The Duke of Edinburgh has been taken to hospital as a "precautionary measure", Buckingham Palace has said.

Prince Philip was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary this afternoon, the palace said.

The nature of his illness was not disclosed.

It comes after he spent five nights in hospital with a bladder infection following the Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the River Thames.

He was discharged from London's King Edward VII just in time for his 91st birthday in June, but his treatment meant the Queen spent some of her jubilee celebrations without him by her side.

In the past year he has also been treated for a blocked coronary artery following chest pains.

More follows...

Well, hats off to him , he has lasted well. I think if he did die now the queen would be devastated. He might have been Jack the Lad when he was younger but he has always been a good consort.

Yes, it suggests that in the article I posted....but would the Hospital discharge him if they did not think he was fit enough? I know it was the Jubilee , but the Queen would have wanted him to be cured I'm sure.

He probably was cured from that infection, but it has come back again. It may be his 'weak point' I think it would have shown up before now, if it was the same infection because it hadn't been cleared the first time? I don't know, I'm only guessing?

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Prince Philip spent five nights in a hospital with a bladder infection
  • The 91-year-old has been hospitalized three times in the past eight months
  • Queen Elizabeth II's husband is the longest-serving royal consort

London (CNN) -- Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip was released from a hospital in Scotland on Monday after being treated for a bladder infection.

Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was admitted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in Scotland on Wednesday.

The 91-year-old, who first suffered the problem in June, fell ill again as he was staying at the royal residence in Balmoral, Scotland, where the queen traditionally spends part of the summer.

Buckingham Palace said Wednesday he had been taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure and was likely to be kept in for several days.

Duke of Edinburgh taken to Hospital again 120529041221-queen-elizabeth-philip-giant-image-story-bodyInside an enduring royal romance
It is the third time Philip has been hospitalized in the past eight months.

Before the bladder infection, which he initially contracted during events marking the queen's diamond jubilee, he spent four nights in a hospital over the Christmas holiday last year for treatment of a blocked coronary artery.

However, he appeared in good health last week as he fulfilled several engagements on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England.

Philip's next scheduled public appearance is alongside the queen as she opens the London 2012 Paralympic Games on August 29.

He appeared by her side at the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games at the end of July and accompanied her on a visit to the Olympic Park as the events got under way.

It has been a particularly busy year for the queen and Duke of Edinburgh because of the many events held to celebrate her diamond jubilee.

Addressing Parliament in March, the queen paid tribute to her husband as "a constant strength and guide" throughout her long reign.

The longest-serving consort in British history, Philip married then-Princess Elizabeth in November 1947 at Westminster Abbey.

Born the prince of Greece and Denmark on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921, Philip left Greece with his family when he was 18 months old after King Constantine was forced to abdicate the throne following a revolution. The family moved to Paris and then to England in 1928. Philip also went to school in Germany.

Philip renounced his Greek title when he became a naturalized British subject in 1947.

I was starting to get a bit worried, earlier today a report said he was continuing to make progress but none of the Royal
Family had been to visit him , although he was receiving phone calls from the Queen.

There's a programme on tomorrow on Channel 4 at 21.00 about Prince Philip's mother, Princess Alice. She sounds an interesting character.

There have been a couple of interesting programmes in recent years. The first one "The Lost Prince" was about John, the youngest son of George V and Queen Mary, who died in 1919 when he was 13. He was epileptic and probably autistic and, in those days, such things weren't discussed in public. My mother remembered a rumour going round that the reason he was so rarely seen was because he was the result of Queen Mary's affair with another man!

More recently there was one called "The Queen's Hidden Cousins" - two nieces of the Queen Mother who were institutionalised due to learning disabilities and were thought to be dead long ago. One of them was still alive when the programme was made.

I'm not criticising the Royal Family - the secrecy about mental health and what used to be called mental retardation was the norm everywhere.

There was a rumour that Alice was in an Asylum and apparently there was interbreeding amongst Royalty in Europe.

Because this programme is about the Dukes' Mother I doubt it will be too much of an expose.

The write up in the Radio Times mentions that she suffered from mental illness.

It's hardly a secret about any royal families interbreeding!
