Fury Over Madeleine Crying 'Smear'
1:35pm UK, Friday 11 April 2008
Kate and Gerry McCann have hit back after the leak of a police interview revealed that their daughter Madeleine had asked why she had been left to cry in the night.
The interview transcript was obtained by Spanish television journalist Nacho Abad, who claimed he could not reveal his source.
But Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for the McCanns, said the statement would have come from within the Portuguese police and launched a blistering attack on their attempts to "smear" the McCanns.
"It is a shameless, brazen and very cack-handed," he told Sky News.
"The Portuguese government must now get a grip on whatever element it is within the Portuguese police that is responsible for these leaks and smears."
"They have continued since last summer and when the officer in charge of the inquiry, the man brought in to sort it out, is visiting here, off they go again.
"We know what they're up to, it is ridiculous and must stop," he said.
Mr Mitchell added that the release of the confidential police documents was a "blatant and timed smear campaign", designed to coincide with the McCanns' efforts to promote a child alert system in Brussels.
"While we were having breakfast, Madeleine said: 'Mum, why didn't you come when we were crying last night?'," she said.
She added: "Gerry and I talked about it for several minutes and decided to watch over the children more carefully at night."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
KATE "decided to watch over the children more carefully at night"

WELL, THAT CERTAINLY WORKED A TREAT, DIDN'T IT KATE?

Mystery couple seen going into McCanns’ flat on night before sobbing Maddie disappeared

Sunday Express

Mystery couple seen going into McCanns’ flat on night before sobbing Maddie disappeared

SCOTLAND YARD detectives are trying to find a middle-aged couple said to have entered Madeleine McCann’s holiday apartment to comfort her because she was crying, we can reveal today.

By: James Murray
Published: Sun, May 19, 2013

Madeleine’s tears alerted a resident on eve of her disappearance

It is believed they entered the bedroom on May 2, 2007, the evening before Madeleine disappeared from the Ocean Club at Praia da Luz on Portugal’s Algarve.

The tip-off was given by two key witnesses who were reinterviewed as part of the Yard’s two-year, £4.5million investigation.

It is already known that Pamela Fenn, who lived directly above apartment 5a, heard a child, believed to be Madeleine, crying for about an hour on the evening of May 2.

She was so concerned she rang a friend in the village to ask what to do and considered ringing Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria.

At the time, Madeleine’s mother Kate and father Gerry were dining with friends at a tapas bar some 50 yards from the apartment.

A source said: “Police were astonished when this new information came to light. Officers spoke to other key witnesses to discover more about the middle-aged couple.

“Apparently they were concerned about the crying and went to see if they could comfort the girl.”

Pamela Fenn has since died, so police have been speaking to other people who were staying in the same apartments.

Our revelation comes as Scotland Yard detectives say there are potentially 20 suspects they want to speak to. Retiring Detective Chief Superintendent Hamish Campbell, head of the Yard’s Homicide and Serious Crime Command, urged Portuguese authorities to investigate the new leads.

He said: “There are a lot of people of interest. There are people who could be properly explored further, if only to be eliminated.”

Scotland Yard officers have been interviewing witnesses here for months, although the public prosecutor in Portugal has decided against reopening the investigation.

Despite claims of a “Mexican stand off” between Portuguese police and Yard officers, the Sunday Express understands there is in fact very good co-operation between both squads.

Pedro de Carmo, deputy national leader of the PJ, said yesterday: “We still co-operate with their team. There are good communications.”

Portuguese officers are very impressed with the diligence of the Met investigation and have been impressed with their interviews with witnesses in Britain.

We can confirm that a couple staying in the same block as apartment 5a were interviewed last February.

They were in their apartment on the night Madeleine vanished. Afterwards they wrote an account of what they saw but were never formally interviewed by Portuguese detectives.

They had been at a restaurant earlier in the evening and left at about 9pm.

"The McCanns were in bits, he was crying on the shoulder of a friend. She was screaming: ‘The f*****g bastards have taken her’"
The woman’s statement

On their way home they walked directly past the entrance to the Ocean Club pool, where the “Tapas 7” (the name given to the friends eating with the McCanns on the night Madeleine disappeared) were enjoying the meal with Kate and Gerry.

They walked past apartment 5a but noticed nothing untoward. The woman said in her statement: “I stood on the balcony at about 9.15 with a whisky.

“I saw people eating at the tapas bar and children in the play area. We went to bed at 10pm-ish. We were woken up by our bell ringing at 11.30pm. It was a friend of the McCanns, saying that a little girl had been abducted. The friend asked if we had a computer so they could get the media involved in the search.

“Two police were on the corner of our block, one lady said that off-duty police had come and were searching. We did see single men on mobiles while we were out who could have been police.”

The couple took part in the search for Madeleine and then returned to their apartment.

The woman’s statement continues: “We walked back up towards our apartment, a group had gathered on the corner. The McCanns were in bits, he was crying on the shoulder of a friend. She was screaming: ‘The f*****g bastards have taken her’. Finally, at around 4am, we said: ‘Is it OK if we go to bed?’ We directed this comment towards a man in a white shirt and jeans, who seemed to be authoritative.”

