It has gone from we must think of the effect on the Dowlers and the McCanns... to on the McCanns and the Dowlers... to on the McCanns. Gerry McCann strides masterfully across the Sky TV window on my TV monitor. Do you think he will stand for parliament? Watch out Ed Milliband! As the lead person speaking for Hacked Off he has even banished all those celebs and TV stars and self publicists like Hugh Grant. Mccann even had Chris Jeffries in tow! How much more would I prefer to listen to Chris Jeffries!

No... he strode across the screen to the newsman saying what I wrote above. It was all 'Gerry McCann says...' etc. He had on a swishy coat/mac over his clothes and he looked like a cross between Sherlock and Batman. Chris Jeffries: I didn't know what a small in stature man he was, tagged along. No other person got a look in re fury at the likely non-implementation of statutory underpinning of press controls... not even Hugh Grant!

I am just about to post an e-mail on the Leveson thread which may interest you..it's under U.K. News.

I read on the Sky News website that Hugh Grant, Chris Jefferies and Gerry McCann "kicked off" the Hacked Off campaign.

I would like to hear that Hugh Grant and Chris Jefferies KICKED GERRY MCCANN OFF THEIR CAMPAIGN.

He looks ill and has lost weight,and who was the smug looking bird he was with,new girlfriend ?

Definitely looking for a job in politics now being thrust to the fore,presumably a safe labour seat next time one of them pops his clogs,give him a good excuse to move away from the sour faced healy.

What a mess this country is in when a notorious child neglector is allowed such a platform by our mainstream media to comment on such an important matter as media regulation.

Whilst dirty peado's infest the higher eschelons of our society and our law enforcement agencies do little more than question benign and innocent entertainers.

lioned ,I will be surprised if Cameron is still PM in 2015, the Conservatives were deadly when they wanted Margaret Thatcher out .......mind, having said that, there is not one Conservative MP with leadership qualities. My bet is on Boris, but he wants to stay in the EU.

I suppose he could team up with Prince Charles and reinvent the Looney Party.

Just watched Gerry on a video on Sky News. He said that when Kate was shown talking after the Leveson news conference, a newspaper front page from 2008 was shown that said the McCanns were lying. Gerry said that Amelie read it and asked "why are they saying that?" Could be Gerry is fibbing here for sympathy and enhancing his victim status, but the twins will see a lot more of that on the internet as they grow older. I'll bet Gerry would love to censor all of the blogs, Twitter, Facebook, old news stories etc. Maybe that's his next task!

Actually Lioned, that is where people misjudge him, he comes across as the buffoon , but to become President of the Students Union at Eton shows he has a few grey cells and he is very popular which goes a long way.I think we would find he would take the job seriously. He's not flash or he wouldn't be riding a bike to work.

He doesn't have to play the buffoon panda.if you'd heard his ponderings on why our British kids don't want to work in Mcdonalds you would understand what i'm on about.
He's probably good at entertaining Japanease business men and letting off balloons at the school fete but putting together a cabinet full of competent strategic thinkers,well i doubt it !

Exactly, Anna... surely it isn't only just dawning on the Kate and Gerry that the twins are going to realise just how loathsome and self centred their parenting skills were? It will however take a 'burning of the books' of a gargantuan proportion to destroy the wealth of plausible evidence available describing the McCanns involvement in Madeleine's disappearance and their failure to contribute to the physical search.

Some of the victims of phone hacking and press intrusion have launched an e-petition calling for Lord Justice Leveson's recommendations for press regulation to be implemented.

Gerry McCann, the father of missing Madeleine McCann, the actor Hugh Grant and Chris Jefferies, a retired school teacher who won damages from eight newspapers, today kicked off the Hacked Off campaign.

In his evidence to the Leveson Inquiry, Gerry McCann described how he and his wife Kate were treated like a commodity, as an “insatiable” hunt for headlines led to the sacrifice, not only of the search for the truth, but of their “dignity, privacy and well-being”.

Following the publication of Lord Justice Leveson's report into the culture, practices and ethics of the press, Gerry McCann had earlier urged the Prime Minister to reconsider his position on the regulation of the press, calling on him to 'do the right thing'.

Speaking to the Today programme this morning McCann told presenter John Humphrys that "without the statutory underpinning this system will not work."

I don't think the report has gone far enough... he has given the press another opportunity of self regulation," Mr McCann said.

"I have concerns that this system is not compulsory."

