Florida Girl 'Snatched' From Home

Haleigh Cummings

Police believe Haleigh Cummings was kidnapped

11:52am UK, Thursday February 12, 2009
A kidnap investigation has been launched after a five-year-old girl was snatched from her home in Florida.

Haleigh Cummings was reported missing in the early hours of Tuesday morning - she was being looked after by the 17-year-old girlfriend of her father, Ronald.

Misty Croslin, who was also looking after Haleigh's little brother, called police at around 3am after waking up and discovering the child was gone.

"There's no longer any reason to believe that the child simply wandered outside," said Mayor Gary Bowling of the county sheriff's office in Putnam.

She's a five-year-old child, and she's afraid of the dark... we feel really desperate that 24 hours have passed now and we don't have a clue where this child is.

Florida police spokesman

The police have said they must "assume abduction".

"All the answers to why you'd want to take a five-year-old are ugly," Mayor Bowling added.

Police said they have no official suspects, but were treating everyone being interviewed as a potential suspect.

The blonde-haired, brown-eyed little girl was last seen wearing a pink T-shirt and underwear.

"She's a five-year-old child, and she's afraid of the dark," Mayor Bowling said.

"We feel good about what we're doing, but we feel really desperate that 24 hours have passed now and we don't have a clue where this child is," he said.

SATSUMA, Florida (CNN) -- The father of a missing 5-year-old Florida girl made a renewed plea Thursday for the return of his daughter.

The search continued Thursday for Haleigh Cummings, 5, who went missing from her home near Orlando.

1 of 3 "If you have my daughter and you're watching this, drop her off somewhere safe," Roland Cummings said of his daughter Haleigh.

"I'm not out for revenge, I'm not out for nothing else. I want my daughter back," Cummings said, with his girlfriend, Misty Croslin, at his side.

He said he could think of no reason Haleigh would be taken.

"Why would anybody be sick enough" to abduct a child? he asked.

Cummings, 25, said earlier that he and Croslin had passed lie detector tests.

Croslin, 17, was the last person to see Haleigh when she put the girl to bed Monday night in their Satsuma, Florida, home. She said she awoke in the middle of the night to find Haleigh gone and the back door to the double-wide trailer propped open with a brick.

Putnam County authorities on Thursday continued working with the FBI and state investigators to search a five-mile area for Haleigh.

Police have no official suspects, but say they are treating everyone they interview as one.

Don't Miss
WFTS: 44 sex offenders live near Haleigh
WJXT: Read what was said during 911 call
WFTV: Watch Haleigh's father make a tearful plea
"All the world's a suspect" now, a sheriff's spokesman has said.

Cummings said earlier that he was surprised when he arrived home from work at 3 a.m. Tuesday to see his girlfriend awake, and he asked her why she was up.

"She said, 'Your back door's open and your daughter's gone,' " Cummings told Nancy Grace on her show on CNN's sister network HLN on Wednesday night. Watch Cummings describe his shock »

Croslin waited until Cummings came home to phone 911 about the girl's disappearance, though it's unclear how long that wait was. Watch the father describe what happened »

Police said Wednesday that Croslin had tucked the girl and her 4-year-old brother into bed at 8 p.m. before going to sleep at 10.

Croslin told police she woke up around 3 a.m. to use the bathroom and returned to find the girl missing. The boy was still in bed, Cummings told CNN.

A brick was propping the trailer's door open, Croslin told a 911 dispatcher. Hear the frantic 911 call »

The father said he has used the back door only two times since he's been living in the trailer.

Police say they believe the girl was abducted.

"There's no longer any reason to believe that the child simply wandered outside," Maj. Gary Bowling of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

The police must "assume abduction," he said, adding, "All the answers to why you'd want to take a 5-year-old are ugly."

Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, shook as she spoke Thursday near the search area. Sheffield's mother, Marie Griffis, said that she and her daughter are devastated. "It's like I've got a hole in my body, and she feels helpless because she can't do anything but sit here."

A nationwide Amber Alert says the girl was last seen wearing a pink shirt and underwear.

Croslin is staying with relatives as the investigation continues, said Bowling, describing the girlfriend as a "child herself."

Griffis said that her daughter and Ronald Cummings had a "rocky relationship" and that the two took turns spending weekends with their daughter. Watch mother's tearful plea »

It's unclear if Sheffield and Cummings were ever married, but they are "legally separated," police said Thursday. Authorities were unable to answer media questions about how and why Cummings had custody of Haleigh.

Sheffield lives near the Florida-Georgia line and has been interviewed by law enforcement, according to police.

Investigators are looking into various angles of the case, including finding out the location of 44 registered sexual offenders who live within a five-mile radius of the Cummings home, said Lt. Johnny Greenwood of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Police are offering but not requiring all those interviewed in the case to take polygraph tests.

A familiar face from the Caylee Anthony case is involved in the search. Bounty hunter Leonard Padilla joined the hunt Tuesday and is offering a $25,000 reward for the girl's return.

