Madeleine McCann cops 'ignored tip-off that her body was dumped in lake'

Nov 24, 2014 23:41
By David Collins

AN EMPLOYEE of the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz found note in the doorway of apartment 5A, where Madeleine vanished, on the first anniversary of her disappearance.

Police received a tip-off that Maddie's body had been dumped in Barragem da Bravura reservoir, nine miles away from where she was last seen.

A LETTER handed to Portuguese police claimed to know Madeleine McCann’s final resting place, it has emerged.

An employee of the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz found the note in the doorway of the flat where the three-year-old was last seen.

It was spotted in May 2008, on the first anniversary of her disappearance, and claims she was dumped in the Barragem da Bravura reservoir, nine miles away.

Surrounding woods were searched for the missing girl but it’s understood the lake has never been trawled. The handyman said the letter was headed “Madeleine Beth McCann”.

He said: “It was written in Portuguese. Beneath it was a location for what it claimed was her final resting place.

“It would be the perfect place to hide a body.”

Kate and Gerry McCann’s spokesman said they would welcome any new searches.

A family friend said: “They would hope it has been acted on before but if there is new information it will surely be in police hands.” Scotland Yard refused to comment.

In October 2007, five months after Madeleine disappeared, officers searched the woods.

But reports at the time say police spent just two hours at the site and were not thought to have used underwater search teams.

One witness said: “I never saw any divers trawl the lake.”

Kate, 46, and Glasgow-born Gerry, 45, of Leicestershire, were at a tapas bar when Madeleine vanished. Police believe seven new possible suspects may hold vital information.

Y'all beat me to it..... the dam was searched, a bag of kitten bones and a child's sock were found IIRC.
Wasn't it the Mad Madeiran lawyer who funded it though?

Still missing: Madeleine McCann
By Aislinn Simpson in Odiaxere5:23PM BST 14 Oct 2007
A vast reservoir near to the town where Madeleine McCann went missing is set to be trawled as police relaunch an active search for her.
Full coverage of the Madeleine McCann investigation
The new inquiry head has now tripled the size of his team in a bid to crack the case and ordered fresh searches of a 10 mile area around the holiday town of Praia da Luz from where she disappeared five months ago.

A search is also expected of the dense woodland and isolated dwellings around the reservoir - known locally as Barragem da Bravura, literally the Reservoir of the Wilderness - which leading detective Paulo Rebelo believes was not combed carefully enough in the days following the four-year-old's disappearance.

According to Portuguese newspaper the Correio Da Manha, the "meticulous" Rebelo has ordered his reinforced team to pay "special attention" to the area around the jagged reservoir, which has a 25 mile perimeter, and is 15 miles from Luz.

Sites to the south of the Ocean Club where the McCanns and their friends stayed, including Luz and Burgau beaches, are also to be "fine combed" by inspectors, who will particularly focus on spots where the British group used their mobile telephones.
These are the first significant searches for three months. Detectives have already revisited the family's rented apartment and the tapas bar where they dined on May 3, the night Madeleine disappeared, and this weekend began a review of the case files, looking for loose ends.

A friend of Kate and Gerry McCann said: "Any widening of the search area is encouraging and we would welcome that. It does sound as though there is more vigour in that aspect of the inquiry which is good."
He added that while it would be a "tragedy" for the family if police searches eventually yield the little girl's body, at least it would help lift the cloud of suspicion from them.
"If she is dead then she is dead but not by their hand," he said.
Another friend dismissed a report this weekend about suspicious footprints in the McCanns' apartment and the car they hired 25 days after Madeleine went missing as being like "something out of an Agatha Christie novel".
"It doesn't imply guilt in any shape or form," she said. "There are a lot of perfectly good reasons why a footprint of that nature might be found."
Newspapers cited a report on results due back from the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham this week that detailed a footprint in the apartment which had specks of unidentified blood in it, linking this to a potentially matching footprint above the bumper of the McCanns' car.
But an FSS source said: "The simple fact is, as was the case before, the results are not conclusive."
Meanwhile, it emerged that Kate and Gerry McCann, both 39-year-old doctors from Rothley in Leicestershire, could be the only official suspects in their daughter's disappearance within a month.
According to British expatriate Robert Murat's lawyer, Francisco Pagarete: "It's possible that in the next four weeks his status will be cleared because we will have reached six months since he has been a suspect in this case."
He said the District Attorney could still step in to increase the time limit detectives have to decide about their suspects, but added: "If they consider that the situation with regards to my client his already been resolved then his status will be lifted and he can get on with his life. It's just a question of waiting."

A few "ifs" here. If the lake is dragged. If a body is found. If the body is deemed to be that of a nearly 4 year old child, all it will prove is that she is dead. It won't prove that there had been an abduction, nor will it prove that K & G had anything to do with it ( more's the pity).

It says in the Snail, that the note was found near the doorway to the apartment ONE YEAR AFTER SHE VANISHED! Where has the note been in that time, was it just written. Given that it was alledgedly rain soaked, wouldn't the ink have run?

As they did with GA?

Ball-point ink probably wouldn't run, neither would pencil

In February 2008, a team of divers hired by Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia searched the Barragem do Arada reservoir, which is 35 miles east of Praia da Luz.

The human rights lawyer claimed that underworld criminals told him Madeleine was dumped in a nearby lake that was “deserted with lots of trees and a beach area” - however the search came to nothing.

Seems to be the same reservoir as the one searched back in 2008 at the instigation of Marcos Aragao Correia.... where they found kitten bones and a sock, or whatever.

If they just found a note with no name and nobody came forward as writing it, it would not have made any sense to follow an anonymous lead.

According to phone pings, Russell travelled in the direction of Barragen da Bravura on his 68 km trip to Aljezur, when supposedly the group did not have access to a car:

After this return to the antennae of Luz, only at 14:07:44 on 7th does one observe a record outside that locality. That record occurs on the antenna installed in the [parish] of Aljezur, municipal area of Aljezur, district of Faro. The records return to the antennae of Luz at 14:24:00. Curiously, on this day only Russell and Matthew activate other antennae outside Luz. The first activates the antenna referred to before, while the second activates "Budens 1". If on the one hand the movement of Matthew to Budens is acceptable, then the trip of Russell to Aljezur in these first days so soon after the disappearance is somewhat strange, it not being that, once more to the picture of Fiona Payne on 12 July, there exists an error in the data that the operator Optimus remitted to the Police. There is an hypothesis of him having made that journey, there being sufficient time for him to cover the distance that separates Luz from Aljezur (68 km.) at an average [speed] of 130 km/h. Despite there being no other records from the mobile phones of the other members of the group outside the antennae of Luz, there exist gaps in the times [of the records] that make it possible for one of them to have accompanied him. Therefore, accepting that Russell was effectively in the coverage area of that antenna, then on this date the members of the group would already have had access to a motor vehicle.

But the new article does not say Barragem do Arada (35 km away), but Barragem da Bravura (9 miles away). Pretty sure this is a different dam. The distances are not even close, 35 km vs 14 km. This, however, could be the same tip off that the McCann lawyer received, but he chose to dredge the wrong dam. Both are supposedly surrounded by heavily wooded areas.

Yes,this is why I originally thought they couldn't be the same dam. I wish someone could clarify for us.
