S Korea ferry: Desperate search for survivors continues

Emergency services are continuing to search for nearly 300 people missing after a ferry carrying more than 470 sank off South Korea.

Rescue teams used floodlights to search for survivors overnight but divers were unable to enter the ship.

It is still not yet known what caused the incident, but there is a growing sense of anger as reports emerge that people were told to stay in their seats when the ship ran into trouble.

This is a terrible tragedy , many schoolchildren among the dead , photos of them with life jackets on but were told to stay in the Ferry. A couple with mobiles were able to contact their Parents on their Mobiles.

There is no explanation yet as to why the ship sank when it was not far from the Island .

On the News similar scenes of anguish from the Parents when they realise from the last telephone calls what could have been done to rescue passengers...but wasn't.

The Principal of the school the children attended was rescued and just announced he has hanged himself.

It's a terrible tragedy Panda, I believe one report said that the ship had wandered well off course.

On the early news this mornint a Woman who obviously had lost a child was physically lunging at one of the Officers she was so distraught. As far as i know, the Captain left his post but obviously someone would have taken over the wheel. What is so damning is one of the staff told the children to stay put , but they could have been saved. I just wonder how the Principal of the school managed to get out ?

Thanks kitti, obviously the Principal felt remorse and guilt. .......how did all the Teachers get out , whatever happened to the "women and children first"
at times like this. The Captain is going to be charged but that is not going to appease the families, did all the Staff on board have a drill they would adopt in an emergency like this?

It is very very sad and the report showed the children did have life jackets on so presumably could have been rescued.

The female 3rd mate was given the task of navigating the ship for the first time, it is thought she gave instructions for a sharp turn which caused the ship to list. 29 bodies have been recovered and 500 divers are searching the area.

The ship is completely submerged now making it very difficult for the Divers, 250 still missing.

The Police have blocked a march from the Island to Seoul, it's heartbreaking to see the grief .

Hi, When I give a bit more thought to this disaster,it has come to mind that the captain of ship ,said there were no ships or even fishing vessels near bye, and he felt better not to have all uptop straight away. its so easy to know whats best when the act is part way through . I realize more occurred to cause that accident ,I don't excuse anyone ,but I do realize what he said.gosh what a position to find yourselves in ,I feel sad for everyone about not moving all at once ,would made sense . the sea was said to be rough too so sad for all envolved that did want to do what best ,I don't mean the ones who tried to get off first.joyce1938

Morning joyce 1938, it's easy for us to pontificate about what we would have done , but two actions really are unforgivable, one, that the Captain handed over the crisis to the rest of the the crew while making sure he was rescued. Two, that the children were told to stay put , they should have been given priority, and that half an hour delay before thinking of trying to save them might have made a difference.

I wonder what the cause of that sinking was ? it appears they are now saying ,the ship did not take a certain turn ,so no idea yet what made this happen. yes the captain getting off ship along with passengers does seem a bit odd,i must say . those poor kids sat waiting to be submerged ,what a great tragedy this is ,lets hope truth will come out and make more sense. joyce1938

I think the boat struck a rock , all the crew have been questioned and the Captain will be charged that's for sure , it will take some time to recover all the bodies and the families are angry and heartbroken. Still well over 100 missing., I think 106 have been recovered so far.
