The dead child found near a lake in a mountainous area of Spain has been identified as the missing five-year-old German boy, a government official confirmed in Berlin on Saturday.

The boy’s father had travelled to the Cordoba region from Dortmund to identify his son, whose body will now be examined in a post-mortem to find out how he died.

Local media reports suggest there is no sign of violence, and that it is expected that the boy, who has not been named, died of dehydration, heat exhaustion or a fall.

The boy’s 40-year-old mother notified Spanish police that he was missing on Thursday, having shown up at a petrol station in a distressed condition, acutely dehydrated and covered in scratches and bruises.

She told police she had left home in Herdecke, North Rhine-Westphalia, to drive to Spain about a week previously, but was unable to say what had happened with her son.

Police found two rucksacks – one large, one small – and several empty bottles of water near the boy’s body and are working on the theory that they suffered some kind of accident while hiking and that she left the child to go get help.

No records have been found of the pair having stayed in local hotels, and detectives believe they had been sleeping in their car, which was found on Tuesday near a religious shrine.

They had been seen on a fishing trip on Sunday, and had then asked for help on the Monday because the car had broken down.

The woman will remain in hospital until at least Monday.

Police in Spain have found the body of a five-year-old German boy in a reservoir.

The boy, who was apparently on holiday with his mother, went missing last Tuesday.

Police say the woman, who is in a city hospital, reported the disappearance of the child when she was found in a distraught state at a petrol station on Tuesday.

Although police released pictures of both the mother and child on Thursday, they did not formally name either, and identified her only as 'Tanja K'.

The boy's father and other relatives had flown from Germany to join in the search.

The case is sure to revive memories of Madeleine McCann who disappeared three years ago, while on holiday with her parents and twin siblings in the Algarve region of Portugal.

Nach dem Tod eines fünfjährigen deutschen Jungen während eines Urlaubs in Spanien ist die Mutter vorübergehend festgenommen und verhört worden. Die 40-jährige Frau liege noch im Krankenhaus in Espiel und werde polizeilich überwacht, berichtete die spanische Zeitung "El Dia de Cordoba" (Internetausgabe) am Sonntag.

Ihr werde fahrlässige Tötung vorgeworfen. Gerichtsmediziner stellten inzwischen fest, dass das Kind aufgrund starker Hitze an Dehydration und Organversagen gestorben war. Das Auswärtige Amt konnte sich auf ddp-Anfrage zunächst nicht zu dem Bericht äußern.

Der Fünfjährige aus Herdecke in Nordrhein-Westfalen war am Freitag tot in in einem bergigen und schwer zugänglichen Gebiet in der Region Cordoba gefunden worden. Laut "El Día de Córdoba" identifizierte der aus Dortmund angereiste Vater in Spanien den Leichnam seines Sohnes. Das Auswärtige Amt in Berlin bestätigte die Identität des Jungen am Samstag. Das Kind war vorher drei Tage lang vermisst und gesucht worden.

Die Mutter war am Dienstag in Espiel aufgetaucht. Sie machte laut Polizei bei der Vermisstenmeldung einen verwirrten Eindruck und konnte keine Angaben dazu machen, was ihr oder ihrem Sohn zugestoßen war. Sie sagte den Angaben zufolge nur aus, sie habe sich verlaufen und ihren Sohn verloren. Die 40-Jährige soll unter akutem Wassermangel gelitten haben.

Dead German boy's mother charged with negligence in Spain

A court in Spain has charged the mother of a five-year-old German boy who died from heat exposure last week after he was abandoned under mysterious circumstances with criminal negligence, police said Sunday.

The woman was questioned and charged on Saturday after an autopsy determined that the boy died from multiple organ failure caused by the heat or from severe dehydration.

His body was found at the Puente Nuevo reservoir near the city of Espiel in southwestern Spain on Friday surrounded by empty water bottles and two rucksacks, three days after the woman reported his dissappearance.

She was found in a distraught state at a petrol station, disoriented and bearing bruises and scratches, suffering from dehydration.

She told police she had left their home in Herdecke in Germany by car with her son about a week ago but was unable to say what happened later.

One of the hypotheses on which the police are working is that the mother and child suffered some sort of accident while hiking in the mountains and she left the boy behind while she went to seek help.

Temperatures in the region have soared to around 40 degrees Celsius (more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit) in recent days.

The woman, who Spanish media report is mentally unstable, remains at the Reina Sofia hospital in Cordoba, southern Spain.

The boy's father arrived in Spain on Friday from Germany to identify the remains of his son. He had separated from the boy's mother several months ago.

Oh dear! I think the Belfast Telegraph should have waited a little while longer before jumping on this particular missing child bandwagon.

Why oh why must the Mccanns be mentioned in every tragic child story? Could it possibly be because they want everyone to see the mother of this poor little boy has been charged with negligence ? !
