Nigella Lawson 'attacked by husband' at restaurant
Nigella Lawson was apparently assaulted by her husband Charles Saatchi during a row at a restaurant during which he grabbed her by the throat.

In photographs published in a Sunday newspaper, the television chef appears to have become embroiled in a violent dispute with the wealthy art dealer.
The couple were sitting outside Scott’s in Mayfair, central London, when he appeared to lean over and grab her by the throat.
Lawson, 53, looked terrified before leaving the restaurant alone in floods of tears.
A witness told the People: “It was utterly shocking to watch.
"I have no doubt she was scared. It was horrific, really. She was very tearful and was constantly dabbing her eyes. Nigella was very, very upset. She had a real look of fear on her face.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said no complaint was believed to have been made about the incident and that no investigation had been launched.
The row occurred shortly after the couple had finished eating at the seafood restaurant, a popular haunt for celebrities.
They were at their favourite table, which is outside because Saatchi smokes.

It is partly sheltered by olive trees but the alleged attack could be clearly seen and heard by other customers and those passing on the busy street, it was reported.
Onlookers claimed Lawson dabbed her eyes on a napkin as her husband tapped his cigarettes on the table.
She is then said to have downed her glass of red wine before beginning to speak in a trembling voice, placing a hand on his left wrist on the table.
At one point, she leaned over and kissed his cheek.
Saatchi then left, leaving his wife, who was wearing a spotty top, black jacket and trousers, sobbing at the table as he got into a waiting car.
A couple on an adjacent table reportedly turned around and gasped as they saw Lawson become distraught but nobody intervened, despite the apparent severity of the attack.
The witness added: “He looked guilty. It was clear he knew he'd done something wrong. He was menacing, there's no question. She had been abused and humiliated in public.
“No man should do that to a woman. She raised her voice and got angry but at the same time was trying to calm him down, almost like you would try to calm down a child. The kiss was a strange thing. He was being intimidating, threatening.
"And yet she kissed him. She appeared to be a woman who loves him but was clearly unable to stop him being abusive, frightening and disrespectful to her.”
Earlier in the day, last Sunday, Lawson had tweeted a picture of her scrambled egg and smoked salmon breakfast.
She has since tweeted several times about food but there has been no hint of trouble in her marriage.
She has previously admitted that she and Saatchi have fiery rows and has described her husband as "an exploder".
She said in 2007: "I'll go quiet when he explodes, and then I am a nest of horrible festeringness."
The couple, who have both been married before, are due to celebrate their 10th anniversary in September.

Nigella Lawson: yes, it can happen to her
Images of Charles Saatchi apparently throttling Nigella Lawson challenge our clichéd ideas about domestic violence, says Anna Maxted

Nigella Lawson, handsome, clever, rich, who seems to unite some of the best blessings of existence, isn’t the sort of woman we expect to get hit by her husband. And yet, here we are, gawking at photographs which apparently show Charles Saatchi with his hands around our heroine’s throat, and her obvious, chilling terror.
How fortunate for him that it took place in a posh restaurant, where everyone was too polite to intervene. One can’t help but wonder, if this is the public face, what he might dare do in the privacy of their luxury home.
It’s curious, isn’t it, that we’re so surprised that domestic violence can apparently affect a woman like her. Our shock gets to the shameful nub of it: that really, we don’t believe cultured, middle-class men are violent to their partners, or that successful, confident, fabulous women suffer it. Surely, domestic violence is the grubby problem of the inarticulate and poorly educated, who can’t eloquently express their frustration, who are not self-aware or emotionally intelligent enough to thrash out their differences via a civilised heart-to-heart, rather than simply with a thrashing. We suspect that the typical victim is a meek mouse of a woman who somehow brought those cigarette burns upon herself by being irritating.
“I’ve met a lot of women who’ve survived domestic violence,” says Polly Neate, chief executive of Women’s Aid. “All different types of people, from all walks of life, and I’ve never met a little mousey, victim-type woman.”
What we struggle to get into our heads is that anyone can be a victim, regardless of race, religion, age, lifestyle, or how many times they’ve appeared, looking beautiful and accomplished, on television. A quarter of women have suffered domestic violence, and being an extrovert, boasting a brilliant career or a degree from Oxbridge is, outrageously, no immunity. “It’s a gradual thing, abuse,” a police officer friend told me once. “It’s a mental thing first. You’re brainwashed.” So, when this police officer friend’s boyfriend began to throttle and beat her, she thought to herself: “I’ve obviously done something to annoy him.”

