THE PEOPLE

29 APRIL 2012

NEW CLUE MADNESS

by CAROLE MALONE

I HOPE, with all my heart, that Madeleine McCann is alive
And I can see that last weeks claims that she might be by officers reviewing the evidence must be a huge comfort to Kate and Gerry McCann who have never give uo hope of finding her.

However, despite being told there really IS fresh hope I’m still at a loss to understand why the cops heading up review body, Operation Grange believe that to be the case.

I don’t expect them to give us specific details of what they’ve found. But every time he’s asked why he thinks Madeleine might still be alive, the man in charge, DCI Andy Redwood, dodges the question and comes out with stuff like: “We are currently developing material we believe represents genuinely new information.”

That isn’t just vague, it means absolutely nothing. As does his revelation that cops are looking at 195 new “investigative opportunities” .

If police do have 195 leads that surely means they’re a million miles away from knowing where Maddie is or even if she’s alive. In fact, that number of leads suggests there’s as much muddle and confusion around this case as there ever was and it could take years and many more millions of pounds to work through them.

And still, the result might be that Madeleine is never found.

There are 25 coppers working on Operation Grange, as many as there are chasing paedophiles in London and they’ve been reviewing evidence for 12 months and have travelled to Portugal seven times. But still, there’s nothing concrete. All we have is a photo-fit of how Madeleine might look now and quotes like: “The timeline of events suggests she was snatched by a criminal gang or a stranger.”

As opposed to what? Aliens?

I’m sorry but after 12 months, £2million and 28 officers working flat out we surely should know more than that?

We’re told there is “significant information” Madeleine is still alive and if that really is true the police must at least THINK they have something.

Because you can’t say you believe someone is alive without good reason or evidence to back it up. And if you have neither - you’re just guessing.

I just hope the officers on Operation Grange haven’t sanctioned this latest raft of “Madeleine” stories in order to justify their existence and the vast amount of taxpayers’ money that’s been spent. Or because, not having come up with any answers, they know questions will inevitably be asked.

Not least by Portugal’s Attorney General Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro who last week refused to re open the case: “unless there are credible new facts and not just hypotheses or speculation”. Yes five years ago Portuguese police spectacularly cocked up the hunt for Madeleine in the vital hours after her disappearance.

But even DCI Redwood admits there is now a “committed and dedicated” review team in Portugal working with them.

Yes I can see this review offers great solace to Kate and Gerry McCann, but I’m wondering how all the other parents of abducted children must feel knowing that their missing children aren’t important enough to warrant intervention from the PM or a 28-strong team of crack detectives working around the clock five years after their child’s disappearance. How devastated, how disappointed must they feel.

And just how long will this review go on? Of course Kate and Gerry want it to be indefinitely. But that’s not realistic nor is it fair to all those other parents of abducted children whose lives are every bit as tortured as the McCanns, yet who have no one looking for their lost babies.

There’s not a living soul who wouldn’t want to see Madeleine brought home safely but surely, there must come a time when we have to be realistic about the chances of finding her."

At least a journalist who uses her brain and clearly expresses what normal people think.

By the way, wednesday the 2/5,the journalist Jacques Pradel ( who made 2/3 years ago a very good broadcast in "Thé ou café" about the case) will speak about Maddy Mccann in his broadcast :

http://www.rtl.fr/emission/l-heure-du-crime/billet/au-sommaire-de-l-heure-du-crime-la-semaine-du-30-avril-7746894386

mercredi 2 mai RTL 14h . 15 h. Maddie, 5 ans déjà

I will try to listen and make a summary

Ms Malone, I thought was no fool and I actually enjoyed reading until........

Yes five years ago Portuguese police spectacularly cocked up the hunt for Madeleine in the vital hours after her disappearance.

She has spoilt the whole acticle by informing us that SY are stating they have leads without following them through, then bang she goes and does just what she is moaning about by telling us that the Portguese Police cocked up.

Well Ms Malone how do you know this????, shame, such a good positive article that she herself ruined, I suppose we have to that the papers are slowly questioning the neglecting doctors in some sort of fashion now.

Dr Amaral himself stated on Panorama that he'd made mistakes at the start of the investigation... so not surprising she said that.

Do people seriously think that Portuguese and British cops have kept the file on Maddie McCann open for more than a year in order to embarrass, humilliate and torture her perents Kate and Gerry?

Hasn't it occurred to anyone (especially the McCanns)that this file has been left open and questions have continued to be asked because coppers (as inept as some of them have been) really want to find Maddie - preferably alive?

