Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba has been discharged from the London Chest Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest last month, the club and hospital have confirmed in a joint statement.

Muamba had been recovering in the East London hospital following his collapse during the first half of Bolton's FA Cup quarter-final tie at Tottenham on March 17th.

The 24-year-old's heart stopped for 78 minutes as medics battled to keep him alive but he has made rapid progress since the incident.

A spokesman for Barts Health NHS Trust said on Bolton's official website: "Barts Health can confirm that Fabrice Muamba has now been discharged following several weeks of treatment.

"All our staff wish him the very best in his ongoing recovery."

Muamba added: "I am naturally very pleased to be discharged from hospital and would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to every single member of staff at The London Chest Hospital who have played a part in my care.

"Their dedication, professionalism and expertise is simply amazing and I will forever be in their debt. I also wish to say thank you to all the many well-wishers who have sent thousands of messages of support.

"Now I am out of hospital, I am looking forward to continuing my recovery and spending precious time with my family."

Recovery

Muamba's discharge is the next step in what has so far been a remarkable recovery for the former England Under-21 international.

The midfielder collapsed in the 41st minute of the match, which was subsequently abandoned, and medical staff desperately worked to save the player's life on the pitch before he was rushed to hospital.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle said: "It is absolutely fantastic news that Fabrice has been discharged from hospital and everyone at the club is delighted.

"We would also like to add our thanks to the staff at The London Chest Hospital for their care and treatment of Fabrice, which has been outstanding.

"It is important that Fabrice and his family are now given time and space to be together, and we would ask the media to continue to respect their privacy."

Yes, isn't it wjk and despite our grumbles about the wages Footballers get, it was good to see the genuine concern of all division players . The football
Season is nearly at an end now so he has plenty of time to recover .

That is incredibly good news.He was 'dead' for 78 minutes.Amazing luck he had that there was a cardioligist in the crowd who's skills kept him alive for all that time.It will be bordering on a miracle if he plays top class football again but hope he does.

The Cardiologist is a Tottenham Fan and his aid initially on the pitch was crucial and the other miracle was that the Hospital he was taken to was near the Football Club and a Centre of Excellence in Cardiology. How anyone can die for 78 minutes and recover completely without any after affects is
unbelievable.

It was heartwarming to see the support Muamba received from all the Fans at the Football Grounds , but it will be a long time, if ever, he is able to play football again.

---------------------------------------------

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba says his brush with death has left him with nothing to fear as he continues his remarkable recovery from a cardiac arrest.

The 24-year-old needed 78 minutes of resuscitation after collapsing on the pitch while playing for Wanderers against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in March.

"I died, literally. I am alive," he told The Times. "There is nothing now to be in fear of."

After-effects

The former England Under-21 international is continuing his recovery in defiance of predictions he was likely to suffer significant brain damage.

He continues to suffer from the after-effects of his ordeal, however.

"I've still got a long way to go with my memory and it frustrates me," he said.

"Obviously my brain is not as it used to be because there are things missing.

"My memory is literally all over the place.

"I will talk to [fiancee] Shauna, ask her about someone. Five minutes later I'll ask the same question."

Muamba has been saddened by the deaths of two sportsmen since his own incident - Livorno player Piermario Morosini, who collapsed on the pitch, and Norwegian swimmer Alexander Dale Oen.

Muamba said: "Three times in sports in the last few months? Unbelievable. There has to be a way of stopping this.

"Morosini in Italy, that shocked me big time. I watched it on YouTube. It was mind-blowing. I said to myself, 'This was me not so long ago'."

Intervention

Muamba's fiancee Shauna revealed the intervention of Jonathan Tobin, Bolton's club doctor, twice stopped the medics from giving up during the period of resuscitation.

She said: "It was only the personal relationship between Dr Tobin and Fabrice that kept them going. Dr Tobin told me that."

She added: "They thought about stopping twice. Dr Tobin said, 'No, let's try again'. And they kept on trying until they saved his life."