So class or status is irrelevant, but we persist in our naivety. It’s a defence mechanism, of course; we’re desperate to find a cast-iron reason that will distance us from the miserable fate suffered by someone unnervingly similar to our comfortable little selves – because we don’t want to believe that it could happen to us. We cannot tolerate the thought that we are not safe. And from this weaselly position of “I’d never get myself into that situation”, it’s a short, shameful step to blaming the victim: why does she stay with him? Why does she put up with it?
Hence the reflex instinct of society to presume that a victim is exaggerating. We grimly cling to our rose-coloured view, wilfully disregarding the truth that our blindness makes us guilty of cowardly neglect. Of course, it is difficult to acknowledge the truth, because then we are obliged to take the inconvenient, awkward, possibly frightening step of doing something about it. Often, we can’t face doing that. So instead, we focus on scrambling out of this sticky, tangled cobweb of complicity. As Ms Neate says: “We don’t think: the person who we ought to be questioning and challenging here is the abuser, the perpetrator.”
We supposedly “decent types” find the act of cruelty, if not the instinct, hard to comprehend, so we search for a sensible cause to explain it away. Or at least to explain it. Is it a man’s inadequacy, his feelings of failure, frustration, stress, anger at the world, which he viciously takes out on someone physically weaker than himself, who in some way, perhaps by their mental and moral superiority, inspires their envy and resentment and bile? Tricky, because Charles Saatchi doesn’t quite fit this profile.
Instead of stretching our little brains trying to work out “why Charles Saatchi?”, perhaps we should be asking, “why not Charles Saatchi?”.
“Before I started this job,” says Ms Neate, “I’d be more inclined to think domestic violence was [perpetrated] more by sad, weak men. But now… I think it can be all kinds of people, and the only common factor I can latch on to is the cultural backdrop.
“My opinion is that all men can be influenced by a wider culture which objectifies women, trivialises them. If you are inclined to be abusive, you don’t have to look that far in popular culture to find some sort of justification of that. We might not have as many mother-in-law jokes, but we’ve got a lot more naked and provocatively posed women up and down the street.”
The truth is, if you are inclined towards abuse or violence you don’t need a reason, because you create a reason. It’s not the other person’s fault. It’s yours. Years ago, late at night, on a train, I was physically intimidated by a couple of older men. I ignored them until one lunged at me, growling like an Alsatian. All the potential heroes in the carriage hid behind their newspapers or looked away. In those brief moments of fright, I realised how helpless I was, how pitifully unequal in strength, and that provocation isn’t necessary. My only error was being there to pick on. I got off the train. It’s not quite as easy to leave a relationship.
Perhaps the sight of Nigella Lawson, frozen in fear, as her husband apparently chokes her, will end the curiously pervasive myth that domestic violence is just a teeny bit linked to the victim’s behaviour – that a woman can be so irritating or pathetic that she, as the saying goes, deserves a slap. It could be time to stop critiquing the abused, and focus on the perpetrator. Domestic violence is about exerting control, inspiring fear, and the insidious progression of that. As Ms Neate says: “The early warning signs of control are not necessarily physical, and can build up quite gradually – controlling someone’s phone, or how often they see their family or go out.”
The problem is, we don’t want to comprehend another’s capacity for evil. Our mind naturally twists away from the unpalatable truth. This is possibly why many early warning signs of abuse are interpreted in a romantic, rosy way by society: the adorable idea of the man who loves “his woman” so much he can’t bear to be without her for a second. He’s jealous, possessive, passionate (euphemism of the day) only because he cares.
Even the experts struggle. One pair of psychoanalysts, trying to establish quite why someone would beat to a pulp a person they supposedly love, in a paper entitled Theoretical Basis for Family Violence, wrote: “People who allow the abuse have often experienced painful shock or trauma in the past and will align themselves with abusers who enable them to
re-experience the pain of the original trauma.”
What a curious notion: that a victim gives an abuser permission. But we do, like dogs returning to a filthy old bone, keep gnawing at the delicious idea that the victim is somehow culpable. After all, Nigella has spoken of her mother’s cruelty towards her as a child, and the idea that someone who was mentally abused by a parent has latent insecurities is hardly surprising. As Ms Neate says: “The experience of abuse dramatically impacts on a person’s self-esteem and ability to protect themselves. It impairs their understanding of what they deserve and what behaviour they should expect in relationships, and that can make them vulnerable to further abusive relationships.”
And yet, we must take care, for again, we teeter perilously close to the suggestion that some women seek out abuse. One glance at those photographs of Nigella, with her lover’s hands around her throat, and I think we can safely consign that theory to the dustbin of denial. No victim lets it happen – but perhaps we do.

