in a tabloid newspaper.

Mrs McCann's thoughts and feelings about her daughter's disappearance were printed in extracts from her personal journal, which appeared in the News of the World in 2008.

David Sherborne, the lawyer acting for 51 victims of press intrusion, told Lord Justice Leveson that the publication of the diary was a "blatant intrusion" into the McCann family's private live. They "begged for restraint" but little was shown, Mr Sherborne said.

The News of the World later apologised for printing the diary, which was leaked by a reporter after being in the possession of the Portuguese police.

On Tuesday the inquiry heard that Andy Coulson, the former editor of the News of the World, was behind sting operations aimed at coercing celebrities into disclosing details of their private lives.

Steve Coogan, the comedian, writer and actor, said he had twice been the subject of such tactics when Mr Coulson was a senior executive at the now-defunct Sunday tabloid.

The inquiry into press ethics, which was set up in the wake of the News of the World hacking scandal, was hearing a second day of evidence from alleged victims of press intrusion.

Mr Coogan told Lord Justice Leveson that the first incident, allegedly orchestrated by Mr Coulson, occurred in August 2002.

He said he received a phone call from Rav Singh, a News of the World reporter who was a casual friend. The journalist told him that he was about to be receive a phone call from a young woman, but to be careful what he said because it was a “set-up”.

Mr Coogan told the inquiry: “There was a girl in Andy Coulson’s office who was going to speak to me. The phone call would be recorded, and she would try to entice me into talking about intimate details of my life.

“I was told by Rav Singh that Andy Coulson would be listening to the call and that I would have to obfuscate without betraying the fact that I knew I was being set up so I didn’t land him in it as having tipped me off.”

Mr Coogan said on that occasion the set-up failed but he again became a target in April 2004 during a period when his relationship was breaking down because of an affair.

He explained that he had again received a phone call from Mr Singh, who told him that the newspaper was planning to run a story about the affair.

“I sort of begged him not to put in some of the more lurid details of the story, and he said if I confirmed certain aspects of the story, in return he would guarantee that the more lurid detail would be left out,” said Mr Coogan.

“So I confirmed certain details for him and he gave me his word that the more embarrassing parts of the story, which I knew would upset my then wife’s family, would be omitted.”

But he said that shortly afterwards his manager received a call from Mr Coulson saying that the entire conversation had been recorded and the newspaper was planning to run it. He said Mr Singh’s role had been a ruse to get him to speak.

Mr Coulson took over as editor of the News of the World in 2002 but stepped down in 2007 following the jailing of the paper's royal editor, Clive Goodman, for illegally intercepting voicemails.

He went on to become David Cameron’s director of communications but resigned from the post in January this year, amid increasing pressure over his alleged role in the phone hacking affair.

He is currently on police bail after being arrested in July this year in connection with allegations of corruption and phone hacking.

Mr Coogan admitted that his colourful private life meant he had been the subject of a number of “kiss and tell” stories, but said he had never set out to be a “paragon of virtue” or “model of morality”. “I never sought fame,” he told the inquiry. “Fame is a by-product of what I do.”

He said he did not believe that the coverage about him had been a “malicious personal vendetta” but said where the tabloid press were concerned “it’s like the Mafia, it’s just business”.

Mr Coogan said he had also been the subject of inaccurate articles, including one piece in the Daily Mail that stated that Courtney Love, a former lover, was responsible for the attempted suicide of Owen Wilson, the American actor.

He said when he had attempted to seek corrections or damages the system had been “unwieldy” and expensive adding: “It is sometimes as effective to do nothing. It’s also cheaper.”

Mr Coogan called for a shake-up in press regulation but said he did not want to see quality journalism stifled.

“I wish the press were able to regulate themselves. I would like that,” he said.

“But they have been given opportunities and have failed. There needs to be a privacy law so that genuine public-interest journalism is not besmirched by this tawdry muckraking.”

Referring to Hugh Grant’s appearance earlier in the week, Mr Coogan said: “It’s not the Steve and Hugh show. We’re here, and not with great enthusiasm, because somebody has to represent all those other people who haven’t the stomach to be here.

“Of course there’s a personal element to it, but it’s not just about us; it’s about other people.”

Earlier in the day, Garry Flitcroft, the former Blackburn Rovers footballer, told the inquiry that reporting of his private life may have contributed to his father’s suicide.

In 2002, he lost a legal battle to stop the People publishing stories of extramarital affairs. Mr Flitcroft said his father stopped watching him play because the crowds’ chanting was so bad – worsening his depression.

The former adviser to supermodel Elle Macpherson also gave evidence at the hearing. Mary-Ellen Field, an alleged hacking victim, said she lost her job because she had been suspected of leaking stories.

The Australian said she was accused of speaking to the media because she was an ''alcoholic'' and was persuaded to spend time in a clinic.

Lord Justice Leveson also heard evidence from the parents of murdered schoolgirl Diane Watson, who called for a change in libel laws so newspapers could be sued for defaming dead people.

Margaret and James Watson said the negative reporting about their daughter led to their teenage son committing suicide.

The couple's 16-year-old daughter was stabbed to death by fellow pupil Barbara Glover during the morning break at Whitehill Secondary School in Glasgow in April 1991.

The inquiry will hear from actress Sienna Miller, Harry Potter author JK Rowling and former F1 boss Max Mosley, at a later date.

The first part of the inquiry is looking at the culture, practices and ethics of the press in general. The second part, examining the extent of unlawful activities by journalists.

This will not begin until detectives have completed their investigation into alleged phone hacking and corrupt payments to police and any prosecutions have been concluded.
