Missing children hotline hailed
Share1

Kate McCann is attending a Downing Street reception to celebrate the 116000 missing children hotline
Britain's introduction of a new Europe-wide phone number to help find missing children is to be celebrated at a Downing Street reception.

The 116000 hotline is operated by specialist support groups in 16 EU countries, including France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Holland and Poland.

An official website to help find the UK's missing and abducted children - www.missingkids.co.uk - has also been relaunched ahead of International Missing Children's Day on Friday.

Home Secretary Theresa May will host the reception in Number 10 for campaign groups, celebrity supporters and families of missing children.

Guests will include actress and singer Holly Valance and her property developer fiance Nick Candy, former EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite, broadcaster Sue Lawley and Kate McCann, whose daughter Madeleine disappeared in Portugal in 2007.

In Britain the charity Missing People will operate the 116000 phone line, which is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day.

The new redesigned website, providing the latest appeals to help find missing youngsters, is being run by specialist UK police agency the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre (Ceop). It allows the public to download posters and in some cases includes age-progression images showing how children may have changed as they grow older.

The site also offers information for children who are missing or thinking about running away and advice on what families can do if a child in their care disappears.

Missing People chief executive Martin Houghton-Brown said: "Disappearances such as Madeleine McCann's tragically demonstrated the need for co-ordination across the world when a child goes missing. 116000 is introduced so that people can call when someone disappears regardless of which EU country they are in."

Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone added: "Missing children and their families are vulnerable, and International Missing Children's Day reminds us of the role we all have to play in protecting and supporting them. Government has set a clear direction for this with our missing children and adults strategy, calling on local and national organisations to prevent, protect and provide support for missing children and their families."

I FEEL SORRY FOR PEOPLE LIKE KERRY NEEDHAM........WILL SHE BE THERE BY THE WAY OR IS THIS JUST A CELEBRITY PARTY?

Could we have a missing person because the parents went on the piss day?

Must of been a let down to have Theresa May hosting this occasion...the queens jubilee is around the corner, does her majesty know she is harming the search for Madeleine...i mean...how could she!!...so soon after the 5th anniversary & the release of the epilogue...tut tut
I suspect the Mccanns do have a conscience & this is their way of doing right by Madeleine...helps them sleep better

I'm surprised that there are any sick buckets left after all the McCann stories over the last five years.

I really do find it hard not to kick every inanimate object in sight when the McCanns gatecrash a genuine charity event.

The 116 numbers were part of the French "Alerte Enlèvement," system introduced in 2006 by the then Justice Minister, Rachida Dati. For an alert to be issued, 4 criteria have to be met.

1) It must be a confirmed abduction and not just a disappearance, however worrying.

2) The victim's life or physical safety must be at risk.

3) The Public Prosecutor must be in possession of sufficient information which, if broadcast, would help to locate the child or the suspect.

4) The victim must be a minor.

How many of those criteria would be met in the case of Madeleine's disappearance?

I've just been looking at the front pages of the daily newspapers, on the Sky News website. There is an article on the front page of the Daily Mirror, which says that Ben Needham, could be buried at a Greek Building site. According to the article, the police want to begin digging. I can only imagine what Ben's mum is going through at this time.

Hot Lips Healy Hails Hotline...

Sometimes I think I'm living on another planet.

Some things are just wrong. Wrong.

Kate McCann hails new hotline

Kate McCann is among guests at a Downing Street reception to celebrate the introduction of a new Europe-wide hotline to help find missing children.

This comment completely sums it up for me...

"It's unbelievable that a woman can be invited to number 10 for leaving her kids alone while she went on the piss, oh yes and losing one into the bargain. It's unreal!!"

Is Mrs McCann simply being used for her repute and tabloid pulling power? To be honest I'd rather look and listen to someone else and find it appalling that the likes of this woman should have the honour of being at Downing Street when there really are more deserving envoys.

The McCanns are representatives of the charity, Missing Persons, a charity which they use when it suits them. Being a representative does tend to make one sound important and involved... yet they are so embroiled in other things, they don't care to ensure that their own missing child's poster is updated. It hasn't been for 5 years. Missing Madeleine is still four...

