SOHAM murderer Ian Huntley is to sue the Prison Service after he was attacked by an inmate in a County Durham jail.
Huntley's throat was slashed at Frankland Prison in March.
The 36-year-old, who murdered the 10-year-old schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, is claiming the service has failed in its duty of care towards him.
He is understood to be claiming almost £100,000 in damages and the case could cost the taxpayer more than £1m in legal aid fees.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman said last night the compensation claim would be "vigorously defended".
Huntley was moved to Frankland, a Category A high security men's prison, in 2008.
While at Frankland he was attacked and slashed across the throat by a prisoner with a razor blade.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "Ian Huntley is bringing a claim against the Ministry of Justice following an assault by another prisoner."
Unquote.
This should never be allowed to happen.....scum like Huntley have no rights or claims against society, he turned his back on civilised society and human rights when he took the lives of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. He doesn't seem to like a taste of the fear he inflicted on two innocent children,.... In my opinion the authorities need to release him into the general prison circulation in order to ensure his full rehab potential is achieved, not cosset him away in a private cell with colour tv and porno mags.

Malena Stool Just been speaking with my oh about this, he should have been put in a cell with a bog, sink and a bed with a pot of baked beans slipped in once aday, (after what he did to those two children) then no one would have been able to get a hold of Huntley in the first place.
OH said that if he wins his case, then the in-mates will want to try a throttle him again, not only is he a child murderer he is a greedy b4stard aswell.

They should give a medal to the other prisoner, let him finish the job and do the rest of us a favour.

buildersbum and tfg, I agree with you both but he should never have had the opportunity to be attacked... capital punishment should be the order of the day for those who molest, maim or kill the most vulnerable of our society, children, the infirm and the elderly. Failing such laws being passed however, scum such as Huntley should never be released into society again because they can never be rehabilitated, nor should they be given preferential treatment and seclusion in any institution. Let them look over their shoulder and live in fear of retribution for the rest of their lives.

I don't condone violence but it is beginning to seem to me as if prisoners have far more rights than the victims of crime.
One blogger does think the opposite though and is all for Huntley suing the authorities, utter disgrace and disrespect to the parents of Holly and Jessica in my humble opinion.

The idea of prisoners rights has developed out of all perspective. The trouble with British justice and probably judicial systems across the world is people with power or wannabe celebs' often times represent themselves as the prisoner's advocate perhaps to cover their own misdeeds or earn Brownie points with voters.
The stark difference in appliance of the law is plainly seen in the recent exposure of MPs expenses theft. While they were openly stealing huge amounts of money from the public purse at a time when the monetary system of the world was collapsing they arrogantly still advertised on National TV that benefit theft was a crime, and benefit cheats would be caught and punished. How many of our MPs have been prosecuted? How many are facing prosecution? Would a common criminal avoid prosecution by offering to repay any money stolen?
Sorry.......rant over. ms

Re: Ian Huntley to sue Prison Service after he was attacked in Frankland jail
I think Huntley should be grateful that so much money has gone into keeping him safe most of the time. He must be aware that to 'ordinary crims,' he is the lowest of the low for what he did to those two children. Perhaps he should contemplate why those other crims might want to slash his throat, that it might have something to do with the heinous nature of the crime he committed.

What on earth would he use the money for if he got it? I doubt Huntley will ever get the chance to spend it.
The fact he is happy to persue this speaks volumes about the mind of the man.
