The McCanns knew from the very start that they would be "vilified" and that is why they had P.R./image consultants working on their behalf.

What other parents of a "missing" child have such a team working for them. They go out looking themselves while hoping and praying the child will be found at any moment.

Now Duarte doesn't even know who is testifying...

I think the answer to why Gerry McCann keeps going back is because when he loses, not being able to testify he will use his trump card....I.e.   'I wasn't allowed to speak up for Madeleine so that is why we lost the case' .

He has to be seen to be 'trying', it's all theatre and we know it.

He knew full well he couldn't testify but to his supporters, he tried and he wasn't allowed to speak out.
That is spot on Kitti as far as I am concerned. He will of course get the chance to say that the judge has refused him which of course he missed out on last time. The UK press will of course omit to say why. Those nasty foreigners are at it again will be the story

"She said that people were talking about them at school, and that it was not all good things that had been said.

"In the past Sean has come in and said to Gerry, 'Daddy are you famous?'

"Gerry said, 'why are you asking that?', and he said because a boy at school had seen him on the television.

"Gerry continued doing what he was doing and said, 'no I'm not famous, it's because your sister is missing'.
I find this very upsetting.

There have been other children missing, found, reunited, or sadly found murdered, but do we know who their parents are? No, their parents faces are not so well known that we would instantly recognise them.

I think of April Jones. Would I walk past her parents in the street? Yes probably, because I would not recognise them.

FGS, when you have other children to consider, you surely must take into consideration their feelings too. Its just not fair on the twins to be having these things told to them in school by other children.

The real torment for the twins is that their parents think more of looking for Madeleine than they do about the twins' feelings.

We have SY on the case, we have PI's on the case and, yes, it is possible to publicise missing Madeleine in such a way that does not involve her parents' faces on TV. Madeleine is being kept in the public eye, its not true to say she is not, but let the experts look for her. Perhaps it was right for Kate and Gerry to bring pressure on SY to investigate but this could have been done away from the glare of publicity. Kate and Gerry just need to work on this in the background and let others find Madeleine. I thought this was the idea of having Clarrie?

Gerry and Kate could have kept away from Portugal for this trial. For the sake of their twins they should have done.

They were never on the witness list and no need for them to be there, so who is causing the twins all this damage? Yes, Kate and Gerry.

I doubt the twins even know the name of Mr Amaral, know his face, etc but unfortunately Kate and Gerry are ensuring that this will change.

does anyone else think this "blunder" by ID is part of a strategy to throw herself on the court and beg for G McC to testify because she erred. you know like justice cannot be forgone because she messed up. just wondering out loud. would put nothing past any of them.

Will they sack her, the way they sacked Justine McGuinness?

I think they would probably like to sack her, but half way through a court case its not possible, too late for another lawyer to get a head around all the documentation.

It could be part of their strategy because at this point their chances of winning are limited, actually I believe non-existent. From day one it has all been about strategy - I'll never get that image of the flipchart containing the flowchart out of my mind.

What does the Great McCann need another lawyer for? He could do it himself, better than any lawyer. He has already told Justine what she should be charging. He's told the police how to do their jobs. He's tried to tell the judge how to do her job. He's told MPs how to do their jobs. He's told the press how to run a newspaper. He's told the Government how to set up alert systems. He's told Martin Grime how to do his job. Gerry can do anything! Oh he's great, he really is! A little thing like representing himself in a court case should be a walk in the park!

From AFP , an article published today in which G.Amaral expreses his fish to testify in this trial:

http://www.romandie.com/news/n/_Le_pere_de_Maddie_a_Lisbonne_pour_temoigner_contre_l_ex_enqueteur_Amaral_RP_021020131631-18-405937.asp

Maddie 's father in Lisbon to testify against former investigator Amaral

LISBON - Gerry McCann, the father of Maddie disappeared in Portugal in 2007 , was back on Wednesday in Lisbon, where he hopes to be heard in the libel case that pitted him against Gonçalo Amaral , former investigator of the case .

It is not safe ... But we'll see what the judge will say. I hope to be heard, Gerry McCann said on his arrival at court , accompanied by her sister Trish Cameron and his stepmother Susan Healy .

The court has until Oct. 8 to rule on that request. He is ready to come back any time if the court agrees , told AFP Isabel Duarte, the lawyer of the British family .

The father of Madeleine McCann had already made the trip to Lisbon last week , before leaving in a few minutes because the hearing had been postponed at the request of counsel for Mr. Amaral has cited family reasons.

Mr Amaral was in charge of the investigation into the disappearance of Maddie May 3, 2007 in a room of a resort of Praia da Luz , a small seaside resort in southern Portugal . The case sparked an unprecedented media campaign.

The McCanns , who believes the removal of Maddie says Mr Amaral 's book Maddie , the survey prohibited , published in July 2008 just after the closure of the case , in which he defends the thesis of accidental death of the child , involving parents .

According to them, this book also adapted into a television documentary has hampered research Maddie . The family claims 1.25 million in compensation for the damage suffered by the charges contained in this book.

I understand that this book could disrupt the lives of McCann ... But it contains nothing new, nothing that has not already been published before . Why do they persist media to a single story? , Has protested to the press Vitor Santos Oliveira, Gonçalo Amaral 's lawyer .

Dropping his usual reserve , Mr Amaral , backpack shoulder , briefly answered reporters to tell them he wanted to speak much in this case.

I hope that the court will accept . I attend all the hearings, he said.

Wednesday morning , while Trish Cameron evoked court the consequences of this book on the lives of the family, the father of Maddie waited, sitting on a marble bench , outside the courtroom , by tapping laptop.

Kate McCann 's mother , Susan Healy, had also made the trip hoping to testify, but the court refused .

In September 2007 , Kate and Gerry McCann had been indicted , suspected by Mr. Amaral, then head of the investigation , to have hidden the body of their daughter after an accidental death . Since then they have been cleared and the investigation has been classified by the Portuguese police.

The court set the final arguments to November 27 .

Perhaps they are constructing excuses in advance to explain why they lost the case - incompetent lawyer - inflexible judge (not allowing GM to testify).
On the other hand, they may be genuinely incompetent, particularly if GM is not listening to advice.