Padilla initially bonded out Caylee's mother, Casey, who has been charged with first-degree murder in the toddler's death, and then helped launch one of several searches for Caylee.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Putnam County Sheriff's Office at 386-329-0800 or the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse at 888-FL-MISSING.

Haleigh Cummings Mjk

The following transcript is Geraldo's confrontation with Ronald Cummings, father of missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings. In the confrontation, Geraldo asks him about allegations he'd abused Haleigh, her biological mother and drug use.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RONALD CUMMINGS, HALEIGH'S FATHER: This is uncalled for.

RIVERA, HOST "GERALDO AT LARGE": Chad and Marcus told me that during the vigil, you told them you were 75 percent sure who took Haleigh.

CUMMINGS: There is no way — I do not know who took Haleigh. If I had — if I had, uh, five percent of where Haleigh was at, I would be there now and not here.

RIVERA: Did you tell them that, though? Maybe you weren’t — maybe you were just [OVERLAP] were just — are they lying?

CUMMINGS: Yes, they’re absolutely lying. No, for no reason have I ever told anybody that I have any clue where my child is at. If I had any clue where my child — you know, national TV, they’re a bunch of liars. Chad and whoever told you this are a bunch of liars. I never even spoke with them.

RIVERA: They told — they told me that you hit Haleigh. Is that true?

CUMMINGS: No. Never, ever have I ever hit my child. Me and my child have an agreement. Daddy, daughter. She has been spanked on her behind the way DCF says that you can take care of disciplining your children.

RIVERA: You never backhanded her to the face?

CUMMINGS: [OVERLAP] Never. Never have I ever backhanded my child in the face, ever.

RIVERA: Did you hit Crystal when she was pregnant?

CUMMINGS: No. I did not. Never.

RIVERA: You didn’t hit her in the back of the head and kick her?

CUMMINGS: No. No. I never have.

RIVERA: You swear to God you never hit your pregnant woman?

CUMMINGS: [OVERLAP] Never. Never, never have I ever hit any woman, period. Never. And I’d like to know where all these allegations are coming from because I would like to talk — talk to law enforcement and have these false allegations, um, known that, um, the false allegations against me, somebody needs criminal charges pressed against them.

RIVERA: What about the allegations of cocaine use, methamphetamine use?

CUMMINGS: There’s nothing. I do not do drugs.

RIVERA: You don’t do drugs? All those arrests were all —

CUMMINGS: No.

RIVERA: Do you work for the police? Are you an informant?

CUMMINGS: No, I am no an informant. I do not work for the police. I work for PDM, which is a, um, bridge building company. That’s who I work for.

RIVERA: And you’ve never been involved in the drug trade?

CUMMINGS: No.

RIVERA: And when they tell me they saw bricks of marijuana that you had in the house, plants all around the house, is that a lie?

CUMMINGS: It is absolutely a lie and I would like to know where the information is coming from so that I can get, um, the proper authorities to take care of this.

RIVERA: You’re — put all this stuff aside. If some associate of yours, some associate that had something to do with drugs and this is not about drugs but if these people are on the dark side of life, don’t you think that you should share that information? Share — tell us about — when you told Marcus and Chad that you were 75 percent sure and you had your gun ready and your — and you had your gun ready and you were gonna go get em, didn’t you say that? Isn’t that a fact, Ron?

CUMMINGS: No, it is not a fact.

RIVERA: Why would they make that up? Why would they make that up?

CUMMINGS: I don’t know why they would make [OVERLAP] for you. But I — I am fixing [OVERLAP] to have the law called right here, right now because you’re making up things or they’re making up things and you’re getting into —

RIVERA: I am — I am relating to you what they are saying.

CUMMINGS: [OVERLAP] My face, man.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You need to back off, man. That’s my son.

RIVERA: Alright. Well I’m sorry — I am sorry for what has happened.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, you’re not sorry. [OVERLAPPED CONVERSATION]

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You need to go.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We are — [OVERLAPPED CONVERSATION] Listen. You wanna come up here and make [OVERLAP] allegations. Why don’t you go back to —

RIVERA: These are not my allegations, man. These are not my allegations. You have to understand that.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: [OVERLAP] Okay. [OVERLAP] All we care about —

RIVERA: You have to understand this is not my allegation. Don’t touch him, don’t touch him, please. We’re leaving. Come on, let’s go. Let’s go.

CUMMINGS: [OVERLAP] I wanted you to see that all this is about is my daughter. I love you, baby. [OVERLAP] If you are out there, I want you to know that I love you and I will find you, baby. I love you. And two, whoever — whoever has you, please bring my daughter home to me. I love my daughter. I love you, baby. I will find you.

RIVERA: You believe she’s alive then?