Why should Kate and Gerry get an apology now the case files look like it's about to be closed? It has always been in their best interests to have it kept open so maddie abductors (or killers) can be found. And by closing the file the police aren't saying anyone is guilty or innocent. They are simply saying they can't find or prove who took her.

Yes the police have made stupid mistakes. But then so did Kate and Gerry by leaving their children alone in an unlocked apartment for five nights in a row while they went out eating and drinking with friends. And if the McCanns, as rumors suggest, are not going to be charged with neglect they ought to be grateful.

Because while those charges might not be brought very often in Britain they are routinely brought in other european countries, where society and the legal system seem to value kid safety more than we do. (if you think britain cares about its children ask yourselves why convicted paedophiles are freed by courts to wander among our kids, when even they tell us thay can't be cured).

The tragedy here isn't Kate and Gerry's hurt feelings over the investigation, it's that Maddie's still missing - and closing the file means her abductors have got away scot-free.

GONCALO Amaral, the Portuguese detective whose bungling contributed much to messing up the hunt for Madeleine McCann, has written a book about her disappearance.

Suggestion.

Shouldn't he be doing a diet book instead?

Sunday Mirror

Haunted every day by Maddy

May 20, 2007
by CAROLE MALONE

GOD forgive me for thinking this, but there have been times this week when I've been angered by Kate and Gerry McCann.

I suspect like thousands of others I've been plagued by cruel, unspeakable thoughts. Thoughts like: What on earth possessed them to leave their three kids alone in an unlocked villa? Why didn't these two well-paid doctors fork out for one of the holiday complex's professional babysitters? And, if they had to go out to dinner, why weren't they carrying one of those baby monitors which would have alerted them to any danger?

And I'm furious because, in the back of my mind, I know if the McCanns had been unemployed and on benefits - not highlypaid middle- class doctors - social services would have been all over them like a rash trying to take away the two kids they have left. I've been watching the two of them jogging on the beach and thinking: "What the hell are they doing."

And I've been thinking all this because, like everyone else, I wake up every day haunted by Madeleine McCann's beautiful little face - her big brown eyes, those Bambi eyelashes and her cute smile. I look at her and my heart aches because I can't bear to think of that gorgeous little girl being defiled. I can't bear to think of her fear - and I don't want to believe that what I'm terrified may happen, already has.

And if I feel all that, God only knows what Kate and Gerry McCann must be feeling. God knows about the visions that must haunt their conscious - and unconscious - thoughts. Because it's easy for me to sit here and say: "They shouldn't have done this or that." But the fact is that, whatever the circumstances of Madeleine's disappearance, the McCanns will blame themselves because it's what parents do - and there's no point in me adding to their pain.

The truth is that, as angry as I am at the way this kidnap was allowed to happen, I look at Kate and Gerry and I see that this is a couple who in the worst, and most horrific of circumstances, are trying to behave normally. Because in spite of Madeleine's kidnap they still have two other kids who don't yet know Madeleine's gone, two kids who may have to be told at some point that she's never coming back. And I wonder where they get the strength to do that. Because every hellish day the two of them still have to haul their leaden limbs and their broken hearts out of a bed they can't sleep in and smile at the two babies who are still with them.

They still have to cuddle and play with those little mites who, for now at least, are still living in blissful ignorance of their sister's disappearance.

Imagine the strength it must take to feign that kind of grotesque "normality", the kind that gets them through each day, the kind that forces them to jog along a beach because they know doing "normal" stuff is the only way to keep the media interest in their little girl alive. Imagine the strength it takes to stand in front of the world's TV cameras and talk about the child they may never again hold in their arms. Imagine what it takes to convince themselves - and us - that Madeleine will soon be home and they can go back to their old lives where this horror will become a distant nightmare. But no matter now much they pretend, no matter how many times they go jogging in order to feel "normal" the fact is normality ended for the McCanns the day Madeleine disappeared. And no, maybe they shouldn't have left her alone, but blame and recriminations aren't going to bring Madeleine back.

And that's all that's important now. The terror we're all living with, the thought we dare not think aloud is that she's never coming back. And if that's the case, life for the McCanns, as they know it, is over.

Nothing and no one will ever be of any comfort. Not their two remaining children, not the people who love them, not even their god will be able to help them come to terms with the loss of a little girl the world has fallen in love with.

And while we all pray for Madeleine, let's remember that nowhere in this world is safe for our kids - no country, no holiday home, no posh house, no hotel.

Class, money, age, influence - none of it protects them. All that matters is keeping them close - close enough to feel, to hear, to see and to touch. Nothing less will keep them from the grips of those monsters determined to destroy them.
