Man charged over death of Indian boy

A housemate of toddler Gurshan Singh placed the boy unconscious in the boot of his car and drove him around for at least three hours before dumping him in a field north of Melbourne, police allege.

Gursewak Dhillon, 23, faced an out-of-sessions court hearing before a bail justice at the St Kilda Road police complex charged with manslaughter by criminal negligence.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles of the homicide squad said Dhillon lived at the same address in David Street, Lalor as three-year-old Gurshan, his parents and six others.

Det Iddles said Dhillon "placed the child in the boot of his car unconscious but still alive".

"He then drove up to at least three hours with the child in the boot of the car, eventually stopping at Oaklands Junction, where he placed the child from the boot into the grass and did not check to see if the child was alive, then returned to 28 David Street, Lalor," Det Iddles said.

Dhillon was arrested at a friend's house in Mill Park, in Melbourne's north, at 10am (AEDT) on Sunday.

Det Iddles gave no evidence about how the little boy came to be unconscious.

Dhillon appeared before the hearing dressed in a white polo shirt, black tracksuit pants and brown thongs and appeared calm throughout the hearing, referring to the dead boy at one stage as "the kid ... the kid that died" when asked who lived with him at the David Street address.

Det Iddles said police opposed bail because Dhillon had few ties to Australia and was under investigation by immigration officials over allegations his passport may be false.

Dhillon, a part-time taxi driver who just bought a small truck and was due to start full-time work with a courier company on Wednesday, lives in Lalor with his wife.

He has a daughter in his native India.

Dhillon applied for bail, offering to leave his passport and driver's licence with police and initially telling the bail justice he could stay at the Mill Park house where he was arrested.

But Det Iddles said police had spoken with the man's friend and were told that "because of the events that transpired today he (Dhillon) is no longer welcome there".

Dhillon then gave the phone number of another friend, a man with whom he plays cricket and who lives in nearby Epping.

He said his friend would be happy to take him in as long as the media was kept away from the man's house.

First bail justice Ben Czerniewicz, then homicide squad Detective Inspector Steve Clark tried the number, but found it to be out of service.

Mr Czerniewicz then remanded Dhillon in custody amid concerns that he posed an unacceptable flight risk and could also tamper with witnesses in the case.

Dhillon is due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Gurshan vanished from the Lalor house while his mother was in the shower and his father was at a nearby library on Thursday.

His body was found by a council worker about 7pm that day in long grass at the intersection of St Johns and Wildwood roads, Oaklands Junction, behind Melbourne Airport.

The boy's parents were interviewed by police and viewed his body on Saturday.
Both were expected to return home to Kotkapura in Punjab but cancelled their plane tickets after their son's death.

So, he's from the same house and charged with manslaughter by criminal negligence presumably because they are able to prove that the child was in the boot of the man's car and that he dumped him at the side of the road, but they still don't know what exactly happened.

THE LITTLE BOY WAS SCREAMING AND CRYING BECAUSE HE WANTED TO GO TO THE LIBRARY WITH HIS FATHER, THE SCREAMING STOPPED ABRUPTLY.

SO, WAS HE SLAPPED TO SHUT HIM UP AND HE BECAME UNCONCIOUS BECAUSE OFF THIS, HE WAS ALIVE WHEN HE WAS DUMPED OR RATHER PUT DOWN 30KM AWAY, THE POOR THING COULD OFF BEEN SAVED, DAMN IT.

THIS IS WHAT PANIC DOES TO YOU.

Statistics again proven. I still wonder how long the mothers shower was that she didn't notice the son and her lodger missing? surely that was suspicious that the son goes missing and at the same time so does another resident of her house. Did she suggest to the police the coincidence or did she refuse to believe someone in her house could have been involved.
I find it tragic that now whenever a child goes missing the publics first thoughts are the family did it regardless of the situation the child was in when it happened.
I am glad that the boy was found and he can be given the dignified burial he deserves and i hope that justice will be done.
My condolences to the innocent family members and my curses on those involved
