Perhaps they're there to try and get the money out of TV3?

McCanns' fury at TV freeze Sunday Mirror (No direct online link - FindArticles.com)

By STEPHEN MAGUIRE
Dec 2, 2007

MADELEINE McCann's family are furious with TV3 bosses who froze a bank account which was meant to be used to help find the missing girl.

Almost EUR25,000 was raised by viewers of the TV station, based in Dublin, when it launched the Missing Maddie Fund in June. But station bosses decided not to hand over the cash because the main Maddie Fund was not a registered charity.

Last night Kate and Gerry McCann's family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said he was very disappointed at the station's move.

He said: "We would appeal to them to think again and forward the cash on so it can be used for the purpose it was intended".

"In relation to the charitable status of the fund we took legal advice on this issue and were advised not to do this".

"But we want to assure people, including TV3, that every penny of the fund can be accounted for." The TV3 Maddie appeal was launched in a blaze of publicity on June 1 after huge viewer interest in the plight of the missing four-year-old.

Donations of EUR24,345 soon flooded in, and the cash remains in an account at the Allied Irish Bank headquarters in Ballsbridge, Co Dublin, gathering interest.

A spokesman for the station said earlier that if a registered charity is not set up for Maddie the money will be donated to a registered child protection cause.
Unquote.

Interesting suggestion Tigger. maybe a reason to be here, if indeed they are. does anyone know if the schools in their area are on holiday this week for half term. if they are not, would they not wait until next week when the twins are on holiday.

the money is in the Allied Irish bank (AIB) which since the account was opened by Tv3 for madeleine has been taken over by the state as part of the Irish government's attempt to deal with its banking/financial crisis. There are rumours that TV3 is in trouble - it competes with the state TV service RTE which gets licence money as well as advertising. TV3 has only advertising which is hard to get in the recession.

Iv'e just replied to a post about this on another thread.!!! anyway, it was Allied Irish Bank who had Money Boxes on their counters and a Bank Account . when they realised the Fund wasn't a Charity they asked the donors what they wanted to do and listed a few charities who could do with the money, It was voted on and the donors split the money between the Charities.

There is a saying in Ireland, "I might be thick but I am not stupid". What happened with the TV3 fund explains that nicely. Pity more collections and donations were not with-held in the same way. I do not think the Irish campaign went quite according to plan for the McCanns, in so far as it was a bit of a damp squid. The Irish love a "connection" and the McCanns playing the Irish connection card was not as successful as they had hoped. The with-holding of this money must have been some kick in the behind for them. The Smiths being Irish is ironic.

The latest holiday article is the first step in the newest media campaign imo. Time to start publishing small, insignificant articles that actually say nothing, but are an attempt to re-inforce sympathy in the minds of the public. The final aim being when TB's case gets to court and is reported on, people are reading the about what big bold TB did with renewed sympathy at the back of their minds.

As a news article there is absolutely no reason for this to have been published. I went to Donegal 3 years ago, nobody reported on it

I would have been delighted to hear of your trip to Donegal, Mossman!

If I ever go there, it would be fun trying to track down some of the numerous McCann relatives who are supposed to be there.

Unless they are very distant cousins, there simply aren't any; possibly there are some on the Ferry (Gerry's mother's family) side though.

Thank you NBY, I might write a bewk and a sequel all about me and my week-end in Donegal.

It would be a very intersting exercise indeed to go in search of cousins.

The term "cousin" can be loosely used here. I grew up with loads of "cousins". It was only in later years when I questioned how these children could be my cousins, given they were not blood relatives to either side of my family, I was told they are not really cousins. They were simply children of adults who were life long friends of my own parents. To this day I call them cousins, but I have no idea why.

Weird but true !

There certainly are or were paedophile rings operating in Donegal as a quick google search has revealed but that is hardly rare sadly.

Mossman, it wasn't unusual years ago for family friends to be called uncles or aunts - and probably is still the case today; it was just a polite way to address them. I don't remember calling any children they had my cousins though.

Kate and Gerry were in Dublin only last year to promote the novel and appear on TV but we can hardly expect anyone capable of churning out a non-story like this to check their facts.

Tigger, I have heard of the witness who claims to have seen the family in Portugal at Easter 2007; most interesting but he could of course be mistaken. I suppose there is no chance now of checking CCTV or credit card receipts.

I would have to look it up again but the credit card records were refused.
The trip was paid for via Payne I think, very nice of DP to advance the total amount for 9 people plus children. So it wouldn't show up in their accounts.
But would a trip to Ireland have shown up? Perhaps not.

Just found it: Gazettadigital.
Home Office refused information about Gerry's credit cards

A request sent by PJ to British authorities, asking for details about Gerry McCann credit cards transactions for a period of six months, starting on April 1, six weeks before Madeleine's disappearance, was considered disproportionate by Frances Kennah, the Head of UK Central Authority, a Home Office department.

Morning tigger, I remember reading about that, the Home Secretary at the time was the one whose Husband bought porno videos and she claimed for them on her expenses.

Actually, she thought 6 months was too intrusive and asked the Portugese to submit another figure, but they never did.

Hi cass, the M & A of NoStoneUnturned were altered last November and one clause states that the Company could buy Properties. Ireland, like many Countries is in dire straits and prices of Properties have dropped considerably.......I wonder???

but did the original articles include the clause to buy properties? If it didn't this is significant in my view.

What I heard is that companies usually have very broad aims in their M&A; this is for flexibility if strategy changes down the line so they don't have to pay out on lawyers changing things. I suspect though the property reference and lots of other seemingly irrelevant stuff was in the original company docs.

Yes indeed - and that's why I thought this quote was rather telling:

Surely that should read:

just a left field thought, if the rumours are true that the McC are living separate lives, would the purchase of property by the fund allow for one of them to purchase a property near their work? just musing..

if the M & A of the company says the company can purchase property then of course it can buy something and permit one of the McCanns to live in it.

Someone posted earlier that the company documents do permit the purchase of property. It is quite common apparently for companies to have this in their m&A.

It's hard to imagine though that there could be sufficient money left in the fund for this. No doubt the next lot of "transparent" accounts will answer all our questions......

it depends where the property is.

Location sets the price.

A 2 bedroomed terraced property in some smaller northern towns would only cost £80,000-£90,000.
