The singer is understood to have asked for up to £1,500 a day to spend on her
styling, hair and make-up during promotional and live events.

The decision to drop the Welsh mezzo-soprano comes just five years after the
32-year-old signed a £5.8 million, three-album contract with Warner Music
Entertainment, the biggest classical recording deal in history.

Jenkins signed the deal in 2008 in a bid to crack the US market and become a
global superstar, but her sales have since slumped, with her last album, This is
Christmas, peaking at number 26 in the UK album charts.

A music industry source told the Daily Mail last night: “Some estimates say
she has lost the record company over £2 million. Her record sales are not doing
well.

“£1,500-a-day on hair and make-up and styling is not an outrageous amount to
spend on an artist, but only if they are selling lots of records.

“It wasn’t a motivating factor in the decision to part company, but it was a
last straw.”

Jenkins’ singing style has been described as ‘classical crossover’ – a
mixture of opera and pop.

She started singing in her church choir and worked as a music teacher before
signing a six-album, £1 million recording contract with Universal in 2003.

She became one of the UK’s most successful UK female soloists, with her first
album, Premiere, becoming the fastest-selling classical CD of all time – more
than 30,000 copies were sold in its first week.

But she left Universal in 2008 to sign the lucrative deal with Warner
Brothers, saying she hoped to “take classical music to a wider audience”.

A spokesman for the singer said last night: “Katherine is looking at options
at the moment, details of which will be announced soon.”