Moral entrepreneur Kate #McCann’s trip to Downing Street

24May

MADELEINE McCann’s mother Kate last night hailed the launch of two new initiatives to help find missing children.

She was among guests at a Downing Street reception to mark the introduction of a new Europe-wide phone hotline and the relaunch of an official website with information about Britain’s missing and abducted children.

Mrs McCann, 44, whose daughter disappeared in Portugal in 2007 aged three, said the missing children hotline phone number – 116000 – was a “lifeline” for families like hers.

She said it was a “really positive day” and spoke of a shift in attitudes among politicians towards the problem. “In the last few years there’s been greater awareness and certainly there’s been a greater political will,” she said.

“We just need to keep spreading the message. It is a big problem and we do need the Government’s backing.”

The 116000 missing children hotline, which is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day, is operated by specialist support groups in 16 European countries, including Britain, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Holland and Poland.

Meanwhile, the UK’s official website to help find missing and abducted children – missingkids.co.uk – has also been redesigned ahead of International Missing Children’s Day on Friday.

Home Secretary Theresa May hosted the reception in Number 10 for campaign groups, celebrity supporters and families of missing children.

Also there was Nicki Durbin, whose 19-year-old son Luke went missing after a night out with friends in Ipswich, Suffolk, in May 2006.

She said: “There’s been a huge change in the last year, and more people are aware about all of our missing ones.”

Two London cabs sporting advertisements for the newly-relaunched website were parked outside the front door of Number 10.

Another 300 black cabs will carry appeals for missing children inside for passengers to read, thanks to an idea by former taxi driver Colin Outhwaite, father of ex-EastEnders star Tamzin.

Heavily pregnant Tamzin said: “It’s an amazing idea. I couldn’t believe no-one had ever thought of it before.”

The charity Missing People will operate the 116000 phone line in Britain, and specialist UK police agency the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre will run the website.

Martin Houghton-Brown, chief executive of Missing People, said: “Disappearances such as Madeleine McCann’s tragically demonstrated the need for co-ordination across the world when a child goes missing.”

The description for Madeleine on the new missing website states she is 2ft 11inches and 9 yeas old. McCanns would do well to use some of those so called experts and advisors they pay lots of money to, to read these things on their behalf, to ensure they are correct. She has surely grown in five years. If you are looking for your child please make sure the information given to the public to look for her is at least factually correct.

The organisors of this launch should remember that a lot of people doubt the McCanns story. I for one start to doubt the credibility of anyone or anything that uses Kate Healy or Gerry McCann as a good marketing ploy. What a pity they chose this route.

Did the Fund make any donation to the new initiative, now that they have SY on their own case and as Gerry said the pressure is off financially.

Why was Mitchell there and where was Gerry ? Maybe she left him home alone, locked into Rothley Towers.

It is this sort of rubbish that makes me wonder why I bother.

Notice the 'dig' at the needhams.

Christine and Eddie recall eating lunch inside with Michaelis to escape the searing heat.

The grandparents say that at 2.30pm Christine realised Ben had gone quiet while playing outdoors in temperatures of more than 30C, and searched for him on the surrounding land.

At least three hours passed before the frantic grandparents contacted police to report Ben missing and provide a picture of the youngster.

Hello Mossman!
Why can't the existing 'Childline' be used? That has been going for years - I don't know whether it has a good record - but this Euro effort is doomed to failure.
Putting posters inside taxis doesn't strike me as a fantastic idea. The public transport system would get far more exposure.
Pretty soon people will be claiming they've 'lost' children when they know perfectly well they've run away because their home life isn't bearable. A new hobby for the terminally bored.

At least, console yourself Mossman, it wasn't hosted by DC but by Theresa May - who was the one NOT wishing to indulge the McCanns. These receptions are always prettied up for the papers, they're boring, people stand around, the press have already written their piece the day before and it all feels and looks like a damb squib.

If there were crowds of people outside to applaud the sainted McCann - then I'd worry. Incidentally, I'm female so can be accused of being bitchy, but I'm also a figurative artist. KM wasn't beautiful to start off with imo, but I find her an unpleasant looking, masculine woman. That jawline - the little very straight nose which looks as if it's had a bit of help, doesn't fit the rest of the face. Then the eyes - nothing behind them. Beauty is both inside and outside, e.g. Nigella Lawson is beautiful because she obviously enjoys life and her looks reflect that.

