Madeleine McCann: British police seal off section of land at Portugese resort before digging begins
Jun 02, 2014 07:49 By Martin Fricker, Richard Hartley-Parkinson
A forensic archaeologist, sniffer dogs and ground-penetrating radar are all set to be used in the operation in Praia da Luz

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/madeleine-mccann-british-police-seal-3635125

A large section of land was sealed off in the early hours of this morning as part of the search for Madeleine McCann.

British police arrived last night and have met their Portuguese counterparts to finalise details of a search that is set to begin this morning.

They are expected to spend two days at the first site where police activity was spotted today.

Then detectives will scour another two areas close to where Madeleine vanished in May 2007, raising fears for parents Kate and Gerry that evidence will be found that their daughter is dead.

It is understood a forensic archaeologist, sniffer dogs and ground-penetrating radar will be used in the operation in Praia da Luz.

Diggers from nearby Lagos will arrive at the sites later this week.

The main targets of the searches are a fenced-off, vacant building lot, wasteland on a hill overlooking the resort's beach and another site outside the resort.

Portuguese police will not take part in the new searches, though a senior officer will oversee the operation.

The Scotland Yard team also hopes to interview eight Portuguese nationals, though it is not clear if they are regarded as suspects or witnesses.

Former GP Kate, 46, and heart specialist Gerry, 45, from Rothley, Leics, are staying away from the resort while ground operations go ahead.

A source said: "This is a critical time in the British investigation and could provide the big breakthrough in the case.

"Obviously there is the chance her body could be found.

"That is a nightmare scenario for her family, but it would also bring closure.

"They understandably have to remain positive and assume Madeleine is alive, but the dig raises the possibility of finding evidence that she is not."

Oh dear, those pesky untrustworthy sniffer dogs are being used....

What about that then Dr Gerry?

Interesting reading on forensic archeology here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forensic_archaeology

Article wrote:Forensic archaeologists are field archaeologists employing a high degree of skill, knowledge and experience in field craft and technological methods to help locate, recover and interpret buried objects/evidence. The technological methods employed include geophysical prospecting, aerial photography, satellite imagery, surveying and excavation.

i really hope that they find something that will lead to poor madeleine getting a propper buriel , that is why i joined forums way back in 2oo7 wanting to know what happened to the poor baby , and although if they find her it will be sad , but at least she can be laid to rest , all this should be about a poor baby that went on holiday never to return , lets all hope that she can be found , or at least find some clues to what has happened to her , i really hope that sy and the pj are working side by side , to what could be a very sad day . the truth is all that matters now

I agree Cass. Spare a thought too for the officers who will be involved in the dig. It will not be a pleasant task and if the do find Madeleine, it will stay with them forever. Not an easy job for anybody to carry out.

Having explored all other possibilities however incredible, the investigation has now gone full circle and arrived back in PdL. They aren't necessarily looking for a body, more likely looking for a piece of evidence, possibly as small as a fragment of something, which helps establish a picture of what happened and/or who was involved. Just my opinion.

Not sure how finding a body will fit in with the events of the hire car many weeks later.
GA was adamant the car was used to move the body.
Surely they would not have buried the body so close to the resort.
I thin they may be looking for other items of assistance to the events.
The bag etc....

Maybe they're looking for a pink blanket.
IIRC Lindy Chamberlain was finally cleared when a yellow matinée coat turned up years later.
It can just as easily work in reverse.

whatever happens during these digs i think that someone must have given up some information months before , this isnt done on a whim , there is a reason , and lets face it it is the start of a holiday season , they wouldnt do this just to end the case and put portugal in the spotlight again , i think something has been found before now to reopen the case or someone has come forward , they have something

Search warrants suggest hard evidence, which in turn suggests someone in the know.

All the things stated re. The blanket and rag doll etc wouldn't be buried on their own....

IF she is there then it means she has been put there to find.

Madeleine certainly wasn't put there AFTER the alert.

Wonder if there was lots off growth there before it was flattened.

Perhaps SY were alerted to Kate Mccanns visits off her walking around PDL after dark.

I'm not inclined to believe this is being done on a whim, Portugal would not allow that and at a crucial tourism time.

I go back always to the pink blanket. The blanket photographed in the apartment that night could have been Amelie's. It would be usual to have a small blanket like that for a child of her age on holiday, even if it were not her comforter. It is handy to cover her in a buggy in the evening.

We know Madeleine had a favourite one because Kate told us. I believe it was most likely her comforter and not cuddle cat which was used as a prop and perhaps something Amelie brought with her. She was photographed cuddling him to her chin, the ways kids do with toys they love.

I don't know where the rag doll went, maybe it is at home with all of the other birthday presents. She only made a very brief appearance.

The area they've sealed off is the size of 3 football pitches, yet they're only expecting to be searching there for a couple of days? That suggests they know more or less where to look and where not to bother looking. Plus, I doubt they've deployed helicopters, forensic archaeologists, radar equipment etc. to locate a blanket or a doll? I would have thought those types of resources are used to locate larger items, buried deep.