CUMMINGS: I’m always gonna believe that my daughter’s alive until they find her. [SILENCE]

Missing Haleigh's Mom Opens Up to Geraldo

Haleigh Cummings Mother+Crystal+Sheffield,+left,+with+her+mother,

GERALDO RIVERA, HOST "GERALDO AT LARGE": When Ron Cummings is seen on television, most often, he is crying or in mourning or other conduct appropriate to a father whose daughter has gone missing. But the family on the mother’s side tells a much different story and a much different image emerges of Ron Cummings. Crystal, is not a fact that he was abusive to you?

CRYSTAL SHEFFIELD, HALEIGH'S MOM: Yes he was. He — when I first got pregnant with Haleigh, he punched me in the back of the head and before then, he was verbal. I mean he was just very abusive.

RIVERA: What did he call you?

SHEFFIELD: Stupid *EXPLETIVE DELETED*. You stupid *EXPLETIVE DELETED*. You *EXPLETIVE DELETED*. I mean you name it, he said it.

RIVERA: Describe when he punched you when you were pregnant.

SHEFFIELD: We were living in Leesburg at his mother’s house. And I had just found out I was pregnant. We were both doing cocaine and I stopped and I walked in the bedroom and he was doing it.

And I was like, you know, how are you gone do this in front of me after I just found out I was pregnant and I just stopped? And he got very pissed off and I had my — I was facing — I had my back turned to him. He punched me in the head and then I turned around and he kicked me off the bed.

RIVERA: And he knew you were pregnant when he kicked you?

SHEFFIELD: Yes he did. He knew.

RIVERA: And was he abusive, basically, throughout your relationship?

SHEFFIELD: The whole time. I mean his mother knew, his granny knew. His granny even told me once, um, I don’t know why you’re with him.

RIVERA: Why did you stay with him?

SHEFFIELD: Because I was scared to leave.

RIVERA: Are you frightened of him even today?

SHEFFIELD: Yes I am.

RIVERA: Why?

SHEFFIELD: Just because of all the things he’s done to me.

RIVERA: Are you fr— frightened that he’ll come after you?

SHEFFIELD: Sometimes I am. I mean he’s called and wanted me to come back several times and I have went back a couple times just to be with my kid and he was still the same and I left. It hurt to leave em but I’m not gonna put myself through that.

RIVERA: Do you believe his story about what happened?

SHEFFIELD: No, I don’t. I mean I know he loves Haleigh and — [PAUSES] — his temper, I mean it could get bad enough for him to hurt Haleigh. But I do know he loves Haleigh. Haleigh is his heart and everybody knows that.

RIVERA: Has he ever hit Haleigh?

SHEFFIELD: Um, my cousin, Candice, told me when we got down here for this incident, that, um, he come to her house — it was Ronald, Haleigh, Junior and Misty. And Haleigh bumped into him or smarted off to him and she said he just backhanded her. And she fell flat on her face on the porch.

RIVERA: Marie, you have a picture of Haleigh.

MARIE GRIFFIS, HALEIGH'S GRANDMA: Yes.

RIVERA: Do you want me to see it?

GRIFFIS: Yes. You get it.

RIVERA: Alright this is a picture, a disturbing picture, that shows Haleigh with an obvious black eye, a cut on her nose and the — a bruise that goes from the top of her left eye all the way down to the left side of her cheek.

Now I understand the school records indicate that she had an accident at school. Are these injuries the result of that accident?

GRIFFIS: Uh, that’s what we were told, that she fell at school and — or who was pushed at school by — by another child and that she fell catching the sidewalk and that was the results of it. But if you fall on the sidewalk, why didn’t her hands get skinned, her knees get skinned?

SHEFFIELD: [OVERLAP] The nurse said that all she had was a scratch on her nose.

RIVERA: So you — you — do you believe that Ron Cummings hit this child?

SHEFFIELD: I don’t know if he hit her or if she fell down or any other incident happened. But that did not happen at school. The nurse said she had a scratch on her nose.

RIVERA: And you have witnesses that he has hit this child?

SHEFFIELD: Yes.

GRIFFIS: Yes.

RIVERA: Do you believe that Ron Cummings knows who took Haleigh?

SHEFFIELD: Yes. I mean he’s told my brother and my fiancé that he knows — he’s 75 percent sure he knows where his daughter is. He said on TV that he had no enemies.

RIVERA: Is that true?

SHEFFIELD: No. He’s got plenty of enemies.

SHEFFIELD: I know when he’s really crying, that is fake.

Putnam County Clerk of Courts Tim Smith says Ronald Cummings, 24, and Misty Croslin applied for a marriage license Monday in Palatka. Because Croslin is only 17, she needed consent of both parents. The license is good until March 12th.

