Rob Cole, Sky News Online

Simon Cowell is putting together a charity single for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

A galaxy of stars are expected to step forward and lend their support - and their voices - to the project.

The X Factor supremo said he had received a call from Prime Minister Gordon Brown asking him to put a Band Aid-style record together.

Speaking at the National Television Awards, he said: "We made the decision today. We had a request from the Prime Minister and The Sun newspaper, would we put a record together, so we haven't got a lot of time but we are going to do something, and attempt to raise as much money as possible."

X Factor co-star Cheryl Cole said she had agreed to take part.

Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Robbie Wiliams and Wyclef Jean are also among the stars being lined up, according to The Sun, while the Cowell stable of talent, featuring the likes of Britain's Got Talent runner-up Susan Boyle, could also feature.

The paper also reported that Cowell, 50, had played a key role in negotiating a deal with Mr Brown for the VAT to be waived on all sales of the track.

A host of showbiz stars are already being mobilised to make money for Haiti's victims.

U2, Jay-Z and producer Swizz Beatz recorded a song together last week.

And a Hope For Haiti telethon will be screened across the globe Friday and Saturday.

U2's The Edge, singer Bono, Jay-Z and Rihanna are due to perform on the show.

Haiti Aid Song 'To Be REM's Everybody Hurts'
Jo Couzens, Sky News Online

Simon Cowell's charity single to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti will be a cover of REM's Everybody Hurts, according to Sky News sources.
The X Factor TV talent show supremo also revealed Leona Lewis and Michael Buble are the latest stars to agree to take part in the aid campaign.

Another X Factor judge, Cheryl Cole, has already confirmed she will lend her vocals to the song.

Cowell said he received a call from Prime Minister Gordon Brown asking him to put a Band Aid-style single together.

Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Robbie Wiliams and Wyclef Jean have been rumoured to be among the host of showbiz stars expected to contribute.

The Cowell stable of talent, featuring the likes of Britain's Got Talent runner-up Susan Boyle, could also feature.

Leona Lewis is on board

Mr Brown said he believes the single will make a "huge" amount of money for the rescue efforts.

"I have already talked to Simon Cowell and I said there would be an exemption from VAT for a charity single," he said.

"The agony and anguish for the people that we are seeing on our television screens is something that British people want to respond to.

"Simon Cowell can make a huge amount of money to help the people of Haiti."

Madonna and Beyonce will also be performing special concerts to raise money for relief efforts.

Other participants in MTV's Hope For Haiti Now global benefit will include former US president Bill Clinton and Hollywood stars Ben Stiller, Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry and Julia Roberts.

I like this song too, it always reminds me of when Princess Diana died. In the days following her death our local radio station played this song about twice an hour. Weird how songs remind you of events isnt it.
