Update 2 - 76-year-old Briton to be extradited - possibly linked to McCann case
A 76-year-old British national, who was living in Gozo, will be extradited to the UK where he will serve time for the sexual assault of a girl aged under 13.
Roderick Macdonald, who was living in an apartment at Ta Cenc, consented to be extradited this morning before Magistrate Audrey Demicoli.
He was arrested by the Malta police in the whereabouts of Sannat yesterday.
Roderick Macdonald – who also used the surname Robinson – is also wanted by UK police who believe he can shed light on a paedophile ring possibly linked to the abduction of Madeleine McCann, according to UK tabloid newspapers Daily Mail and the Mirror.
Madeleine McCann has been missing since May 2007. She disappeared during a family holiday in Portugal as her parents Kate and Gerry were eating in a near-by restaurant
The Mirror reported that Mr Macdonald was in Algarve when the three-year-old vanished in 2007.Scotland Yard detectives chasing new leads in Praia da Luz where Madeleine went missing wanted to quiz him about paedophile rings in the area in 2007.
Police were investigating 18 possible linked break-ins at Algarve villas by a lone intruder from 2004 to 2010.The attacks stopped in 2010, at around the time Robinson was deported from Portugal to Australia for raping an eight-year-old girl there, the Mirror reported in May.
Within weeks of his release the former oil rig worker fled to Thailand but three months later he was deported back to Britain after Thai authorities found out about his past.
He moved to south coast resort Brighton where he was made to sign the sex offenders register but in 2012 he was given a suspended prison sentence in 2012 for abusing five- and seven-year-old girls in Brighton who bore a resemblance to Madeleine, the Mirror reported.
Mr Macdonald appeared in court in Malta this morning under arrest on the strength of a provisional arrest warrant issued by the courts after the UK judicial authorities requested his extradition "to serve a term of imprisonment of sexual assault of a female under 13 years of age".
A European Arrest Warrant had been issued against him on April 25, 2013, by the Lewes Crown Court in East Sussex
Police Inspector Mario Cuschieri prosecuted.

If this is what being a patsy is all about, the more they round up the better. He's alive and kicking and evil.

whilst I agree with your sentiments LJC he should only be arrested, tried and convicted for crimes he committed, not ones he hasn't, and those that cannot be solved.  I would also call him a patsy if he did nt do the crime.

on a separate issue why cannot the children he harmed be mentioned in their own right (not named) rather than suggest that it only happened because they looked like Madeleine McCann who was 2 and 4 years younger. despicable crimes happen to children, I really wish they didn't, but to mention them only in the context of missing Madeleine is equally despicable in my opinion.

I agree Tanszi and I feel sure he will only be arrested, tried and convicted for crimes he has committed. Without evidence/proof he cannot be tried or convicted. I see no harm in questioning this evil man.

Kate McCann is quoted in the Mirror as saying it is "unbelievable" police missed the chance to to quiz him before.  This comes from the mother who refused to answer 48 questions regarding the "disappearance" of her daughter, thereby hindering the police investigation seven years ago.

She does have a point though. If he was in the UK in 2012 and subject to legal proceedings how come SY didn't pursue the matter then?

And will his DNA suddenly be found in the apartment with this new investigation?

Kate needs to keep her mouth shut. What is truly "unbelievable" is that her and Gerry left 3 young children unsecure in a foreign holiday flat so that they could booze it up with friends night after night. So "unbelievable" in fact, that I don' believe it!

The gargantuan amount of blanket false propaganda this morning shows how desperate and frantic Team McCann are to smother the Portuguese forensics story.

Clarrie has spun himself into the ground so fast his arse has just hit Australia.

If Clarrie has landed in Australia, he'll soon be sent back. That country is very fussy as to who is allowed in!

And if this guy is SO important to the case, how come he looks nothing like Mr Redwood's CW e-fits?
We all know who those e-fits represent, and so do Clarrie's press eunuchs.

Oh, e-fit man's a Smithman
He owns a tennis bat
He wears beige buttoned trousers
And he fibbed in an Algarve flat ...

This guy is unlikely to have anything to do with the case and certainly not of an age to be hopping in and out of windows, etc.
As far as I'm aware, the 'paedophile gang' operating in the Algarve is merely a press invention and hasn't been demonstrated to exist.

He was arrested in Malta on Monday.

He was wanted by authorities in the UK after fleeing the country following his conviction, the Daily Mirror reports.

Scotland Yard detectives have also returned to Portugal for follow-up interviews with three suspects in the case.

Meanwhile, it was revealed last month that the initial investigation into her disappearance was hindered by police rivalry.

The unpublished report by Jim Gamble, former head of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), found that so many UK agencies got involved, it damaged relations with Portuguese police.

The report, commissioned by former UK Home Secretary Alan Johnson in 2009, was delivered in 2010 and led to the Metropolitan Police reopening the probe into Madeleine's disappearance, but was never released.

For the first time, details have been given to Sky News, revealing that Mr Gamble criticised the Association of Chief Police Officers' decision to put Leicestershire Police in charge of the operation because the McCanns lived in the county, despite the fact that the force was ill-equipped to deal with such a big investigation.

Mr Gamble said that within weeks of Madeleine going missing in May 2007, the Portuguese were given advice by CEOP, the Metropolitan Police, the Serious Organised Crime Agency and the National Police Improvement Agency