A segment of Nancy Grace's show addressing new items found in the search for Haleigh Cummings:

A particularly astute reader, "curiosityhasme", left the following comment on a previous entry about the disappearance of 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings from her North Florida home. I'm posting it merely as food for thought for others. I happen to agree with this person's conclusions, for the most part. It should be stressed, however, that this is pure opinion on the part of the anonymous commenter as well as me, your friendly neighborhood crime blogger:

Five tip-offs for this arm-chair sleuth:

1. Contradictory statements to begin with. Could be the girl WAS in the same bed to begin with and WET the bed. THEN was put in other bed. Misty talks about her wetting the bed (recently) and she "washed the blanket." If she is 5 year-old girl with Turner's syndrome, living in emotionally and physically abusive environment, further explains why still bedwetter.

2. Father hothead and has lengthy criminal history - also domestic violence, reports of child abuse. Known fact that one of the leading causes of death in children are parents who go berserk due to bedwetting, over-discipline and possibly beat to death. Could have physically assaulted, broken limbs, bruises - only recourse was to throw her in the river, and place cinder block at back door to "cover" himself. Also reports that phone calls between two in early morning hours before he returned home, so if truly missing, he wouldn't have stayed at job 'til finished.

3. His dismay and tears are over what he did, and yes, he wants her back - but not because of abduction that never happened He is remorseful, like many abusers who do it over and over and over. Think sheriff's dept going along with story to get the goods on Dad and girlfriend.

4. Misty going along with story, but because she is young and not real bright, (like Ronald) they have really given themselves away with talk of bedwetting and now knowledge of truancy - in kindergarten of all things - which is another sign of physical abuse and healing injuries.

5. Child missed so much school that bio Mom said if missed anymore, father could be arrested. Contempt of Court entered against father on Mon 2/9 -hours before child went missing. Father didn't want to lose son, lose job, nor go to jail.

Father murdered unintentionally, life in prison. Girlfriend accomplice - serving 30+ years in the big house.

Case closed.

SATSUMA, Fla. — One year has passed since a north Florida girl vanished from her home.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says detectives have investigated thousands of tips since Haleigh Cummings, then 5 years old, disappeared from her family's Satsuma trailer a year ago Wednesday.

The child's father, Ronald Cummings, has said he returned from work and couldn't find his daughter. His then-girlfriend, Misty Croslin, had been baby-sitting the child.

Investigators say evidence and information they've collected indicates a strong likelihood the child's disappearance is the result of foul play by someone known to Cummings or Croslin.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Northeast Crime Stoppers at 888-277-TIPS

I hope that someone will do the right thing and tell the police where they dumped her.
When i first heard of this case it instantly thought of Madeleine and the similarities, the alleged abduction etc.
Another poor innocent victim of people who were meant to love and protect her from harm

CNN April 14th

(CNN) -- Authorities say they are searching an area near Satsuma, Florida, as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings.

The Putnam County, Florida, Sheriff's Office said in a statement that it was conducting the search, based on a lead investigators received. Authorities did not release the exact location "in an attempt to prevent unnecessary congestion from onlookers," the statement said.

"Although various resources are being utilized to conduct this search, it is just one of many operations conducted during this investigation," authorities said. "Due to the sensitivity of this investigation, the name of the person providing the tip and the physical evidence alleged to be in this area will not be released."

Haleigh Cummings was 5 in February 2009 when she vanished from the mobile home she shared with her father, Ronald Cummings, and stepmother, Misty Croslin, near Satsuma.

Deputies from four counties and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement began searching the St. Johns River south of Satsuma on Tuesday morning, CNN affiliate WJXT-TV in Jacksonville reported.

The search lasted until about 8 p.m., and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials told the station nothing was found. The search will resume Wednesday, WJXT said.

In addition, Sheriff Jeff Hardy told WJXT that he met with Haleigh's family earlier Tuesday but would not divulge what was discussed.

"We're going to continue this investigation until we can bring it to a logical conclusion," he said.

In a statement, authorities said the purpose of the meeting was to update relatives on the status of the investigation and inform them of the search.

Jail records show that Misty Croslin, the last person to see Haleigh, was removed from the St. Johns County Jail, where she is being held on suspicion of drug trafficking, for a short time on Tuesday, WJXT reported. The sheriff told the station she was brought to Putnam County for an interview.

Haleigh was last seen on February 9, 2009. Cummings called police and reported Haleigh missing when he returned from work at dawn.

Croslin told police she tucked Haleigh and her 4-year-old brother into bed about 8 p.m. and went to sleep two hours later. She said she awoke at 3 a.m. to find Haleigh missing and a cinder block propping open a back door.

Putnam County authorities said in August that "the evidence and investigatory effort has minimized the likelihood that Haleigh's disappearance is the work of a stranger."

Police have said Cummings and Crystal Sheffield, the girl's mother, are not considered suspects.

Investigators have also said they believe Croslin "continues to hold important answers in the case" but has not provided "any sort of detailed accounting of the hours during the late evening and early morning of Haleigh's disappearance."

Authorities have said physical evidence contradicts Croslin's account of the events that night.

