Madeleine McCann’s parents are “absolutely delighted” with the response to a BBC Crimewatch appeal for help tracing their missing daughter.

Kate and Gerry McCann said they hoped the “overwhelming” response to their appearance on Monday night’s programme would lead to a breakthrough in the case.

Almost 1,000 people contacted the Metropolitan Police’s incident room or the Crimewatch studio during and after the programme.
It was also reported yesterday that the programme had recorded its largest ever audience.

The Met, which is leading the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance from the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on Thursday, May 3, 2007, is now following up the 730 telephone calls and 212 e-mails.
The couple, who live in Rothley, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the overwhelming public response to Crimewatch.
“We know that the public desperately want to help the search for Madeleine.
“We are genuinely hopeful that one or more of these responses will lead to a major breakthrough in the investigation.”
The major development announced during the show was that a man who was a prime suspect for six years, after he was seen carrying a young child on the night Madeleine disappeared, had almost certainly been ruled out of the inquiry. Senior officer in the case Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said the man had been identified as an innocent British tourist.
Instead, officers now want to identify a different man who was seen carrying a child in his arms near the McCanns’ apartment on the night Madeleine went missing. The Met has released two artists’ impressions – known as e-fits – of the man.
On Crimewatch, Det Chf Insp Redwood also released e-fits of another four men he wants to trace in connection with the incident.
Investigators are looking at possible links between Madeleine’s disappearance and a series of burglaries in Ocean Club complex, where the McCanns were staying, as well as a reportedly bogus charity collections in the area in the days and weeks before the then three-year-old vanished.
The Met confirmed yesterday (TUE) that following the Crimewatch appeal, two callers independently passed on the same name for one of the men depicted in the e-fits.
Detectives are now sifting through the information from Crimewatch viewers. They stressed that the process could “take time”.
Det Chief Insp Redwood said: “We are extremely pleased with the response to the Crimewatch appeal.
“We have now had over 730 calls and 212 e-mails as a direct result of the specific lines of inquiry we issued concerning events in the lead up to and on the night when Madeleine was abducted.
“Detectives are now trawling through and prioritising that material. This will take time.”
The appeal will also be featured on television in Germany, Holland and Portugal.
The Metropolitan Police is offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information which leads to the identification, arrest and prosecution of those responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance.
Det Chief Insp Redwood added: “We have at any time 40 people waiting to answer calls at the Hendon call centre and officers at the incident room waiting to action the information.”
In a joint statement, Kate and Gerry added: “If anyone was in Praia da Luz around the time of Madeleine's abduction and has not spoken to the Metropolitan Police, or if they know who any of the e-fits might be, please have the courage to come forward and speak to the police in confidence.”
Contact the incident room on 0800 096 1011.
