COLD CASE TEAM IN MADELEINE MCCANN HUNT

29th January 2012
By Jonathan Corke

THE British police hunt for Madeleine McCann will cost more than £1.3million in its first year. Scotland Yard’s 37-strong team includes three detective inspectors and five detective sergeants. There are also 19 detective constables on the case under the lead of Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood. And three of the country’s top cold case officers have been brought in. The three, from the Metropolitan Police’s Murder Review Group, are assisting the main Operation Grange team reviewing the Madeleine case files.
The combined salaries of the team total more than £1.3million with thousands also being spent following up leads, including at least four trips abroad. The Met has vowed there will be no limits to the probe, which is being funded through a grant from the Home Office. Already this year the cold case squad has seen Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, brought to justice over the 1993 murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence. Detective Chief Superintendent Hamish Campbell, who led the Jill Dando murder inquiry, is also involved. The Met refused to say if he was one of the three taking part in the Madeleine case but, we can reveal, he is helping oversee the probe. Along with Commander Simon Foy, Mr Redwood and Detective Inspector Tim Dobson, Mr Campbell is part of a “Gold Group” monitoring the review. The group has met eight times since it began last May to discuss progress.
A spokesman for the Met said: “A Major Investigation Team is assigned to Operation Grange. Staff numbers are open to change depending on the needs of the review.”
Three-year-old Madeleine was on holiday with her parents Kate and Gerry, both 43, when she was snatched from their holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007. At Christmas the McCanns said they remain hopeful of a breakthrough, adding: “Our search for Madeleine and the Metropolitan Police review of the case are progressing well.”
Around £2.5million raised through a fund set up by the McCanns, from Rothley, Leics, has been spent on the hunt for the youngster.

Three blind MET, three blind MET...
See how they run, see how they run,
They all ran after the McCan's wife,
That blinded their eyes with a fake smile,
Did you ever see such a sight in your life,

I saw that almostgothic but with the sensationalist reporting of the British press wonder what to make of it. If true, could it refer to so called "sightings"?
Hewitt? Burke? (the guy who supposedly saw a couple turn into a lane with a child and later disappeared ) If it does relate to the McCanns they must be
spitting blood that they were the ones demanding a review. SUNDAY'S DAILY STAR - MADELEINE McCANN HUNT 294124

When he says "our search", I wonder who he actually means.

As far as I can recall, neither Kate Healy not Gerald McCann have expended any shoe leather whatsoever searching for Madeleine.

Some might think that that is because they knew there would have been nothing to be achieved by it.

Mind you, it does surprise me that they didn't at least make a (brief) public show of pounding the streets with the locals and other volunteers as it might have given some credibility to the rest of the story - if only by seeming to corroborate it in the minds of the gullible.

That they didn't was surely either an oversight or a sign of cockiness/arrogance/smugness.

TEIN - you forget Kate had the benefit of a sixth sense! She knew Madeleine had not walked out but that she had been taken. What point would there have been in her physically searching when she knew Madeleine had been taken (and probably was far away by now???) SUNDAY'S DAILY STAR - MADELEINE McCANN HUNT 25346

How can 'our search', which has allegedly been ongoing through various 'top-flight' teams of private detectives for the best part of 5 years at a cost of more than 2.5 million pounds and which has not turned up one credible piece of information, such as a genuine lead, credible witness or anything else worthy of further investigation during that time, be described as 'progressing well'?

"We hired a bunch of dodgy detectives, none of whom had any experience at finding missing children and who therefore, not unexpectedly, turned up nothing, but please keep sending the dosh so that Kate can keep having her highlights done and not have to go to work," wouldn't have brought in any fresh cash!

One hopes that the SY detectives are savvy enough not to be brainwashed by his arrogance. A real nightmare would be them reporting back to him. When one reads the corruption going on in the higher echelons, it destroys all hope of justice ever happening. Perhaps I`ve been reading too many conspiracy stories, but if these two aren`t sussed, it will confirm our society is totally corrupt.

Another Policeman has just been arrested and charged with giving information to Reporters , so it might just be, wishful thinking I know, that SY will want to redeem some of it"s reputation by working WITH the Portugese Police, not FOR the McCanns.

Good post , I totaly agree, I do wonder what anyone in the know at SY or their collegues think when reading stuff from the McCanns spokesperson or even G or K in the papers making out they are been kept in the loop, when we all know darn well that SY would not do this.

At a time when police resources are being stretched to the limit and budgets being cut, I would have thought that a team of this size and amount being allegedly spent is obscene. I know a little girl is missing but we know and so do the SY that she is dead. They are going through the motions and hopefully will come to the conclusion that the McCanns and their cohorts have lied through their veneered teeth.

I agree Keela and the Portugese must be angry that the implication is that they have missed vital clues so the British Police have to come in and inspect
everything.

Leicester Police spent over £1 million, double this for the PJ, now another £3 million being spent by SY. This will prove to be the costliest search for any child, yet the Parents show no appreciation, merely an insolent attitude as if it is their right to make demands on everyone.
