Tense relationship between English and Portuguese

There are two separate investigations into the disappearance of Madeleine


After the pressure from the English police, it's now the McCann couple's turn to criticise the investigation work of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) as well as the cooperation between the British and the Portuguese authorities.

As CM had already reported, the relationship between the English police and the PJ started becoming tense when the Scotland Yard sent a third rogatory letter, at a time when the diligences from the second judiciary assistance request have not been carried out yet. CM knows that many of the diligences, including questioning, searches and the analysis of bank accounts, may not be authorised by the Public Ministry prosecutor.

The English police, that opened an investigation which is financed by the parents of Madeleine, who disappeared in the Algarve in May of 2007, asserts it already has the names of three suspects.

On the other hand, the PJ in Oporto, which leads the investigation that was reopened in Portugal, follows a line that is different from the one that the parents of the missing English child would like the most.

According to the English press, the McCann couple says that it is "frustrating" to see that the cooperation between both police forces is "not existing as it should". And they pressure for a joint investigation to be carried out.

Stupid title to this article, geared to annoy the Portuguese and what an error - hopefully one in translation and the PT paper here does not actually state that McCanns are funding Sy search!

Can you believe the arrogance of this couple???? They were no help to the Portugese when Madeleine was missing. employed Metodo 3 in direct defiance to the Police who said a secondary investigation was illegal.


Not only that, the Home Office refused to authorise 6 months supply of McCann Bank Statements saying it was too intrusive, yet we know the McCanns used the fund like their own piggy bank, as the Daily Mail pointed out in the 1st year Accounts, only 13% of Fund money was used to search for Madeleine .

Iris, I don't think it was Astro Correio da Manhã wrote the article if you look , Astro merely copied it.

I am friends with Astro and if she translated something it would be right. The original item is obviously at fault.

I have just read about the suspect in the 1982 Hyde Park blast who will not be prosecuted because he was able to produce documents proving assurance that he would not face trial. I know this is because of the Northern Ireland peace process, but I'm feeling outrage that this sort of thing could happen in the U.K. and makes me feel, what with the political assisstance the McCanns have received, this sort of blunder could mean that Madeleine will never have justice. It is tormenting to think that those responsible for her disappearance could benefit further from some sort of political "help".

I don't think I have known such corruption in Government, Tony Blair was bad enough but Cameron is proving a will o the wisp when it comes to ethics. He will not win the next Election, but who, among all the Politicians can make changes? I still havn't figured out WHY the McCanns got so much support.
We know that Gerry phoned Tony Blair within an hour of Madeleine found missing and helped the McCanns immeasurably, but why has Cameron carried on helping them?

The Met can scream 'up hill and down dale' 'the McCanns and their friends are totally innocent and are not suspects or persons of interest. We have sent them all (accidentally) a letter saying 'you will never be prosecuted, ever, by the Met or any UK Police force.'

However, it's NOT the Met's 'investigation' is it?

It's those damned 'pesky' Portuguese/PJ's 'investigation'!

But why would they excuse McC's from prosecution - A as we know it's not their case to prosecute but B isn't that reserved for people who are in some special circumstance - like they are involved and they rat someone else out, so in return for telling what they know, they receive immunity?

I think that probably happens everywhere but they can't provide immunity to people on behalf of PJ so that's a bit silly. And really if McCs are innocent why should they get immunity? Or need it? They should be willing to tell what they know. Any agreement of immunity seems to carry with it a taint of "I was involved in the wrong doing" - you don't give it to victims.

You would not think that in the midst of their grief, the McCanns made time to meet the Press in PDL, set up a Fund, appoint Directors, arrange the purchase of Merchandise, meet the Pope, etc yet not aid the Portugese Police by attending a recon.