Nigella Lawson: Saatchi Cautioned For Assault

The art collector voluntarily walks into a central London police station after being pictured with a hand around his wife's neck.

Charles Saatchi initially dismissed the row as a 'playful tiff'

    ;

Advertising guru Charles Saatchi has been cautioned by police for assaulting his wife Nigella Lawson at a restaurant.
The 70-year-old voluntarily attended a central London police station and accepted the caution after photographs emerged showing his hand around Lawson's neck.
The pair were pictured having an argument on the terrace of a restaurant on June 9.
Lawson, 53, the daughter of former chancellor Lord Lawson, was reportedly seen weeping following the episode outside Scott's in Mayfair, central London.
Speaking to the London Evening Standard on Monday, Saatchi said: "About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children, and I held Nigella’s neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasise my point.
"There was no grip, it was a playful tiff.
"The pictures are horrific but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place.
"Nigella’s tears were because we both hate arguing, not because she had been hurt.
"We had made up by the time we were home. The paparazzi were congregated outside our house after the story broke yesterday morning, so I told Nigella to take the kids off till the dust settled."

Lawson's spokesperson has said that there would not be any comment on Saatchi's explanation but did confirm that she "isn't at the family home".

Police confirmed that they had not received a complaint of assault from Lawson or anyone else.

Charles Saatchi sounds like a rather controlling person to me. He is quoted as saying that he told Nigella to take the children away until the dust settled. He told her! That says controlling to me. He didn't suggest or encourage, he told her!

I was a volunteer for Women's Aid for 11 years. So many women stay with men because they want to believe it's a one-off or that the man will change. They don't change. Nigella needs to get out of there.

Well said Claudia!
Exactly Claudia!
These men are clever, and will 'catch' a woman when she is vulnerable.
I had watched a verbally, emotionally, financially and physically abusive relationship all my life (Mum and Dad), and suffered myself as I would try to stop it Nigella Lawson "attacked by husband" at Restaurant 389741
My sister ended up in an abusive relationship at 16 and at 36 is still there. I, otoh, always said I would NEVER let a man treat me that way.
I had been happily single for 5 years then my Dad died suddenly last July. He had mellowed with age and we got on well so it was a shock as he was only 64.
Well this guy picked me off when I was confused, lonely, etc.
It started under the guise of 'helping', but then he became really controlling; writing me lists of what I had to do that day, if I was 10 minutes late he would freak. He told me I was useless and frivolous with money and started an 'accounts book', making me keep receipts for EVERYTHING I bought (and this was MY money, he didn't have any!)
I bought his daughters (who slagged me down to the ground) phone credit when they texted Daddy begging him for some (to this day they don't know it was me).
He would deny things he said, trying to make me think I was going insane.
When I didn't do much he would say he was 'proud of how much you've improved', when I did loads I got no praise, he'd just say I'd not done enough.
If I did things my way not his, I was a moron and a 'c**t', well that's bad enough but I woke up when the same words were directed at my eldest.
I woke up and got rid, the night he left he grabbed and bruised my wrist and I have no doubt that I would have become a physical as well as verbal punchbag. Nigella Lawson "attacked by husband" at Restaurant 839934
I have one gift though - a beautiful 7 week old son who will be brought up to respect women!

PLEASE, if you haven't already, get out Nigella! It will only get worse. Men like that have a wire loose sadly.
You are worth more than that!

I am so sorry to read what you have been through but so glad that you had the strength to get away from him! Congrats on your lovely new baby boy too! xx

Rainbow-fairy,

Emotional abuse, in my opinion, can be worse than physical abuse. When there is physical abuse, you can show people what he did to you: look at these bruises. However, when there is emotional abuse, what do you show, especially when some of these abusers are real charmers and those around think he is a good guy.

