Families of Robert Napper's victims have spoken of their anguish after the convicted sex killer admitted killing Rachel Nickell.

Andre Hanscombe, the partner of murdered Rachel Nickell, described the police's "catalogue of errors with extremely tragic consequences" that cost other victims their lives."

"Now we have to accept the possibility that what happened to Rachel could have been avoided as well," he told the Daily Mail.

Speaking after Napper admitted a frenzied knife attack on Miss Nickell in front of her young son, Alex, on Wimbledon Common 16 years ago, he told how he and Alex had kept her memory alive.

"She's always been alive for us, she's always been a presence, she's never been a taboo subject," he said.

Another relative of Napper's victims also spoke of his pain after the killer pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to Miss Nickell's manslaughter on the ground of diminished responsibility.

Jack Morrison said Samantha Bisset, 27, and her four-year-old daughter Jazmine could still be alive today if police had investigated Napper at an earlier stage.

"The police should have investigated Napper at the time," he told the Daily Record.

In November 1993 - a year after Miss Nickell's death - Napper, 42, killed Miss Bisset and her daughter after climbing into their basement flat near his home in Plumstead, south-east London.

Mr Morrison said Samantha's mother Maggie, 53, of Crawton, near Aberdeen, had died before she could see Napper jailed.

"She died of a broken heart and believed until the day she died that Napper had killed Rachel too," he said.

Napper was suspected of spying on Miss Bisset with her boyfriend before climbing into the basement flat.

He assaulted Miss Bisset and stabbed her eight times in the neck before sexually assaulting and suffocating Jazmine in her bed.

Napper then dragged Miss Bisset's body into the living room, where he mutilated her.

He admitted their manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at the Old Bailey in October 1995.

Napper has now been ordered to be detained in Broadmoor mental hospital indefinitely.
