Father Shoots Dead Four-Year-Old Daughter
10:27pm UK, Tuesday December 29, 2009

Alex Watts, Sky News Online

A four-year-old girl has been shot dead and her mother critically injured during a violent argument at a house in Hampshire.

The girl's 56-year-old father - named locally as Andrew Copland - was also found dead inside the property in Church Hill, Aldershot.

It is understood he shot the pair before turning the gun on himself.

Detective inspector Darren Rawlings said police were treating the shooting as a "domestic incident" and said the couple had separated four weeks ago.

The woman - named as Julie Harrison, 40 - dropped her daughter Maisie off at her former home and police were called after neighbours heard a heated row.

Despite emergency first aid, the young girl died at the scene.

Her mother was taken to a London hospital by the Surrey Air Ambulance and remains in a "serious and critical" condition.

Officers said they had recovered a firearm from the property, and all the injuries were consistent with gunshot wounds.

DI Rawlings said: "This is a tragic death of a four-year-old child. What police are working towards is to establish the identity of those involved.

"We also need to find out why this has happened and exactly what happened in the premises this morning."

He added: "At this stage the evidence would suggest it was a domestic incident.

"The person in the house has discharged a firearm. We are not seeking anyone else at the moment."

A large cordon was placed around the end-of-terrace house just off the main high street into the town.

Officers also shut off access to Aldershot Manor Park, which is opposite the property.

Scenes of crime officers were seen entering the house and a small tent was put up on the pavement in front.

A young woman left two small bouquets of flowers at the scene but did not talk to reporters.

Why does this crime seem to be increasingly on the up? What a selfish b@stard this man was! Why is it the women so often seem to survive these attacks too?
The poor children always suffer....

Why do Father's feel the need to do this??

Rest in peace little one x

The mother has also died today:

A woman has died after being shot in the head in a violent row in which her former partner and their daughter both died.

It is believed Andy Copland shot four-year-old Maisie and his ex-partner Julie Harrison before turning the gun on himself in Aldershot, Hampshire.

Ms Harrison, 40, died in St George's Hospital, London, just after 0930 GMT, Hampshire police said.

Police were called to the shooting on Tuesday at the home in Church Hill.

Post-mortem examinations of the bodies of Mr Copland and Maisie are being carried out.

'Sadly missed'

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary added that formal identification of all the people involved in the shooting was also expected later.

It is believed the shootings took place as Maisie was dropped off for an access visit.

Police believe Copland shot his daughter and ex-partner before killing himself.

Bouquets of flowers have been left at the house where officers are standing guard and the area around the house remains cordoned off.

Liz Mathias, head teacher of St Michael's Infants in Aldershot, where Maisie was a pupil, paid tribute to the little girl.

She said: "We were devastated to hear about the tragic incident involving Maisie. She was a lovely little girl and a daughter that anyone could be proud of.

"Although she had not been at our school for very long, Maisie was an involved member of the our school community and she will be sadly missed."

'Appeared angry'

Det Insp Darren Rawlings, of Hampshire police, said officers had been met with a "very traumatic" scene.

Officers attempted to resuscitate Maisie but she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Ms Harrison was airlifted to hospital in a "critical condition".

Det Insp Rawlings said the couple had split up about four weeks ago and investigators were not looking for anyone else.

Neighbour Rachael Bryan, who recently moved into the street, said Mr Copland had appeared "angry and depressed".

She said: "I used to see him putting the bins out but I kept my distance.

"People said he used to be okay but his wife had left him."

Police recovered a firearm from the property and a red people-carrier vehicle used by Ms Harrison was removed from the scene.

I can never understand why they would want to kill their own child, surely your first instinct is to protect the little ones you love. How twisted would you need to be to use that as revenge on a former partner. Poor little girl, I hope she rests peacefully now.
