Strange isn't it how people are so quick to call the Portuguese police bungling. Anyone would think that all criminal cases in UK were solved, but that of course is far far from the truth, there are many many unsolved cases in UK. Makes you wonder why the press don't write stories about them all.

I think calling the entire law enforcement and or judicial system in a country "bungling" sets you up. I can't see McCanns being this foolish although they almost went there, on the whole "fluffy useless words" interview about the government.

Still saying the government is useless is pretty ubiquitous and in its way harmless because that could mean anyone. Saying that Scotland yard or a particular police force is bungling, corrupt etc I think would be going beyond the pale for people who want their help?

The PJ is to be painted with a bad brush, that's strategic. Because of their findings, the investigation has to be bad and the case- their case- reinvestigated. If the UK does investigate and finds similarly, then I think the individual police force that did the investigation would be attacked but I can hardly see how this would happen in the present circumstance. The best they could do is to say that they got it wrong and becaues of that no search for madeleine is being "proactively" taken.

Knowing that, I wonder how much good it would do, if the search were reopened - if you as LE investigator know the chief suspects will refuse to cooperate and because you can't get answers, you will have to shelve the case for lack of evidence - - would you want to do it? You'll be at the same place as far as justice being served for madeleine - it won't be - and you'll also have a black eye, and spend a lot of money to get it.

I think we all know the end game of TM.

Unless the police doing the investigation are open to being highlighted as worthless and doing a bad job, the only way you'd take it on - one would think - was if you either are willing to go around any top -down mandate to find McCanns innocent -if they do have backers high up - and make those high officials look really bad by finding them guilty - a possible career killer - or, to go along with that mandate if one exists or that "editorial direction" let's say, if it's not quite a mandate - -and do a fake investigation, ignore your instincts and findings - clear them, and then be told you now need to spend a lot of money looking for a child you believe with 99% certainty was dead May 3rd, or else you'll be "useless" too.

It's a problem.

Bungling British police for a change? 306321

All police forces make mistakes, the problem is some make more than others.

Let us hope this family can now have some closure.

Such a tragic story.

I too wish for closure for the family. A fair investigation with findings that are not hampered by witnesses' refusal to cooperate. Or by political justifications that outweigh the purpose of the investigation: to find out what happened to Madeleine McCann May 3rd and before - if that is necessary - and bring the appropriate people to justice for whatever crimes have been committed.