Mossman, don't forget that they thought they'd have top jobs as ambassadors for lost children, be adored the world over for their wonderful work and be rubbing shoulders with the A-list. Probably promoting the microchip with the myth that something like Maddie would never happen again. There was a lot of money and status in them thar plans. All gone Missing children day 25346

Hi Panda, thanks. Still wonder why she bothered to bring Mitchell with her though.

Gerry's career has surely suffered, regardless of what he likes to think. Has he gone more towards the research and academic side of things I wonder, rather than the day to day medical consultations. I would go to a vet before have a consultation with him and I do not think I'm alone in that.

The amount of money being spent is unbelievable. Of course I agree that Madeleine needs to be found and money should not be an obstacle to finding each and every child that is missing. But to see their fund being wasted, tax payers money thrown at SY to cater for just the McCanns and then parents with sick children begging for treatment through the NHS. What a difference that money would make to so many.

Terribly terribly sad.

The effort in Europe has been going for a few years and was tested out a few times successfully before being rolled out across Europe. The UK is one of the last countries to adopt the system.

http://frommybigdesk.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/roll-out-mccanns-somebody-mentioned.html

April 4th 2010

In December 2006, an extraordinary meeting of the member states approved an initiative of the European Commission to reserve certain numbers (Starting with 116 ) for a Europe-wide alert system for missing children. This was the system which had been in operation in France since 2006 and had proved to be effective in several cases. (August 2007: abducted 5 year-old French child recovered within hours.)

Back to SkyNews:

"The network, comparable to the amber alert system in the United States, will be compatible with other European countries for the first time."

Well, hallelujah! By January 2009, 10 out of the 17 member states of the EU had adopted the European Alert system, the UK as we know, not having been amongst them, in spite of the fact of having the greatest number of missing children. (SOS Maddie blog)

But sky News tells us that the McCanns have been campaigning for such a system since their daughter disappeared! Well, no they haven't! They took up being poster children for McMillan-Scott's campaign in June 2008, when other member states had been operating an alternative system since 2006!

Since 2006, the French system, known as "Alerte Enlèvement," which is the system now introduced across most of the EU territory and finally in the UK, has recovered many missing children through rapid response to reported cases of abduction. The success of the system, according to Rachida Dati, former French Justice Minister, is due to there being very strict criteria for launching an alert. Four criteria must be met.

"Quatre critères doivent toutefois être réunis pour que le plan soit déclenché : il doit s'agir d'un enlèvement avéré, et non d'une simple disparition, même inquiétante ; la vie ou l'intégrité physique de la victime doit être en danger ; le procureur de la République est en possession éléments d'informations dont la diffusion permettrait de localiser l'enfant ou le suspect ; et la victime doit être mineure." (Duarte Levy)

So, why is the press wheeling out the McCanns today in relation to this alert system, when they had nothing to do with its inception or its introduction? This is the system that they unsuccessfully tried to replace with McMillan-Scott's version of the American Amber Alert.

And would an alert have helped to find Madeleine in May 2007, given the above criteria?

1) Not met. There was no evidence of an abduction.

2) Maybe. If Maddie was still alive after 10pm on May 3rd, it is highly likely that she would be in physical danger.

3) Not met. The information available would not have helped locate Maddie or the alleged abductor. Small child, last seen in her bed, not there now, man seen carrying a bundle that could have been a child. Description: an egg with hair!

4) Met. One out of four ain't bad? No, it ain't good!

I meant principally the cooperation between the countries contracted. The French directives seem eminently sensible - the McCann disappearance cannot be shoehorned into this at all. But the Mirror has Ben Needham on the front page! At last!

Didn't G and K give a powerpoint presentation to MEPs in Brussels about this?- trying to hijack an existing agreement already signed by various countries as if they had dreamt it up themselves?

Thanks Tigger, as always, very sensible points, to bring me back down to earth Missing children day 944533

Indeed, why was Childline not used ? Even for the children themselves, it is a familiar point of help for them.

I think Gerry has thrown in the towel. I got that impression from the recent spate of publicity, I think he has had enough and wants to go in a different direction, god only knows what that direction might be.