However, police have stopped short of naming Croslin a suspect in the case. In televised interviews, Croslin has said she does not know what happened to Haleigh but believes "the other side of the family" knows where she is.

Croslin and Cummings were both arrested in January along with three others after allegedly selling about $3,900 worth of drugs to undercover officers, authorities said. The two divorced following Haleigh's disappearance.

After their arrest, Putnam County sheriff's Lt. Johnny Greenwood said, "Even though these are totally separate, they are parallel cases, and there's no doubt in my mind these cases will cross some day. I hope that somewhere through this, the investigators in the Haleigh case will find the information they need."

Haleigh Cummings Empty Re: Haleigh Cummings

Post  milly Fri 28 Oct - 22:16

CNN April 16th

(CNN) -- Authorities now believe Haleigh Cummings is dead and are treating the 5-year-old's disappearance as a homicide investigation, the Putnam County, Florida, sheriff said Thursday.

"At this point, I'm comfortable in saying I'm calling it a homicide," Sheriff Jeff Hardy said. He added that investigators are looking at "one or more persons of interest" but would not identify any targets of the investigation.

The sheriff spoke with reporters as divers completed their search of the St. Johns River, south of Satsuma, Florida, where Haleigh lived in a mobile home with her father, Ronald Cummings, and his then-girlfriend, Misty Croslin.

Hardy said the searched was prompted by "leads" developed when people he would not identify began cooperating with investigators.

"People are starting to talk," he said. "We're hoping to make an arrest in this case," he said.

Holding up a photograph of Haleigh, the sheriff said: "We are trying to bring someone to justice for this little girl right here."

He later vowed: "I am not going to give up on this little girl and her family."

Croslin, who is in custody on unrelated drug charges, was spotted on Wednesday on a dock near a boat launch where the search was centered, according to a helicopter videographer with CNN affiliate WKMG-TV. The woman was handcuffed and spoke with investigators, who were pointing at the murky river.

Croslin was the last person to see Haleigh before she was reported missing on February 9, 2009.

"I think she's come to realize she's in trouble," Hardy said.

About 25 to 30 divers searched the river for three days, the sheriff said. The searched the river by hand, in zero visibility, Hardy added, describing the conditions as difficult.

"We found everything from alligator toenails to, you know, you name it," Hardy said.

The search of the river would "wrap up" at about 6 p.m. Thursday, the sheriff said. Divers have several items from the river, he said, but would not be more specific. He said the items would be sent to a lab for analysis.

Croslin told police she tucked Haleigh and the girl's 4-year-old brother into bed about 8 p.m. the previous night and went to sleep two hours later.

She said she awoke at 3 a.m. to find Haleigh missing and a cinder block propping open a back door. Ronald Cummings reported Haleigh missing when he returned from work at dawn.

An attorney representing Joe Overstreet, Croslin's cousin, said Florida officials questioned his client Tuesday.

Overstreet, who is from Nashville, Tennessee, was in the Satsuma area when Haleigh disappeared, said attorney Shawn Sirgo. Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents flew to Nashville on Tuesday to question him, Sirgo said.

Overstreet maintains he had nothing to do with Haleigh's disappearance, Sirgo said, adding that his client is "broken over this" and "knows he is being used by people whose story keeps changing."

Putnam County authorities said in August that "the evidence and investigatory effort has minimized the likelihood that Haleigh's disappearance is the work of a stranger." Police have said Cummings and Crystal Sheffield, the girl's mother, are not considered suspects.

Jail records show that Croslin was removed from the St. Johns County Jail, where she is being held on suspicion of drug trafficking, on Tuesday, CNN affiliate WJXT has reported. The sheriff told the station she was brought to Putnam County for a questioning.

Investigators have said they believe Croslin "continues to hold important answers in the case" but has not provided "any sort of detailed accounting of the hours during the late evening and early morning of Haleigh's disappearance." Authorities have previously said physical evidence contradicts Croslin's account of the events that night.

However, police have stopped short of naming Croslin as a suspect.

HLN's Natisha Lance and Jean Casarez contributed to this report.

Jacksonville.com

Misty's brother Tommy denies having spoken to his grandmother about the cousin Joe Ovestreet.

Hank "Tommy" Croslin Jr.'s attorney released a statement this morning saying that he did not confess anything about Haleigh Cummings' disappearance to his grandmother.

Croslin Jr. is the brother of Misty Croslin, who reported the 5-year-old missing Feb. 10, 2009. She had been dating and living with the girl's father, Ronald Cummings, who was at work when she said Haleigh disappeared from their Satsuma home.

Croslin Jr., who is in jail on unrelated drug charges with her sister and Cummings, submitted to a lie detector test this month and later met with representatives of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, State Attorney's Office and FBI.

His attorney said Croslin Jr. then took the investigators to the Shell Harbour Road boat ramp, which became the epicenter for three days of revived searching for Cummings this week.

Croslin's grandmother, Flora Hollars, said she was responsible for the revived search after calling investigators with new details the Croslins gave her.

