Royal Navy Hands P45 To 1,020 Sailors

6:41am UK, Friday September 30, 2011

Niall Paterson, defence correspondent

Some 1,020 members of the Royal Navy will today be told they've been
selected for redundancy.

Sailors and other naval personnel from a range of ranks will be told their
fate, wherever possible, in face-to-face meetings.

Yet despite a voluntary redundancy scheme being offered, not enough have
applied - meaning 350 will be forced to leave the Navy.

The Government intends to shed 5,000 jobs from the Navy by 2015 as part of
job cuts totalling 17,000 across the three arms of the military.

Some of those who will receive their redundancy notice today will have
recently served in the seas off Libya as part of Nato's Operation Unified
Protector.

But the Government insists that those on operations, preparing for
operations, or on operational leave will not be affected.

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman said: "We need to structure our forces
to ensure that they are sufficiently flexible and adaptable to meet the demands
of an uncertain future.

"The decisions we are making are not easy but they will help to defend the
UK, protect our interests overseas and enable us to work effectively with allies
and partners to deliver greater security and stability in the wider world."

Yet given the role that the Navy has played in the Libyan campaign, some
suggest that reducing numbers and the Navy's operational effectiveness at a time
of such global instability and uncertainty represents a strategic risk - as well
as impacting on already low morale.

"The Navy is like a big family, it's the same as the other services", Lord
West, a former First Sea Lord, told Sky News.

"To suddenly be told you're not wanted, having trained you up, got you all
ready to be willing to sacrifice your life for your nation, it's quite a
blow.

"It's more of a blow, I'd say, than if you were working in another job where
you'd expect to change jobs - that's the modern way.

"It does have a huge impact."

No ministers at the MoD were available for comment.

What a sad state of affairs that the RN , who have guarded this Sceptered Isle for hundreds of years should be depleted .

New Labour can and will lay the blame at Cameron's door for the disintegration of our armed forces.

When in truth Blair, Brown and their corrupt administrations should be charged with treason for 13 years of abuse of power and self gratification under their tenure which we as a nation are now feeling the effects.

I don"t think there ever was, or ever will be , such a corrupt Government as that which Tony Blair presided over malena and Gordon Browns "no more
boom or bust" mantra has a hollow ring. I know there is a serious chance of a Recession but Britain could have been a bit better off financially if the Banks
had been monitored more closely.
