Boy aged nine accidentally shoots and kills two-year-old brother

NORTH HILLS -- A toddler is dead after his 9-year-old brother found a gun at their home in North Hills and accidentally shot him.

Police responded to a shooting call at an apartment complex in the 16700 block of Parthenia Street around 5:50 p.m. Friday.

Arriving officers found a 2-year-old child with a single gunshot wound to the upper torso.

The child was rushed to Northridge Hospital, but died soon after his arrival.

Police questioned the toddler's family and determined his 9-year-old brother had accidentally shot him while playing with a firearm he found in a closet.

Detectives recovered the weapon as evidence.

They would not confirm whether the gun was locked up.

Police are still investigating the incident. They said no charges were pending.
