Football boss Harry Redknapp failed to declare a tax haven
bank account set up in his dog's name for six years while "feigning
ignorance", a court has heard.


Redknapp
, 64, previously only mentioned the Monaco account when he was quizzed
during a 2006 Premier League-led investigation, jurors were told.


Prosecutor John Black QC alleged Redknapp "was feigning almost complete ignorance of its existence".


The 2006 Quest inquiry was led by former Metropolitan Police commissioner Lord Stevens.


Mr Black asked jurors to consider whether "is it the case that Mr
Redknapp could be unaware of the bank account" when he had flown out to
Monaco just a couple of years earlier to set it up in the name of his
bulldog, Rosie.

The prosecution claimed he named the HSBC account Rosie 47 - a reference to his bulldog's name and the year of Redknapp's birth.


The first trial witnesses are expected to be called this afternoon.


Despite two separate inquiries into his finances - the first launched in the wake of his receipt of a £300,000 "gift" after Rio Ferdinand signed for Leeds United from West Ham - Redknapp only registered the account to tax inspectors after his arrest in 2008.


Mr Black told Southwark Crown Court: "The existence of the bank
account was not registered to Revenue and Customs for a period of six
years, two months... after Mr Redknapp was first arrested and questioned
in the course of this investigation."


Tax inspectors were informed of the bank account "only within the
context to declare a small amount of credit interest" in 2008, Mr Black
said.


He showed the jury of eight men and four women newspaper cuttings
from 2003, which detailed Redknapp had received a £300,000 gift for the
£18m transfer of Ferdinand to Leeds United.


Redknapp - who had managed West Ham before joining Portsmouth - was
said to have described the cash he received as a "personal present".


Mr Black said the fact Redknapp paid tax on the gift was proof he knew future payments would be tax liable.


The Tottenham Hotspur manager is accused of banking transfer bonuses worth £189,000 during his time managing Portsmouth.

One of the payments was said to have been sparked by the £3 million
profit the South Coast club made on the sale of England star Peter
Crouch.


Redknapp is accused of being a "hard-headed businessman" who, alongside co-defendant Milan Mandaric, obscured the money trail for years.


Redknapp first flew out to Monaco in April 2002 to set up the account, the Crown claims.


Mr Black said "both parties must have known" they were avoiding taxes.


"These payments were a bung or offshore bonus that the parties had absolutely no intention of paying taxes for," he said.


Redknapp and former Portsmouth chairman Mandaric deny two counts of
cheating the public revenue while they were both at Portsmouth Football
Club.

Harry Redknapp told police "I write like a two-year-old and I
can't spell" as he was questioned over allegations he had hidden a
payment from the former Portsmouth chairman in a Monaco bank account, a
court heard today.


Jurors were played a recording of the Tottenham Hotspur manager
telling City of London Police: "I have never written a letter in my
life."


"I am completely and utterly disorganised. I am not going to fiddle taxes, I pay my accountant a fortune to look after me."


Earlier, the former vice president of HSBC bank in Monaco said Mr
Redknapp was the only person who had control of an account opened in the
name of his dog.


Giving evidence via videolink at Southwark Crown Court, David Cusdin confirmed Redknapp had flown to the principality to open the account.


"I was certainly aware of his visit - it was quite possible that I
didn't open the account, it was one of my team - but I was certainly
aware of the visit," he told the court.


John Black QC, for the prosecution, asked: "Is it necessary for the client to be present?"


Mr Cusdin replied: "Normally, yes. The client would have to be present."


The former bank chief also confirmed that co-defendant Milan Mandaric, who was chairman at Portsmouth FC when Redknapp was manager, was a customer, describing him as "a perfect gentleman".


He said Mandaric phoned HSBC Monaco in advance of a "rendezvous" between Redknapp and the bank.


The bank chief added that Redknapp had chosen to call the account Rosie 47 - a reference to the name of his bulldog and the year of his birth.


In the police tape, Redknapp said that as far as he was concerned the Monaco account was "dead".


"I didn't even know what bank it was I walked into - and neither did my wife," the court heard.


Both Redknapp and Mandaric deny two counts of cheating the public
revenue over two payments the former Portsmouth chairman allegedly made
into the account.

I seem to remembner that Lester Piggott got 3 years in the slammer for tax fraud back in the eighties,though i think he had about 3 mill feretted away.

Isn"t it as sad reflection of our society that those who already have enough money to last a lifetime still want more!!!! On the News tonight there was
a report that Britain had become a dishonest country and Members of the public were asked what they would do if they found a wallet. Some said if there
was a card inside with the owners name and address they would either take it to the Police or contact the owner but would keep the wallet otherwise.

I think he was making himself out to appear rather innocent and helpless in certain matters whereas
in reality I would say he is rather strewd and nobody's fool.

Apparently Spurs reserves are glad to get back into training after a weeks Jury Service...

and the judge was a West Ham fan who still holds him in high esteem due
to his playing days a West Ham!
