Analysis
of Danny Shaw Danny Shaw Home affairs correspondent, BBC News

Scotland Yard has turned the inquiry on its head. Establishing that the Jane Tanner sighting was a "red herring" has opened up possibilities that were all but ruled out by previous investigators - not least the man seen with a child at 10pm.

The importance detectives have put on tracking that man down suggests they may have other information about him they haven't shared; perhaps phone records hold the key, as detectives indicated 10 days ago.

The question as to why it has taken six years for the Tanner sighting to be bottomed out and why e-fits of the 10pm suspect, compiled five years ago, have only now been publicised are uncomfortable ones - but are probably best addressed to the Portuguese authorities, who conducted the first investigation.

The Portuguese weren't running the show show then, it was being run by Kate and Gerry McCann

The case was already shelved before these e fits were commissioned by met3 and MUST off been shown to the mccanns as Kennedy has stated everything that came in regarding sightings etc were run by the mccanns, they were kept up to date by Kennedy.

The reporting accuracy and the blame game gets more absurd by the day. The real question is why the PIs sat on these e-fits for 5 years. Amaral throughout has stressed the importance of the Smith sighting (even in articles published as recently as last year).

Kitti I know he said that to the Irish police in his statement when talking about Kennedy visiting etc. has he been quoted elsewhere ? Or is it possible he did it after that police statement ? I was wondering about that too

So it would be logical to suppose that somebody else gave these e-fits and they have sat in the files for years.

Perhaps he gave e fit to the pj and we don't know about it, yet.

Can't wait for mr amarals revised book to come out where he reveals what knowone knows apart from him.

THAT'S what the suing is about and when mr amaral says 'reveal all' he will and it's not a SY reveal .

re ga i really hope that he wins - i have always been on his side - but the reveal all doesnt add up to me - unless it is just talk about the mcanns and how they acted bla bla - but that ga has something that can turn this case around i cannot believe because unless he reveals all in a court of law -what im hoping for soon - what can it be ?
