Dubbed the Exeter Connection - a coincidence or could there be more to it?

Murat stayed with his sister in Exeter in the spring, and returned to Portugal two days before Madeleine disappeared on May 3, The Sun reports today.

Two of the Tapas Nine, Russell O'Brien, 36, and Jane Tanner, 37, who says she saw a man carrying the child away, live less than a mile from Murat's sister, Samantha.

Dr O'Brien and partner Jane are neighbours of James Gorrod, 34, and wife Charlotte, 32, who were also in Praia da Luz when Madeleine disappeared. None of them are suspects.

"There are many pieces to the jigsaw, but they all seem to add up to Exeter - we want to know why," a police source told The Sun.

FANCY MEETING YOU HERE! - Textusa

The Exeter, Cheshire Connections and other Coincidences FMYH

Walking up a mountain path on a remote Greek island, I bumped into a Greek guy I knew from my local pub - we both happened to be visiting the same place. “Well, fancy meeting you here!”, we said. No doubt many have had the same experience, but Praia da Luz was full of such strange coincidences. Take Jane Tanner and Russell O’Brien; they bumped into Charlotte and James Gorrod; their neighbours and acquaintances from Exeter. Charlotte does not have appear to have mentioned that she owned an apartment in the resort and that they would be going on holiday there. I wonder if they said FMYH!?

Nicole Cox and Emma Berry; partners, respectively, of Raj Balu and Neil Berry had never met before the holiday, but discovered they had both worked for the same company.
Well, fancy that!

Then there was Philip Norman Allen, an officer from Thames Valley Police - on secondment to the Criminal Investigation Support Dept.- whose family happened to be staying with the Eveleighs at their Salsalito guest house, shortly after Madeleine’s disappearance. Salsalito would later be searched by the PJ. Would you credit it? Philip had some interesting conversations with Robert Murat. He later explained to the PJ that his superiors knew he was staying in PDL. He had met Robert Murat previously, to discuss the purchase of an apartment. However, the holiday apartment he had bought three years ago at the Vila Baia wasn’t yet ready for him to stay in. This property was part of the Oceanico Group’s portfolio, which just happened to be the same group who owned the Estrela da Luz, where strangely enough, the Smith family had an apartment.

The Smiths came from Drogheda, County Louth, where Gerry Fagan, owner of the Ocean Club also came from. I wonder if they ever bumped into each other and said “Don’t I know you from somewhere?” Drogheda - “Well, how’s that for a coincidence!”

I wonder how many other FMYH moments were there in April/May 2007 in PDL...

I wonder if the mccanns and the rest off the tapas lot were there to view property to buy and rent out.

One off the couples had a few properties between them, perhaps that was going to be there sideline and they were looking into buying property in Portugal.

I have often wondered about this, kitti. Were the Tapas Crew looking to buy a property to share? They had someone there who specialised in property law and Robert Murat who had the property business. An apartment at the Ocean Club would have suited their tastes in holidays: sports and creche and a golf course nearby.

Wonder if Yvonne Tunnicliffe lived in or near Exeter befor moving off to spain??....more connnection I wonder???

• The former M&S worker called police after seeing the snatched toddler with 'gypsy' in Spanish supermarket Mercadona

EXCLUSIVE by James Bryce

A BRITISH expat based in Spain is ‘100 per cent sure’ she saw missing Madeleine McCann in a supermarket on the Costa del Sol.

The former M&S sales assistant, 63, is adamant the young girl is the missing Briton after seeing her with a man she describes as looking like ‘a gypsy’.

Yvonne Tunnicliffe, who has lived in Spain for six years, made the sighting while shopping at a Mercadona store in Alhaurin el Grande in 2009.

The grandmother has only now come forward, after reading about increasing suggestion that the toddler might have been snatched by a gypsy gang while on holiday in Portugal in 2007.

“My whole body shook when I saw her, she looked just like her daddy (Gerry),” Tunnicliffe told the Olive Press newspaper.

“I’m certain it was Madeleine, I wouldn’t even say I’m 99 per cent sure, I’m 100 per cent sure.

“She had mousy blonde hair in scruffy plaits, very fair skin and looked about seven or eight, which is how old she would have been now.”

Tunnicliffe contacted police a week after the sighting and was visited by detectives who immediately took her back to the store to view CCTV footage.

But police were informed by the store’s manager that footage was only stored for one week and had subsequently been destroyed.

So convinced was she of the sighting, she was unable to sleep for much of the week and finally drew a number of sketches of both the girl and man for police.

