Missing Samiul Azim

Police recovered the body of a six-year-old boy yesterday two days after he went missing from the capital's Adabar area.

Sources said the body was found stuffed in a sack left on road-9 of Adabar.

The boy, Samiul Azim, was a nursery student of Greenwoods Kindergarten at Mohammadpur and son of a textile chemical supplier AR Azam.

Samiul lived in a flat on the fourth floor of a six-storey building on road-8 of Adabar.

Amir Hossain who lives nearby said two street children first saw the body and screamed in fear.

Locals rushed to the spot on hearing the screams.

The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Morgue sources said the boy was strangled to death.

Azam, the father of the boy, said he filed a general diary with Adabar police station after Samiul went missing on Tuesday and gave an advertisement in the newspaper in the "Missing" column yesterday.

Shahanara, maidservant of the house, said like other days she took Samiul downstairs on Tuesday but after sunset he did not return home.

Jamal Uddin, a security guard of the building where the boy lived, said he identified Samiul soon after he saw the body.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Adabar police station Zakir Hossain Mollah said police were investigating the matter.

Humaira, the mother of the boy, said Shamsuzzaman alias Arif, their former neighbour, is the mastermind behind this killing, the OC said.

Azam told The Daily Star he suspects both Arif and his wife Sathi for this killing.

He said his wife Humaira gave Tk 10 lakh to Arif at different times, which he did not know.

The two quarreled over realizing the money, Azam added.

“The security guard of the building told me that Arif used to come to our flat often whenever I was out on my business,” Azam said.

Arif last came to our flat on June 19, he added.

Humaira and Arif are known to each other over the last three years.

Humaira first met Arif through his wife Sathi who works in a local beauty parlour.

Mother arrested for son's murder

The police on Thursday evening arrested Ayesha Humaira, mother of the six-year old whose body was recovered in the morning from Adabar.

The victim's father K M Azim filed a case against his wife Ayesha Humaira and her lover Shamsuzzaman Arif with the Adabar Police Station at noon.

Samiul Azim, a nursery student, was the only son of KM Azim and stayed at house 7 of road 8 in Nabodai Housing.

Adabar Police Station's sub-inspector Sobiruddin Shikder said the body was found at around 9:30am, some 200 yards off Samiul's house.

His body was stuffed head-first in a sack with the legs sticking out.

Shikder told bdnews24.com that Samiul had gone missing on Tuesday afternoon from in front of the house.

His father, Azim, filed a complaint with the police station.

The policeman said that Samiul's face was bloodstained. The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Although the police suspect that Samiul's death might be connected to his mother's alleged extramarital affair with one 'Arif', neither his mother Ayesha Humaira nor his father gave any such indications.

Instead, Humaira alleged that they had problems with a tenant family in the apartment where they had resided earlier.

They were having problems with Shamsuzzaman and his wife Shathi and the couple might be responsible for Samiul's murder, she suspected.

Azim reaffirmed her suspicion by saying that he had lent Tk 1 million to the couple and that he also suspected them.

Adabar police took the parents in for questioning around 2:30pm.

Following the interrogation, the police became confident that the murder occurred over the extramarital relation. They are looking for the mother's lover, Shamsuzzaman Arif.

Adabar police station sub-inspector Azharul Islam told bdnews24.com in the evening that the man, whom Ayesa had cleverly taken into the house on the night of June 19 claiming that he was a CD-player repairman, was actually Shamsuzzaman Arif.

"Arif and his wife Shathi were neighbours of Azim and his wife Ayesha before they shifted to Adabar. The two families were on good terms. Arif even borrowed Tk 1 million from Azim. He, however, did not pay back the amount."

Islam said that Arif and Ayesha were having an extramarital relation behind the back of their spouses. However, the relation between the two men was worsening over the debt.

During the questioning Ayesha confessed that she and Arif had sex in her bedroom on the night of June 19.

She had sent Arif off to the roof when Azim returned home around 11pm. Azim retired to his room after dinner and Ayesha called Arif into her room.

Arif again went to the roof at dawn and returned after Azim left for the day. They went back to Ayesha's room after breakfast and continued their tryst through the day.

Ayesha also revealed that both she and Arif suspected that her son Samiul might have witnessed the whole incident.

"But I never thought Arif would kill Samiul over this," Ayesha told the police.