Jim Werter, who represents Croslin Jr., said in a news release that Croslin Jr. "did not tell Flora Hollars anything about the investigation except to have his attorney contact and meet with him."

Did Misty Croslin Kill Haleigh Cummings?

The Fingerpointing May Only Just Be Beginning in the New Homicide Investigation

As the Haleigh Cummings case has moved from being a missing person case to being an active homicide investigation, authorities have begun focusing on persons of interest -- although they have yet to actually name anyone. Three days of intense searching in and along the St. Johns River just south of Satsuma, Fla., has resulted in little physical evidence but the Haleigh Cummings case has seen an increase in recent activity as several people who may have been involved in the disappearance seem to be breaking their silence and are turning on each other. Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy told reporters Thursday that they were "hoping to make an arrest."

And if Misty Croslin, Tommy Croslin, and Joe Overstreet keep talking, one, two, or all three of them will undoubtedly soon be arrested in connection to what Sheriff Hardy says he can feel "comfortable" calling a homicide. It has become apparent that investigators have received enough information to believe that 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings is dead. But are there any indications as to who may have killed her?

At present, most information that has been made available to the public has pointed in the direction of Joe Overstreet, Misty and Tommy Croslin's cousin. According to statements made by Flora Hollars, the three cousins' grandmother and source of the lead that had Putnam County authorites dragging the St. Johns River, Misty and Tommy both implicated Joe Overstreet in phone conversations. The grandmother also made a few damaging remarks about Joe Overstreet on "Nancy Grace" Thursday evening.

Flora Hollars told Nancy Grace that her grandson, Joe Overstreet, had been a changed man since returning from a trip to Florida, the same trip which placed him in Satsuma when Haleigh Cummings went missing. The grandmother noted that Overstreet's demeanor changed, that he refused to talk about Haleigh Cummings at all and would leave the room if conversation led to the little girl or even if someone walked into the room with a t-shirt on bearing the child's image. But mannerism peculiarities were as nothing compared to what Hollars told Nancy Grace that the other grandson, Tommy Croslin, told her from his jail cell.

Flora Hollars told "Nancy Grace": "He told me -- he was crying -- and he says, Nanny, 'I`ve got to break down. I`ve got to tell somebody.' And I told him, I says, 'Tommy, I know in my heart exactly what you`re fixing to say.' He says, 'Nanny, what do you mean?' I said, 'Are you going to tell me that Joe did this?' He says, 'Yes, Nanny, Joe did.'"

She gave no details or could give no information as to motivation, but the grandmother also divulged that she had talked with Misty Croslin Thursday morning. She, too, had implicated her cousin, Joe.

Flora Hollars: "He and Tommy -- she (Misty Croslin) said Joe Overstreet and Tommy wrapped the rope around Haleigh and carried her to the dock at the St. John`s River and put a block around the other end of the rope and throwed her in the river."

With everything seemingly pointed at Joe Overstreet, does this mean that he killed Haleigh Cummings? If not, then who else could have been involved?

When Tommy Croslin told his grandmother about the killing, he never mentioned an involvement on his own part. Misty Croslin claims that her brother and cousin disposed of the body but gave no details as to how the child died -- or if Haleigh Cummings may have been alive when they dropped her bond body into the St. Johns River.

Thus far, no one has yet pointed a finger at Misty Croslin, unless that information is being withheld from the public.

Still, Joe Overstreet seems to feel that he has become the fall guy. He was questioned by Florida Department of Law Enforcement authorities Tuesday but maintains that he had nothing to do with Haleigh Cummings' disappearance. His lawyer says the Joe Overstreet "knows he is being used by people whose story keeps changing."

And what about that ever-changing story? Misty Croslin has been the focus of the missing person investigation ever since Haleigh Cummings went missing in February 2009. The last person to see the child, Misty, who was babysitting both Haleigh and her younger brother, Ronald, has given authorities several conflicting stories about the missing girl. She has also failed four polygraph tests, according to Nancy Grace. Physical evidence also contradicts some of the information given in Croslin's accounts.

Could she and her brother, Tommy, be setting up cousin Joe?

Nancy Grace's chief editorial producer, Ellie Jostad, also presented information regarding a letter supposedly obtained by Leonard Padilla, the bounty hunter that attempted to help in the Caylee Anthony case when that 2-year-old child was believed to have been missing. Jostad said the letter, allegedly written by Misty Croslin to a family member, reveals that Misty Croslin, Tommy Croslin, and Joe Overstreet were all at the mobile home in Satsuma that night. The letter went on to say that all were intoxicated, but she wasn't sure what happened.

Rumors that cousin Joe Overstreet may have done something to and with Haleigh Cummings cropped up early in the investigation. Police spoke with him then and released him.

