Let's help other missing children too
Having unearthed no new clues in the hunt for Madeleine McCann, the Met Police have called off the search of scrubland in Praia de Luz, though their investigations will continue. It had been costing an estimated £40,000 a day.
The cost of the investigation, including all the UK forces, Portuguese squads, Interpol and the McCanns’ efforts, is believed to exceed £24 million.
While I have every sympathy for the McCanns and huge admiration for their seven-year campaign to find their daughter, does there not come a time when taxpayers’ money should be equally spent on the hundreds of other children still missing. More than 100,000 British children vanish each year. Most are found but more than 300 are still lost.
Kate and Gerry have become magnificent figureheads supporting charities that help find lost little ones — but I can’t help feeling those hundreds of children are being short-changed by the police’s understandable attention on Maddie.