Fighting back tears, she told the Olive Press: “It really upset me and I couldn’t stop thinking about it and why I hadn’t gone to the police straight away.

“It was Christmas and we had friends over. I kept getting sidetracked.”

On the sighting she said: “The girl’s demeanour bothered me. I don’t think she belonged to the man because she didn’t look anything like him.

“He had dark, curly hair down to his neck and was wearing a distinctive bullring-type earring.

“He sounded Portuguese and was certainly not from Alhaurin.”

Tunnicliffe claims the girl – who was wearing a pale blue top and trousers – did not look Spanish.

“It disturbed me for a long time and still upsets me thinking about it now,” an emotional Tunnicliffe added.

When contacted by the Olive Press, a Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed: “It’s an open investigation and any information received will be reviewed and considered by detectives.”

The McCanns’ spokesman was unavailable for comment as we went to press.

Why do people think that all Spanish people are dark haired and never have pale skin? We have Spanish friends who are not at all dark, the father has fair sandy coloured hair, the daughter is very blonde and the son has sandy coloured hair. There are many fair haired and fair skinned Spanish people so to say someone does not look Spanish is in my opinion a worthless statement.

I think what you've got is group connections/friends....

If I living in Yorkshire wanted help I would gather my family/friends here, imo these connections are all part of the pro/friends of the McCanns were ever they live they will be one or two connections in the same town/area, its just that cheshire and Exeter seem to have tomany for my liking.

I was just watching the news last night and this guy was on he said that he was half Italian, he was as blond and pale skinned as you could get, it did come into my mind that he couldn't be because he wasn't dark enough!! The Exeter, Cheshire Connections and other Coincidences 29204

If I were to go to PDL and meet one person from my small town there, I'd think, "What a coincidence," but if I were to meet several who were connected in some way, I'd start to wonder what was going on.

Exactly Anna and I bet there are many more connections yet to be made!

Another coincidence:

kate mccann worked in Howick, New Zealand....the same town as where the Penningtons lived! And kate worked in a neonatal unit there which Charlotte was doing charity fund raising for!

Yes all true Autumn, What's the odds on that coincidence I wonder? I also wonder if there are further connections between the McCann's and Charlotte Pennington (AKA Wighton) that we don't know of. It's always puzzled me why her nationality on her witness statements is given as 'Irish Citizen'

Yes indeed, and while talking about coincidences
you leave your small city and go on holiday and
your property owner has the same surname as you!
Wow! I say, Wow! Coincidence?
The landlady was Ruth McCann! and according to
the McCanns, No connection.
Furthermore, I believe that one of the nannies
was also called Mccann!

It is possible that the McCanns apparently everywhere is indeed a coincidence as it is a very common name in Liverpool and parts of Scotland and Ireland.

Ruth is the widow of Michael McCann who died in 2006 and I think he came from somewhere in the west country originally - but not Exeter!

I'm not so sure it is that common a surname. Both of my Irish/Scots family surnames are more common than the McCann name in all three areas you mention, I was surprised by this. You're right, Michael Mccann was apparently born in Plymouth but he died in Liverpool.

I'm no good with stats and stuff but maybe someone here can tell if Martin Brunt was talking BS or if he was anywhere near with these stated odds?

"The chance of the McCanns renting a holiday home from someone of the same name is 7,500-to-one."

Mari Olli Pollard (45) - retired Social Worker and Raymond Pollard allege they have seen Madeleine in Morocco. They were on holiday there. They claimed they only knew about the abduction upon their return to Spain and immediately realised the significance of what they had seen. They do not tell Police they are from Leicester and have moved only recently to Spain.

2. Raymond Pollard and Mari Olli lived in Groby, Leicestershire - about 7 minutes drive from the McCanns in Rothley. They now live near Malaga in Spain.

3. Raymond Pollard seems to have run as Lib Dem candidate for Leicester County Council (2004/05). His brother is currently a Lib Dem MP as is similarly working for Leicester Council.

4. A director of the Find Madeleine Fund is said to be be involved on Leicester Council.

5. The Police allege that Raymond Pollard or Mari Olli Pollard DID NOT tell them that Raymond Pollard already knew Gerry's brother.

6. The Pollards did not tell the Poilce that they were originally from Groby, In Leicester so near to the McCanns in Rothley (The Hospital Gerry works at is called Glenfield Hospital and it is on Groby Road - very close to the Groby area).

Its good that so much has been saved and many thanks to Hideho for taking the time and trouble for safe-guarding much info which has now gone from the internet.
