Government lawyers have travelled to Portugal to meet police and prosecution officials to discuss new leads in the Madeleine McCann inquiry.

The trip is the first time that lawyers from the Crown Prosecution Service have visited Portugal in connection with Scotland Yard’s £5 million review of the case.
Home Secretary Theresa May is now expected to  announce a full-scale Yard investigation into the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine in May 2007.
London’s chief crown prosecutor Alison Saunders and her deputy Jenny Hopkins flew to Portugal in April to meet counterparts to discuss leads identified in the Met’s review.
Last month the Standard revealed that detectives had identified a list of potential suspects. Detective Chief Superintendent Hamish Campbell, who supervised the review, said there were a “good number” of people who should be questioned as well as “further forensic opportunities”.
The list is thought to number around 20, including Britons. The potential suspects are thought to include a handful of known child-sex offenders who are believed to have been in the Algarve when Madeleine disappeared.
The visit by senior CPS lawyers underlines the belief among senior detectives that the case could be solved.
Portuguese police led the search for Madeleine after she went missing from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz while her parents dined nearby.
The investigation was shelved in 2008 but the Yard launched a Home Office-funded review in 2011 after David Cameron intervened at the request of Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann. The review team examined hundreds of thousands of documents from the Portuguese investigation and enquiries by a private detective agency employed by Madeleine’s family and identified 195 potential leads.
A full Yard investigation would allow police to interview suspects in Britain though they would seek the assistance of the Portuguese to carry out any enquiries there.
A CPS spokesman said: “We continue to work with the police on this case.”
A Home Office spokesman said it had agreed to “provide the Metropolitan Police with the resources they need”.

I think it's good too margaret!! As far as I know, the police do the investigating and then the CPS decide whether to bring charges. There must be some UK suspects then

I don't know anything anymore.  I hope I am wrong, but i think they will be let off scot free!  The Mccanns seem to have run the whole shallywag since May 3rd, the huge amount of money that has been spent protecting them, makes me despondant.  Even when they legged it from PDL when already arguido wasn't right, any one else has their passport/ID cards removed, yet they were free to just go.  It hasn't added up at anytime, and I can't see that changing now.

But I will of course live in hope that i am wrong

I think it's good and I'm with you on this chrissie. As far as I know, the CPS are brought in when the police feel they have enough evidence for a prosecution. It's then up to the CPS to make the decision. I can't imagine that the CPS would be brought in otherwise.

Argh Fred, fingers crossed!

Not only enough evidence for a prosecution but WHO to prosecute.  The CPS aren't involved at the beginning of any case - only the end and that means SY have some culprits.

I think it's good also.
It's in keeping with the cooperation between the two countries thus far.
They will have looked at the joint findings and conclusions from both investigative review teams.
They will surely have discussed a plan of action re the best way forward from hereon in, based on their chief suspects' propensity for wriggling out of trouble at every turn. And have decided that a potential UK investigation and prosecution would reduce their wriggle room to the size of your average public phone box.

Well I havent read about this yet.  But it's got to be better than review closed and a mystery person did it.  You would think the CPS wouldn't be involved if all they had was a swarthy spotty stranger lurking.  Or even if they decided somebody who had died was responsible.  It's anybody's guess where this will go next.

Me neither Kitti, and up until now there hasn't been anything in the Portuguese press about any of this!!

Well since I'm afraid I still think that for some reason the Mccanns are untouchable, despite the numerous story changes and downright lies they have told over the years, I'm guessing a suitable patsy will be found.  I would like to think I'm wrong, but I won't hold my breath.

When I saw the topic heading "CPS" I thought it referred to Child Protection Services.  Upon reading the article I see that it stands for Crown Prosecution Service.  I know Madeleine was made a ward of the court.  I'm not clear on exactly what that designation entails but could it have some connection (apart from the obvious connection to the ongoing investigation) to Madeleine's status under that designation?  In any case, I do like the sound of "prosecution"; I remain hopeful.

If I remember correctly some officials of a child protection agency did pay the McCanns a visit when they returned to the U.K. albeit only for tea, per the parents.

Yes, I would have thought the same. The CPS going to Portugal could indicate they were seeking information from their Portugese counterparts with a vew to dealing with suspects in the UK. The visit is cited as towards the end of April, near enough to the photograph of Gerry looking devastated at the memorial service. I keep going back to that photo, I think it's one of the most significant things in recent imes.

Is Clarrie still encouraged I wonder, has he turned up yet ? Clarrie I'm worried about the lack of comments of late, are Kate and Gerry speechless ?

Yes, where is Mitchell; he hasn't "tweeted" since May 29, and that had something to do with Wembley.  Prior to that he "tweeted" on May 17 that the McCanns "continue to be pleased and encouraged" and the usual, will not comment on operational police matters.

Let's hope his absence indicates they are worried sick.

They may soon find out how few friends they have as the pink rats start a running.  

...and so it seems the Mccanns are back in Portugal?????  Anyone know anything more??