But police have zeroed in on Misty Croslin's involvement from the outset. They have said in the past that they believed Misty Croslin had information that she was not divulging. Given that this now appears to be true, how much credibility can be given her stories that she wasn't involved? Various accounts now put her in the position of having knowledge of Haleigh Cummings' death -- at least, after she was killed.

But could Misty Croslin have killed Haleigh Cummings? Certainly. She could have killed her and talked her cousin and brother into disposing of the body. She may have aided in the disposing of the child. She and her brother may have been the only parties involved and have brought cousin Joe into the scenario to take the murder or manslaughter rap. Or she may be the only one involved, having told her brother the story that he told his grandmother.

No matter where this case has turned in its 14-month history, it has always turned back to Misty Croslin.

Attorney: Ronald Cummings, Haleigh’s Family Told to Make Funeral Plans

Nancy Grace

Posted: 05:22 PM ET

Ronald Cummings’ attorney says investigators told the family to make funeral plans for Haleigh. This on the heels of an announcement by Putnam County’s sheriff that Haleigh is likely dead. Have investigators found her body? After a massive three-day search at the St. Johns River near Satsuma, Florida, the focus is now shifting to alleged evidence pulled from the waters and sent to a state crime lab for testing.

Among the items retrieved, WJXT is reporting there are 2 cinder blocks.

ArtHarris.com also reporting that investigators took yellow rope from the home of Misty Croslin’s brother, Tommy Croslin. The blocks and yellow rope jell with what Misty Croslin’s grandmother told us on our show last week. That she was told a rope was placed around Haleigh, weighted down with a brick and then the 5-year-old was tossed into the river. It looks like Ronald Cummings is still standing by Misty Croslin, even after she was spotted on video with investigators down on the dock of the St. Johns’ River in prison blues and handcuffs and the sheriff said she knows “she’s in trouble”.

According to Cummings’ attorney, Terry Shoemaker, Cummings believes if Croslin knows something about what really happened to Haleigh, he hopes she was forced or threatened by someone involved to keep her mouth shut. Shoemaker also says investigators previously told Ronald Cummings if he divorced Misty Croslin or if she landed in jail, they could probably get her to crack. Since then, both of those things have happened. Speaking of Ronald Cummings, it looks like Haleigh’s father could be out of jail soon. There’s word that Leonard Padilla is interested in helping Cummings make bail.

Haleigh Cummings Case Update: April 21,2010

Gather.com

Misty's Grandmother said on Nancy Grace that Misty had been on a three day drug binge before Haleigh disappeared and that Misty told Ronald Cummings she didn't want to babysit and Ronald told her she was going to babysit, and said Ronald is somewhat to blame in Haleigh's death for leaving Haleigh there with strung out Misty.Grandmother is also now saying she believe Misty is involved along with her other grandkids Tommy and Joe.

Bones found in river was not Haleigh's they were animal bones police confirms.Police showed Misty the bones at the dock, and then placed Misty in squad car with her brother Tommy, probably to get her to talk? but Grandmother said it will take more then that to break Misty down.

I wonder did Misty and Tommy talk about the case in the squad car? I hope police will have enough evidence soon to charge someoone.

Gather.com

"Tonight on Nancy Grace Ronalds Cummings Grandmother Ms. Sykes and Misty Grandmother Ms. Hollars was debating over was Misty Strung out on drugs the night Haleigh went missing, because Ms. Hollars said Ronald Cummings is also to blame in Haleigh's death because he knew Misty was high on drug but left Haleigh there with her.

Ronalds Grandmother said she went by the house the day Haleigh went missing and said Misty didn't appear high while Misty Grandmother Ms. said Misty was strung out on drug that day.

Misty's Grandmother also said Misty made allegation of Haleigh being molested either by Tommy or Joe while she was in the bedroom with Ronalds son.Misty said that she heard screams and the couch squeaking and she just put the covers over her head and when she took covers off her head Haleigh was gone .

Misty's sister in Chelsea Croslin entered in the interview saying she doesn't believe Misty and Tommy told Ms. Hollars anything and Ms. Hollars is just lying.

Now this story is getting sicker and sicker!! I no little Haleigh is at peace, but I hope the people involved will pay for their crime very soon."

No human remains found in Haleigh search

Despite recent broadcast reports to the contrary, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday that investigators combing the St. Johns River last week in the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings uncovered alligator toenails, teeth and other "biological" items - but no human remains.

Maj. Gary Bowling said many items considered biological were found last week during a search of the river's dark waters near Shell Harbour Road. However, he said, officials with the C.A. Pound Human Identification Lab at the University of Florida "identified everything that was biologic as not human."

The analysis of other items taken from the river for examination, which investigators have declined to elaborate on, could take weeks, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"We just took a bunch of things," Bowling said. "We took anything that could potentially be anything."

Internet and cable broadcast reports as recent as Wednesday morning suggested police last week had showed one of the key players in the Satsuma girl's disappearance human bones - possibly of Haleigh - in an effort to break the case. Other public speculation has suggested items recovered in the search included materials used to dispose of a body.