He said he opposed the Prime Minister's stance against any statutory underpinning saying: "I would have liked to have seen a properly independent regulation of the press, whereas I think he has given the press another opportunity of self-regulation,"

"The other thing I find a little disappointing from the report is that we don't have a clear roadmap and timescales for implementation which I would have liked to have seen laid out a bit more clearly."

Although the couple received damages for some of the coverage of them in the national press Mr McCann said that no one was "brought to task", arguing that there should be more accountability for reporters and photographers.

Mr McCann explained that damaging material can still be found on the internet relating to the family: "There is still a tremendous amount of vile [sic] written about us [on the internet]... and we have to face that going forward on a daily basis... and our twins who are almost eight will have to deal with that."

He said that the "ludicrous" press coverage of the case - which suggested there was evidence to link the couple to their daughter's disappearance - continued to cast a shadow over their family.

"Thankfully, for us, I would say the vast majority of the British public did not believe what was written", he continued.

The findings of Lord Justice Leveson's inquiry into press standards and practices were released yesterday in a document comprising four volumes and over two thousand pages.

Within hours of its publication, however, the Prime Minister had taken to the dispatch box to state his opposition to its main recommendation: that the press should be regulated by law to prevent further wrongdoing.

Mr Cameron said that he had “principled and practical” concerns about “crossing the Rubicon” and legislating to control the press, while the Labour leader Ed Miliband insisted Parliament should “put its faith” in all Leveson’s recommendations.

In an unusual split with his Coalition partner, Nick Clegg came out in favour of the legislaion saying any new regulator must not just be "independent for a few months”.

In response to the publication of the report, and the comments today from Mr McCann, Culture Secretary Maria Miller told the programme: "The horrific experiences of the McCanns and others cannot be allowed to happen again and that is why we are absolutely clear that we fully accept the principles of Leveson but, as you would expect, we would look at the details of implementation.

"We have some grave concerns about the principle of putting into place statutory underpinning for this new self-regulatory body but we are also not convinced that it is absolutely necessary to achieve the objectives that both Lord (Justice) Leveson set out and indeed the victims have set out."

She declined repeatedly to say whether she believed the statutory underpinning recommendation was "bonkers" - the test previously suggested by Mr Cameron for whether he would implement any proposed reforms.

"What we are absolutely doing is going to move forward with the core recommendation of the Leveson report, which is an independent self-regulatory body," she said.

"Actually the judge did say that it was a matter of detail. The prime focus of the judge's report yesterday was the importance of the press themselves to now come forward with a self-regulatory body framework that can work. That's what the McCanns and others want to see.

"What he wants to see is effective regulation. What we are saying is that we have grave concerns about making that effective regulation underpinned with statute.

"What we are concerned about is creating amendable legislation that could in the future give a framework which could give Parliament the opportunity of stopping reporting on certain areas.

"You have to consider that carefully before going forwards."

She said the draft legislation was being drawn up "to look at what that Bill might look like, to demonstrate our concerns"

Boris is alright in my view Lioned. He knows what needs doing in this country. He is definitely not a buffoon. Pity he is not prime minister. He would soon sort euroland out as far as we are concerned. Plus put the criminals behind bars where they should be. Plus stop this absolute uncontrolled immigration which we cannot support.

"comperent strategic thinkers"......where is anyone going to get them Lioned, there is not one Government dept. functioning , never mind improving. We shall see, but out of the Labour Party, Liberal Party and of course Conservative there is not one competent Minister with an affinity with the people he is head and shoulders above them.

I read it that the newspaper was from 2008 !

I knew Gerry would appear at sometime, after reading all the post on FB and Twitter asking what the hell has happened to Gez, Kate as usual all on her lonesome, her turning up at the Levison yesterday, looking old and unkept it was all a buz yesterday asking where is Gerry? (reminds me of that book "Where's Wally") ...........then low and behold like majic he turns up on TV today.

Nice to know that Kate and Gez keeps an eye on whats spoke about on blogs, FB and Twitter

Actually i can just see kate mccann reading that to the twins for their bedtime story.Sort of thing she would do whilst it might occur to a proper mother to protect her children from such hurtful things.

Just looked at front pages on Sky News. The McCanns don't seem to appear on any of them which must be a first following any of their public appearances.

Nobody writes a book for 2 people to read. Why did she publish it and do the rounds selling it to the public? If the book was for the twins only, why did she write such upsetting and disgusting material for them to read about their missing sister? Unfrigginbelievable!

It really is unbelievable that the mother of a missing child can write:
