Tony Blair Told By Rebekah Brooks She Was 'Terrified' Of Police Probe, Texts Show
The Huffington Post UK | By Jessica Elgot

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/03/12/rebekah-brooks-tony-blair_n_4948672.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cuk-ws-bb%7Cdl1%7Csec3_lnk1%26pLid%3D249418

Rebekah Brooks texted Tony Blair that she was "feeling properly terrified" the day before a police interview, exchanging many texts with him in the days leading up to her arrest.

At the phone hacking trial at London's Old Bailey, prosecutor Andrew Edis QC read out the texts which appeared to be the ex-Prime Minister offering the former Sun editor advice about her forthcoming appearance in Parliament.

The pair were in almost daily contact, the texts show, and the pair signed off texts to each other with an kiss.

The text exchange started on July 10 with Blair saying: "Hi its Tony. I've just landed. Is it too late to speak or should we stick with tomorrow?"

Brooks replied: "Let's stick with tomorrow" adding later "Can't wait xx".

They then went on to make arrangements for the call. Blair told Brooks he is in the Middle East, saying: "I'm really sorry about it all. Call me if you need to. Tx"

Earlier in the trial, the jury heard how Mr Blair offered in the phone call to be an unofficial adviser telling Brooks: "It will pass. Tough up."

A day later, the pair were texting again, with Blair asking Brooks to 'Call my hotel landing. Ask for room 610'.

The following day, July 12, another text came through to Brooks from Blair. 'I'm in the MidEast. Call me if you need to. Tx'.

On July 15, Brooks resigned as chief executive of News International. She received a text from Blair which said: "I'm really sorry about it all. Call me if you need to. Tx".

Then on July 16, Blair texted: "If you're still going to Parliament you should call me. I have experience of these things! Tx"

Brooks replied: "Definitely. Depends on the police interview first. I have Stephen Parkinson here today. I have never met him but people say he is good."

Blair replied: "He's excellent."

On the day of her arrest, Brooks texted Blair: "With Stephen now. We are both saying hello. x"

At 7.34am on July 16, Brooks told Blair she had an interview with police the next day.

She texted: "Feeling properly terrified! The police are behaving so badly."

Blair replied: "Everyone panics in these situations".

He later added: "I'm no use on police stuff but call me after that because I may be of use on Commons."

The trial has previously heard that Blair advised Brooks to launch a "Hutton-style" inquiry into the News of the World's 'phone hacking' six days before her arrest.

In the email, Brooks said the former prime minister told her to "tough up" and "keep strong". Blair also allegedly advocated sleeping pills for "clear heads".

Earlier on Wednesday, Brooks described her husband's attempt to hide embarrassing property from police as "impulsive", "ill thought-out" and a "really, really stupid thing to do".

In her 13th day in the witness box at the Old Bailey, the former News International chief executive was asked about her reaction when husband Charlie told her what he had done.

Earlier in the trial, the court heard Mr Brooks had stashed bags containing an assortment of items including a porn magazine, lesbian porn DVDs and two laptops behind bins in the underground car park at their Chelsea Harbour flat just before police searched it while his wife was being interviewed by police on July 17 2011.

He went back to retrieve the bags and discovered they were gone, having been picked up when the bins were emptied, the court has heard.

The court was told the operation involved moving property from their Oxfordshire home, taking it to Wapping and then hiding it in bags behind the bins.

Brooks said she vaguely recalled him talking about his novel in the car as they returned from a visit to her solicitors after her interview with police.

But she said at the time she was feeling sick and just wanted to get home to bed.

The jury was shown CCTV footage of them returning, and Mr Brooks going off apparently to look for the property and returning empty-handed.

Brooks said her husband stayed quiet then because "he was just trying to deal with it and not tell me until he had to".

She thought it was pretty stupid because of the "embarrassment factor", adding that he was "absolutely obsessive" about his novel. But she understood his motives even though it was unnecessary, she said.

Recalling their conversation later, she said: "He told me he had asked security to look after his belongings. "I thought it was an impulsive ill thought-out decision. I thought it was a really, really stupid thing to do."

Asked why "impulsive", she said: "I am maybe referring more to the personal stuff. I think it's evident he did not want police to find his stuff."

"You did not want police to get your stuff," Andrew Edis QC asked.

"That's not true. The police had all my stuff," she said.

Brooks, 45, and her 51-year-old husband, of Churchills, Oxfordshire, deny conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

She also denies conspiring to hack phones and conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office.

Thanks malena,

Earlier on Wednesday, Brooks described her husband's attempt to hide embarrassing property from police as "impulsive", "ill thought-out" and a "really, really stupid thing to do".

See how she puts the blame on him??? He was stupid to try to hide it in the Garage, he could have had a bonfire in the Garden for the Paperwork and taken the Computers and DVDs to the nearest river.

I don't think she can wriggle out of this, writing cheques to the Police ....if she does it's yet another example of one Law for the rich and another for the poor.

While it shouldn't make any difference to the actual facts of the case, she has many supporters of her, alleged 'good character'. We've seen this form of defence work well in the recent trial of another 'celebrity,' this was in a historic abuse case. No names no pack drill as to which 'sreet' this particular defendant lives on.

It remains to be seen whether the real facts of telephone hacking will prevail or this cold, hard nosed professional woman who is attempting to obfuscate the issue by pulling the jurors heart strings with her 'Infertility Clinic' stories will smoke and mirror the real truth by using an alleged good character.

Since there are Police Officers involved who Rebekah wrote cheques for , would they not be charged as well???

I hope justice prevails and she gets a Prison sentence, if it is Trial by Jury , I think she will.

I would like to think so too, Panda. The trouble is our much vaunted justice system, once used by the world as the 'Gold Standard' of judicial fairness is now looking to have reverted to being a two tier Georgian old boys society.

That goes without saying, Panda... Any criticism of the Royals must warrant a jail sentence.....

You are right Panda, Diana was no angel, but the entire problem with Charles' and Diana's marriage was he only wanted Camilla from day one. In my opinion he should have been man enough to stand on his own feet and abdicate his position as heir to the throne, as his great uncle did when abdicating to marry Mrs Simpson.

Diana was 18yrs young when she and Charles became an item, plenty of child bearing years ahead, Camilla was in her 40's . What did Diana say. 'there are 3 of us in this marriage. I think the marriage failed not so much because of Camilla, but Diana became very popular and sort of out shone Charles which he did not like. Apparently she was bulimic and when they split Diana used to confide in William, he was only younng.

Exactly, she was a marriage of convenience. once there were a couple of heirs to the throne she had done her job.

Phone hacking at NoW 'carried out on industrial scale'
Clive Goodman
Clive Goodman was made royal editor of the News of the World in 2000
Phone hacking at the News of the World was carried out on "an industrial scale", the Old Bailey has heard.

Former royal editor Clive Goodman told the court the newsroom was so competitive that one senior journalist hacked editor Andy Coulson's phone.

Mr Goodman denies conspiring to commit misconduct in public office.

Mr Coulson, who is one of a further six on trial, denies conspiracy to hack phones and conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office.

Prince Harry's homework
A micro-cassette with a recorded message from Prince William to Kate Middleton was found at Mr Goodman's flat, the court was told.

The former royal editor, who was convicted of phone hacking in 2006, said it had been recorded by NoW private investigator Glenn Mulcaire.

Mr Goodman told the court the message was of the prince arranging to leave the military training academy Sandhurst to meet his then girlfriend.

Another story he got from a recorded message was about Prince Harry and his homework, the court heard.

During his third day in the witness box, Mr Goodman, 56, said he had made a private deal with Mr Mulcaire to pay him £500 a week for information obtained from hacking the phones of people close to the princes.

"I would be able to access information about meetings, events, events happening in the lives of the Prince of Wales's sons, who were then up and coming and making their way in the world," he said.

Mr Goodman said he had given Mr Mulcaire the names of the princes' personal assistant, private secretary and also the Prince of Wales's head of press.

http://news.sky.com/story/1227963/hacking-trial-hears-williams-message-to-kate

Former News Of The World editor Andy Coulson approved a two-month project to "monitor" the phones of three royal aides, says the paper's ex-royal editor.

Clive Goodman told the hacking trial he made a personal deal with private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, separate from the newspaper's contract.

The Old Bailey was also told a phone message from Prince William to his then-girlfriend Kate Middleton was intercepted by Mulcaire, while he was working for the paper.

The message, found on a micro-cassette in Goodman's flat, was allegedly of William arranging to leave Sandhurst military academy to meet her.

Former royal editor of News Of The World Clive Goodman
Former NOTW royal editor Clive Goodman
In it, the royal said: "Hopefully I should be able to leave by seven at the latest" and later he repeated: "Planning on definitely coming out by sevenish so I will be with you by eight at the latest."

Under "Project Alexander", Coulson allegedly agreed to extra payments of £500 a week to Mulcaire for hacking the phones of people close to princes William and Harry.

Goodman said he gave the private investigator the names of the princes' personal assistant, private secretary and also the Prince of Wales' head of press.

Goodman went on to claim phone hacking was going on at the NotW "on a pretty industrial scale" and "it got to the level" when Coulson's phone was being hacked.

Asked for what purpose, he said it was to find out what other stories were in the pipeline in the competitive newsroom.

Goodman said The Sun's then-editor Rebekah Brooks' phone was also hacked "for the same reason - to find out what the Sun was up to".

Goodman told the court how he got a story about Prince Harry asking his private secretary for help with his homework at Sandhurst from the employee's voicemail.

In it, the prince allegedly asks for information about the Iranian Embassy siege, saying: "Please, please, please, email it to me or text me and I will try to ring you again later."

Andy Coulson
Andy Coulson denies the charges
The court heard about other stories on the young royals which Goodman said came from hacking.

They included a story about William getting lost in woods during a night exercise and getting shot at with blanks, much to his embarrassment.

Harry's phone was also hacked to listen to a jokey message from his brother putting on a woman's voice, the court heard.

Goodman's project with Mulcaire was only due to last a couple of months from October 2005 but went on ad hoc until the time of their arrests in August 2006, he said.

Goodman admitted phone hacking and was sentenced in 2007. He denies conspiring to commit misconduct in a public office.

Mulcaire was imprisoned for six months in 2007 after pleaded guilty to hacking.

Seven defendants, including Brooks and Coulson, deny all the charges against them. The case continues.
