The Mail, in its report on the evidence presented by Kate and Gerry McCann, pointed out that the Daily Express and Daily Star were the "worst offenders" while noting that it had "settled out of court." Was that meant to make the Mail seem more virtuous?

The Express's report acknowledged that it had published a front page apology "in which it admitted it was at fault." This was to its credit.

The Daily Mirror devoted a spread to the McCanns, with a large picture, while The Sun not only down-played it - placing it on a left-hand page, 14 - but also failed to record the key part of their statement about trickery by the News of the World and the furious phone call from its editor, Colin Myler.

That was some oversight. Why the reticence? Clearly it wasn't a News International instruction because The Times gave the incident full measure.

Many of the most heinous anecdotes about intrusion and harassment - told by the McCanns, JK Rowling, Max Mosley and Sienna Miller - concerned the paps.

Just found this link from Textus's site which I think is interesting posted by a contributor:

http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/Player.aspx?meetingId=9574&wfs=true

And this one:

https://newsallianceuk.wordpress.com/2011/11/28/army-intelligence-officer-makes-damning-allegations-against-corrupt-top-cops/

Snippet typed up from penultimate paragraph:

"The evidence of Ian Hirst has been the most damning so far and it is to be hoped that between now and Part Two of the Inquiry he does not commit suicide, have a sudden heart attack or a fatal road traffic accident. If he sticks to exposing police corruption alone, he will be alive and well for Part Two...and then the shit will really hit the fan!"

Not sure that he will survive - depends on " you know who".

Paul McCartney 'Shown Phone-Hacking Evidence'

The Beatles Star is the latest in a series of high-profile victims of phone hacking by reporters

4:12pm UK, Saturday December 03, 2011

Sir Paul McCartney has been shown evidence by police that indicates his phone was hacked, according to reports.

The ex-Beatle, who married third wife Nancy Shevell in October, told The Times he knew his phone had been hacked because of stories that had emerged about his personal life.

In an interview with the newspaper he said there was a possibility
many people may have hacked his phone during the time of his divorce
from second wife Heather Mills.

He claims it had a lasting effect. "I tend not to say much on the phone now. If I leave a message, it's benign," he said.

"You edit yourself according to the new circumstances of the new
world. I think it would be quite good to get some sort of laws."

McCartney claims his phone was hacked during his divorce from Heather Mills

Sir Paul is the latest in a series of high-profile victims of hacking.

The Leveson Inquiry
into press standards has been hearing evidence from a range of people,
including the family of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, actress Sienna
Miller, and actor Hugh Grant.

This week singer Charlotte Church described the effect the press had on her life,
while lawyer Mark Lewis said News International had tried to destroy
his life, commissioning surveillance on him and his family.

On Wednesday university lecturer Bethany Usher, who worked at the now
defunct News Of The World, became the 17th person to be arrested under
Scotland Yard's Operation Weeting.

She has been bailed until late March, sources said.

Leveson inquiry: NoW's Neville Thurlbeck to give evidence

Former News of the World chief reporter to appear next week, as will journalist who wrote Kate McCann private diaries story

Daniel Sanderson, who now works as a PR, is expected to be asked by Leveson how the newspaper obtained McCann's diaries which had been seized by Portuguese police and then appeared in the Sunday tabloid.

How the News International title obtained and published the diary without permission was something that "can be dealt with very quickly by someone … because it's pointless in denying it really" Robert Jay, counsel to the inquiry, told Leveson.

(Colin) Myler is also expected to be quizzed about his relationship with the McCanns, who criticised him for allegedly berating them on the phone after they had agreed to do an interview with Hello! magazine.

Some interesting Statements next week then, especially if the journalist says he reproduced the Portugese article which was printed
some weeks before without any comment from the McCanns.

Blogger To Face Inquiry Over Evidence Leaks

Paul Staines says he obtained Alastair Campbell's testimony "by legal means"

1:26pm UK, Monday November 28, 2011

Blogger Guido Fawkes has been called to the public inquiry
on press ethics to explain how he published Alastair Campbell's witness
statement before it was released.

The Leveson Inquiry has been hearing from Chris Jefferies, the landlord wrongly held on suspicion of murdering of Joanna Yates, who said he was vilified by the media.

I am concerned to deprive the particular website of that oxygen.

Lord Justice Leveson

But during the weekend, a copy of Mr Campbell's written submission to
the panel was published online, days before Tony Blair's former
director of communications is due to give evidence.

Paul Staines, who blogs as Guido Fawkes at Order-Order.com, said he obtained the document "by legal means".

But the chair of the inquiry, Lord Justice Leveson, has said he expects Mr Staines to attend this week and explain his actions.

He refused to identify Mr Staines by name, adding: "I am concerned to deprive the particular website of that oxygen."

Lord Justice Leveson said he was worried about the security of the computer system holding confidential witness statements.

He has also asked lawyers representing "core participants" to check
their own arrangements for ensuring documents are kept secret.

"I am obviously concerned about the security of the information that
is available and to maintain the integrity of the inquiry as we move
forward," he said.

"As a result I am intending to inquire to such extent as I can into
the circumstances in which this statement came to be available for
publication."

The chair also passed an order banning any inquiry documents from being leaked.

A statement on the inquiry's website said Mr Campbell's final written
evidence differed slightly to the version that appeared online.

Mr Campbell, the former prime minister's spin doctor for the majority
of his time in Downing Street, wrote on Twitter: "Genuinely shocked
someone has seen fit to leak my statement to Leveson. Less surprised
that Guido Fawkes headline misrepresents it."

The Leveson Inquiry was set up at the height of the phone-hacking
scandal. It is examining the ethics of the media and will hear from a
range of alleged victims of intrusion.

Did anyone see Channel 4 News - apparently the article in The Guardian about hacking Milly Dowlers phone which started the exposure of hacking and NOTW downfall - think his name was Nick Davies who wrote it. Anyway apparently it has been suggested that it wasn't the hackers that deleted the messages it was something to do with the amount of time it was accessed and an automatic deletion at 72 hours.

There is a big furore on and I wonder how this will sit with NI - it brought about the downfall of the NOTW but it may not have been their journalists that caused the deletions!

Yes Angelique i saw that and i was surprised that so one else realised this could have happened. Some time ago i had a phone which automatically deleted messages when theyd been on there for a while, so whilst im not saying that is what happened, it is a possibility. I also have the opposite problem, messages i cannot delete no matter what. theyre innocuous new year greeting which i received but will not go no matter what. Still thats technology that go awry for you. jimo

Ah ... yes I see you have a "sod's law phone" Leveson inquiry: embarrassed tabloids pass the buck in their coverage 25346

Yes I have one of those as well - it does what it likes.

However, I am desperate to see how this pans out what on earth does it mean ? Do the Dowlers have to hand over the compensation money - and what of the costs incurred by the lawyers. All those people who lost their jobs at NOTW - what of Rebecca ? It all seems to be getting a bit messy.

im not sure, i would not have thought so they were compensated for Millys phone being hacked, and that is not in dispute, it might be possible that the activity of hacking generated something that deleted messages, who knows. I think it would be extremely unlikely that they would have to pay compensation back, that would really make headline news and cause furore. As for Rebeccs well i my thoughts on that cant be expressed verbally or in writing, theyll just stay in my head.jimo