The worst case I ever saw when I was with Women's Aid was one of what looked like just physical abuse, though. We had a property for a refuge and it was ready for occupation. I got a call from Samaritans to meet a woman there. It was a hot summer's day and the woman had on a black polo neck sweater with the sleeves pulled over her hands. On my own with her I asked her to roll up the sleeves. She had wounds on her hands where her bloke had stabbed a bunch of keys right through her hands and there were injuries on almost every part of her body that was covered.

There was also serious emotional abuse. The woman was Jewish and her husband had threatened on many occasions that he would stick her head into the gas oven if she did not do things his way. He constantly told her that was what happened to "bad Jews." Couldn't get much worse, could it?

I accompanied that woman from Samaritans straight across the road to the solicitor who did pro bono work for us. The solicitor, usually a calm woman, was so incensed by what had happened to the woman, she banged her fist on the table, said "I'll get the bastard," and immediately started the process for an emergency "ouster and non-mol"

I opened the refuge and I'll never forget that woman as the first over the doorstep, a brave woman who finally had the courage to leave and make an independent life for herself and her children.

Hi rainbow-fairy,

Sorry to read you had such a rough time and hope you never go back to him . Such Men are just Bullys and don't deserve love and affection. I remember a couple in our local Pub, his Wife was very timid but he was a spiv Londoner who treated her like s*** and used to leave the Pub to go disco dancing until early hours of the Morning. Anyway, one morning she rebelled , we were hysterical when she told us. Apparently he had "ordered" her to get him Breakfast in Bed, she duly obliged and brought in the bedroom a tray with a raw egg, raw bacon, cold baked beans etc and threw it over him before running out of the house.LOL

He died a couple of years later and we went to see her to offer help and condolences . In the Lounge mantlepiece  was a blown up photo of him in a big frame and lighted candles in front of it, so for all his faults she loved him.

Panda, what is thought to be the definitive research on why women go back to/stay with violent men, was done by a husband and wife team, Russel and Rebecca Dobash, at Stirling University. They interviewed thousands of women going through the courts. The most common reason given for staying with violent men was that they loved them: they hated the violence, but loved the men and just get hoping the men would change or that they could do something that would help that change. So many caring women and so many men who did not deserve them.

rainbow-fairy, I'm sorry to hear your story but glad you got out when you did. Stay strong, especially for your new little fella, congratulations xx

ETA The thing that worry's me with Nigella is this abuse happened a week before the papers published the photos so she must have stayed with him for the following week. It appears she only left after the uproar caused by the pictures appearing in pubic. I really hope she doesn't go back and it opened her eyes to make her realise she doesn't need to put up with that.

From the article:

His jokes on abuse & wonder

CHARLES Saatchi makes light of wife-beating in his book Be The Worst You Can Be.

The art collector also revels in being hateful in the book, below left, which has a subtitle of Life’s Too Long For Patience & Virtue.

It was published last year and is a series of tongue-in-cheek answers to “questions from journalists and readers” — though it seems most of the questions were made up.

In one, he is asked: “Did you know that the phrase ‘rule of thumb’ came from a law once used in England which forbade you from beating your wife with anything wider than your thumb?”

Saatchi answers: “No I didn’t. Why are you telling me this? Is it simply because I live in England, or have you heard that I am a ferocious wife-beater?”

Saatchi’s main philosophy in the book is it’s a “mistake” to be nice or caring. He writes: “Unlock yourself from the neurotic need to please. It erodes the soul.”

Saatchi also takes swipes at females. He says: “It’s ok for little girls to whine. They are practising to be women.”

And talking about his two divorces, he writes: “Wives make excellent housekeepers.

“They always manage to keep the house. Boom boom!”

Saatchi — who has wed three times — is not kind about marriage. He says: “It’s a flawed ideology, with a miserable track record, and only gives comfort to the insecure and needy, like me.”

So far Saatchi has refused to say sorry publicly for assaulting telly cook Nigella.

He writes in the book: “There is absolutely no shame in an apology made with your fingers crossed behind your back. It’s actually quite elevating.”

He sounds like a nasty piece of work to me.