At the couple’s home here, two Yard officers questioned them separately for three hours and got them to sign lengthy statements. They further interviewed them this year to double check their information.

The couple are key because at precisely 9.15pm on May 3, Jane Tanner, a friend of the McCanns, said she left the tapas bar and walked past Gerry, who was talking to holidaymaker Jez Wilkins outside apartment 5a.

Neither Gerry nor Kate said they saw Jane. She reported that she had seen a man carrying a child, believed to be Madeleine, walking across the top of the road.

At the time she had not realised the significance. Officers asked the couple if they saw Jane, Gerry or Jez but they insist they did not.

The Sunday Express has visited the couple’s holiday apartment, which looks over the tapas bar. From its balcony you can see directly into the garden of apartment 5a.

The woman said: “We have one of the best views of the whole block. We are sure of the timings. If we had seen anyone we would have remembered.

“We will continue to answer the Yard’s questions. We have given our fingerprints and DNA. We were happy to assist. They should be left to get on with their inquiries.”

Its an odd article. On the one hand it is suggesting that there were persons unknown who were in the apartment (you would have thought if this were the case and a girl was missing the witnesses would have been the first queueing up to give statements) but overall it is throwing a big question mark over the claims of regular checks both on the night of the disappearance and earlier nights.

I think it does that quite nicely. It mentions the crying for over an hour and shows the distance from Tapas Bar to apartment and those basic ideas should get some people thinking.

so its been said that it is impossible for madeleine to be abducted during the checks -- the tapas know that and so does the mcanns -- to make this possible -- there has to be someone thats said no checks were done at all - what night was it rumoured that they all went to chaplins bar ? so next question who did die in apt -- with the tia case on the news this week and the poice failing to find her and the dogs doing their job is this to stop talk of the dogs and how good they are ? even my mother has taken a interest in these dogs now -and she never did till this week

How could Kate see Jane, she was in the tapas.

I remember witness statements off these two and their kids....I think it was either the carpenters who aren't Middle aged or another couple who heard the word ' maddie' being shouted.

It also blows the Jane tanner abduction theory well out off the window .

And if the mysterious couple entering the flat to confort Madeleine was ...Kate and Gerry McCann coming back from the restaurant? The 3 may , after the incident,, witnesses not knowing the Mccanns, could have mention that to the PJ that, after deductions, knew it was the parents and didn't interview them again.
And the "exclusive information" would be a spin of the journalists.

I remember something too kitti. A couple who threw the timeline the tapas gave for the discovery out by saying they left the tapas at 9. The drink on the balcony is familiar as well, it's just a hazy memory filed away, but I have definitely read a statement similar to this in the files.

The Express insinuating there may be a difficulty with tanners statement is interesting. Otherwise I think Clarrie is on overtime commenting furiously and looking for new, but unhurtful and unhelpful statements to make.

Of all of the journalists to work on this story, I think Brunt will bear the biggest grudge against the McCanns. He was made to look a fool back in 2007 when he gave that report about Kate being considered the guilty one and the DNA evidence etc. then suddenly, whoosh, gone, never again to be mentioned. If nothing else, he wants to be considered a serious journalist, not some every day tabloid reporter where the facts are not all that important.

Brunt has waited a long time for his pound of flesh and I think he, of all people, will be beside himself with glee if he can report a breaking news story live and immediate from the crime scene.

He's not there to get a tan, that is for sure.

Here's a thought. If this middle aged couple isnt Kate and Gerry, perhaps they did exist and kate and gerry knew about it. For city folk the idea of people being communty minded and seeing if a child in prolonged distress may be weird but in the countryside it is what many people
Might do. Kate and Gerry may have seen these people as interfering. The next
Night when they left the kids alone again and maddie had an accident, the memory of these strangers visiting would have been strong in their mind. Hence the formulation of the plot.

I live in the countryside where people wander in and out of each others houses without knocking, where a back door is always open. It is what neighbours do.

It is the last thing I would do in a foreign country, especially if a child were involved, in this day and age. If I heard an adult screaming, then yes, I would be inclined to knock on a door, shout, etc. if I heard a child in distress, I would leave my husband there and run to reception to get an independent person before entering the apartment. That is just me though. It would want to be severe distress, on the point of hysteria before I would go in alone.

But yes, what you say is definitely possible. What age is middle age ?

If you were the middle aged couple surely you would have approached the parents after this to alert them. I suspect they did but the mccanns never mentioned it. If they did know and still went out the next night why on earth is there no arrest for neglect

Post  Wintabells on Sun 19 May - 11:02

Right at the start of this mystery, when the Tapas9 were being interviewed by the police, I remember seeing footage of various people being driven from the Ocean club to the police station to be questioned. In one of the news reports we saw a middle-aged couple (he with white hair and she with sort of blonde/grey hair tied in a ponytail). Does anyone know who these people were? I wonder if they were the middle-aged couple?

On another note, ‘The f*****g bastards have taken her’ is such an odd thing to say even if you do believe your child has been abducted. Surely 'someone's f*****g taken her' would make more sense? It's reminiscent of 'They've taken her' which has since been so vehemently denied (and was the very thing that made me first take a much more careful look at the parents).