Following the river search, Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy announced that the case now was considered a homicide.

Haleigh was 5 when she was reported missing from her home while her father, Ronald Cummings, was at work and she was under the care of his ex-girlfriend Misty Croslin. The child was last seen Feb. 9, 2009.

Since then Croslin, her brother Hank "Tommy" Croslin Jr., and Haleigh's father have been arrested and remain jailed on unrelated drug-trafficking charges .........................

http://staugustine.com/news/local-news/2010-04-28/cummings-cousin-gets-15-years-drug-case

Hope Sykes' tearful pleas before a Putnam County judge Tuesday weren't enough to stave off a 15-year prison sentence in a drug-trafficking case that is embroiling the family of missing HaLeigh Cummings.

Her mood was in stark contrast to the angry defiance the judge heard in a phone call Sykes made to her mother last month after agreeing to plead no contest to the trafficking charge.

"I'm not going to boot camp," she said in the recording played for the court. "I'm telling you right now they think I'm bad now, wait till I get out of that."

Sykes was 18 when she was arrested in January on a charge of trafficking after she, her cousin Ronald Cummings, 26, and Misty Croslin, 18, were recorded selling 25 hydrocodone pills in an undercover officer's car.

Cummings was brought from the Putnam County jail Tuesday as a defense witness but was not called. His 5-year-old daughter disappeared from home in Satsuma in February 2009 and has not been found. Croslin was in the mobile home the night of the disappearance and called 911.

Cummings has been charged with five counts of trafficking and Croslin has been charged with eight in the monthlong investigation that began in December.

Croslin's brother Hank "Tommy" Croslin Jr. and a friend Donna Brock, also face single trafficking charges in the same investigation.

After Sykes' sentencing, Misty Croslin's attorney, Robert Fields, said it was difficult to weigh what the 15-year prison term meant to his client's case.

"I'll have to digest it," he said. "Judges rule on a case-by-case basis and this is a different case."

Circuit Judge Terry LaRue said he ordered the minimum mandatory sentence because Sykes sold drugs within weeks of being released from jail on an earlier drug charge.

Sykes had been out of jail less than two weeks on a possession charge when she was arrested in the trafficking case, which LaRue said disqualified her for youthful offender consideration that would have meant a much shorter sentence.

"I don't want to live this life no more," Sykes said before LaRue imposed the sentence. She admitted making light of the first arrest after she was let out of jail on her own recognizance.

"I thought, 'OK, the drugs are still out there,' " she said.

LaRue said the youthful offender statute is for young people who are pressured or led astray by peers.

"That's not the case here," he said. The later charge was more serious than a second possession arrest.

"What she did was engage in trafficking," he said.

He imposed the sentence and fined Sykes $250,000 after an hour of testimony by her family and others.

Sykes and her family were clearly shaken and tears ran as her mother buried her face in her hands. More than half a dozen people spoke in Sykes' behalf, which her attorney, Marcella Beeching, told the judge attested to a "fantastic support system."

Sykes needed drug rehabilitation and did not have a serious criminal record, her attorney said.

"There is no violence in her background," Beeching said.

Prosecutor Jacquelyn Roys requested the minimum mandatory sentence and said Sykes was an active participant in the drug sale.

Roys also played the recorded jail call for the judge, with Sykes profanely railing against any stiff sentence.

"Well, stupid us if we let her out, because she already told us what was going to happen," Roys said.

Beeching has 30 days to appeal the sentence.

Oh dear! Looks like even if the police can't prove what happened to Haleigh, those involved could be sent down for a good number of years on these drug-trafficking charges!

Tommy Croslin's lawyer now says that Tommy has made a statement about what happened to Haleigh. Tommy now says that he and Misty were in the trailer and that their cousin Joe Overstreet had come to find a gun. Overstreet went into the bedroom where Haleigh was sleeping, didn't find the gun and this set him off and Haleigh was killed by him. Tommy says that he and Misty were terrified of Joe.

SATSUMA, Fla. (CBS/AP) The father and former stepmother of missing north Florida girl Haleigh Cummings have been arrested in a drug sting.

Photo: Misty Croslin & Ronald Cummings.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said 26-year-old Ronald Cummings and 18-year-old Misty Croslin were among several arrested Wednesday in a prescription drug trafficking bust.

An undercover detective purchased nearly $4,000 worth of prescription drugs from Cummings and Croslin, according to the Associated Press.

Croslin is being held on $950,000 bond and Cummings is being held on $500,000 bond.

Haleigh Cummings disappeared in early 2009 and has not been found. Misty Croslin was baby-sitting the 5-year-old girl at the time.

Croslin later married Haleigh's father, but the pair have reportedly separated.

Anyone with information in Haleigh's disappearance is encouraged to call the Putnam County Sheriff's Office at 386-329-0800 or the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse at 888-FL-MISSING.
