Madeline McCann: Police hunt three 'gypsies' seen lurking near holiday apartment
27 Oct 2013 12:27 The men were suspected of being behind a string of burglaries around the resort in the weeks leading up to the youngster being snatched
Police are hunting three men said to be gypsies seen lurking near Madeleine McCann’s holiday apartment before her disappearance, the Sunday People can reveal.
The men were suspected of being behind a string of burglaries around the resort in the weeks leading up to the youngster being snatched .
Police on the re-opened case want to interview janitors who blamed the gypsies for the break-ins.
Officers believe the maintenance men, who fixed a blind in the McCanns’ holiday flat two days before Madeleine went missing in May 2007, are crucial to the case.
Luis Ferro and Mario Moreira were ordered to flat 5A to mend a broken blind in Kate and Gerry’s bedroom at 10am on May 1.
Mr Ferro, quizzed by Portuguese police four days after Madeleine vanished, said gypsies had been active in the area at the time.
He mentioned a warehouse near the resort’s Millennium Restaurant where he said the three gypsies had stolen firewood and scrap metal.
The “potentially highly significant” evidence was dismissed as “not relevant or useful” by officers involved in the controversial initial probe – led by disgraced former police chief Goncalo Amaral.
But it is now being taken seriously after a four-year-old blonde girl was last week found living with gypsies, who had bought her for just £750 in Greece.
As part of the same line of inquiry, police are also re-examining a suspected sighting of Madeleine the day after she vanished.
The witness reported seeing a girl matching her description laying in the back of a white van driven by two “gypsies” 160 miles away.
The new probe by Portuguese and British police has boosted the hopes of the missing youngster’s anguished parents Kate and Gerry, both 45.
Police in Portugal have drawn up a list of 41 “people of interest” and e-fit pictures have been issued of a man seen carrying a child near the resort after Madeleine was taken.
Aged three, Madeleine vanished from the McCanns’ apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, while her parents were eating tapas nearby.
They are being kept briefed on developments, but their Portuguese lawyer Rogerio Alves said: “The police asked us not to compromise the investigation and we are obliged to respect the secrecy order.
“It would be a crime for anyone working with full information on the details to talk about it.”
Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, yesterday appealed for people to be “patient” as the new begins.
In a message on their Find Madeleine website, where they have posted a picture of how Maddy would look today aged nine, they asked people to “respect the work of the police as they endeavour to find the answers.”
They added: “We’re very pleased the investigation to find Madeleine has officially been reopened in Portugal.
Anyone with information should contact police, either here in the UK or in Portugal.”

Re: GNR Police Dismisses SY Claims of "Robberies" in the Area of PDL
Early on it was reported that holiday-makers in Praia da Luz were being warned about burglaries in the area. I wonder now if that was a serious warning or part of the McCanns smoke and mirrors.

The more we read AnnaEsse, the more we realise that Redwood is a plonker.!!! I dread to think who the rest of the "41 persons of interest" are.

Re: GNR Police Dismisses SY Claims of "Robberies" in the Area of PDL
It is good though, that all these 'persons of interest' (however tenuous. sketchy or simply fabricated) are being eliminated.
It all serves to narrow the field, and can only lead investigators in one inevitable direction ......
And the McCanns will never be able to complain: "You never looked at ABC or XYZ."

So, with the latest suspect accused of burgling the apartments to get money for his heroin fix, were there burglaries or not?quickfingers wrote:Just spotted this on Twitter:

Or is it the difference between robbery and burglary. Robbery, in this country at least, is a far more serious crime, usually involving the use of weapons/violence.
Burglary is less serious, usually petty break ins, albeit upsetting when it happens for the victims.
So, GNR dismiss claims of robberies in the area, but PJ have a suspect who they say was known to break in and steal from the holiday apartments in PDL.

As desperate as they are to free the McCanns from any and all responsibility, a pulseless suspect will do nicely...AnnaEsse wrote:Anybody with a pulse who came within 100 metres of the McCanns!Panda wrote:

Crucial?Really? or simply need to be re interviewed to be ruled out? Rather like some key suspects we know of

Re: GNR Police Dismisses SY Claims of "Robberies" in the Area of PDL
I am curious as to how the blinds broke in the first place. The blinds are standard and are very difficult to "break" the pully is very very tough - also made of a very hard teflon laminate. The only problems these blinds may cause is if one pulls too hard and the latch at the very top can get stuck in the grooves. Only needs a strong person to pull it back in place, so how the blinds came to be "broke" is very curious in itself.widowan wrote:

The reason why I say this, my daughter lives in Algarve, mum in law has property all over and ALL the blinds are almost EXACTLY the same in ALL houses and apartments.
Could this be the McCanns were tampering with the blinds before 3rd May (few days before) as this is when it is theorised Maddie could have passed?? could one of the McCanns have indeed pulled way to hard and the latch could have snapped - just a thought, as my daughter ALWAYS tells me "mommy dont pull to hard - it will get stuck AGAIN and you will break it" - on my last trip a month back I had a good look - a tug and a pull and conclusion is there is NO way these blinds - just break.

Kate said in her book that Gerry broke the blind, if I am remembering rightly.
It's one of those pieces of information that most people in the world would not even remember given the other events that occurred, yet it is a highlight of their holiday that week. Like quite a few other things, I think there is a reason.
i have wondered if Gerry was trying to establish how the blind could be tampered with, using that one as a dry run, if you like. Which day was it, I cannot remember and don't have the book any longer.

Well if he was pulling blinds to and fro then they weren't being left down. the maids said they saw them up when they went to clean -not the ones in the master bedroom, the other ones.

The blinds were fixed on Tuesday, 1 May between 1000 and 1100 at which time Kate was also shown how to use the washing machine.

Re: GNR Police Dismisses SY Claims of "Robberies" in the Area of PDL
And that's another thing that doesn't sit right with me. We all know that Kate has her own washing machine at home, because we saw it in the Mockumentary. How difficult can it be to work out how to use a different one? I wouldn't dream of asking a workman to show me how to use a washing machine! It sounds to me like she's setting up an alibi for something. But what, and why?jinvta wrote:The blinds were fixed on Tuesday, 1 May between 1000 and 1100 at which time Kate was also shown how to use the washing machine.

i wonder if she's trying to imply that she hadn't used the washing machine up until that date (May 1st) when she was 'shown how to use it'?Iris wrote:And that's another thing that doesn't sit right with me.
