Madeleine McCann aged nine: Police release image of what she would look like now as detectives reveal they think she's ALIVE

New image shows Maddie as she might look on the eve of her ninth birthday

DCI in charge of case says: 'We genuinely believe there is a possibility that she is alive'

28 detectives are sifting through 40,000 pieces of evidence in a bid to 'bring closure' to the mystery

Detectives leading the hunt for Madeleine McCann have said they 'genuinely believe there is a possibility that she is alive'.

As the fifth anniversary of the girl's disappearance from a Portugal hotel room approaches, 28 officers assigned to the case are combing through 40,000 pieces of evidence.
DCI Andy Redwood said they have 195 leads to follow up - and that Scotland Yard had the 'best opportunity' to solve the mystery because it was the first time information from all sources had been considered.
The team is drawing together information from Portuguese law enforcement bodies, British police and private investigations commissioned by the McCanns.

The message of hope for Kate and Gerry McCann comes as Scotland Yard released this image of how Maddie might look like today,

The new image was created in 'close collaboration with the family' ahead of the fifth anniversary of her disappearance on May 3. Her ninth birthday follows just over a week later.

Madeleine went missing from her family’s holiday flat in Praia da Luz in Portugal on May 3, 2007, as her parents Kate and Gerry McCann dined with friends nearby.

DCI Redwood said his team of 28 detectives and seven civilian staff was sifting through around 40,000 pieces of information and was 'seeking to bring closure to the case'.The information gathered totals about 100,000 pages.

Mr Redwood said: 'From the outset we have approached this review with a completely open mind, placing Madeleine McCann at the heart of everything we do.'We are working on the basis of two possibilities here - one is that Madeleine is still alive, and the second that she is, sadly, dead. 'Based on the former we are releasing the age progression image today with a specific appeal.'
The official investigation was shelved in July 2008 but Scotland Yard’s review of the case, Operation Grange, was launched last year when David Cameron responded to a plea from Madeleine’s parents. DCI Redwood said his team was analysing ‘every single piece of paper’ generated in the investigation. He added: 'Anything is possible and clearly, within that material, the answer could lie.'
Asked why he believed the operation was unique, DCI Redwood told the BBC’s Panorama: ‘Because at no time before have those three elements [Portuguese law enforcement bodies, British police and private investigations] been drawn together in one place.’
While Portuguese police remain the lead agency in the case, and it would be up to them to decide whether to reopen it, he said his team in London aimed to solve the mystery.
Five years of uncertainty: Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, still hope for their daughter's rescue
The review 'will give us the best opportunity... to bring them the best-quality information to assist them in making that decision'.
Operation Grange has so far cost the taxpayer £2million. So far the detectives have only analysed a quarter of the material since the review started almost a year ago.
It could now go on for several years after detectives pledged to pursue every line of inquiry rigorously.
The investigative review was launched last year after a meeting between former Met commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson and the Home Office.

Detectives in Portugal are also understood to want the case reopened but must gain judicial approval via the courts.
Mr Redwood added: 'So far, I have conducted seven visits to Portugal.
'Two of those visits have been at senior level, one of those visits was a visit to the actual resort itself and four of the other visits were directly face to face with the review team.'

Police refused to say what evidence they had uncovered to suggest Madeleine was alive.
And, even if five years have passed, Mr Redwood urged any new witnesses to come forward.
He said: 'If you know where Madeleine McCann is now or you have new direct information or evidence about what has happened to her then please contact us.'
Anyone at the resort of Praia da Luz between April 28 and May 3 2007 'particularly in the vicinity of the Ocean Club' is asked to come forward if they have not already spoken to police.
Potential witnesses are urged to call 0800 096 1011 within the UK or +44 207 1580 126 from outside.

Well having paid £3.5 million for it, I think we have a right to see it. IF it exists.

From some poor deluded sod:

"Scotland Yard have just announced that they have found 189 leads from the existing Portuguese Police files which have not been followed up...this is unforgivable. I will not be taking my family to Portugal until this poor girl is found."

Bet the Portuguese will be incredibly upset by this. Daily Mail article - comments being taken 23324
