Through no fault of their own? 11 children die, 'one' of the survivors indicates there were more than one, so that's at least 12 people in a boat designed for 3?
And surely to lose any child is just heart breaking - how can their loss be 100 times worse than anybody elses who loses a child?

It can be many many times worse in a way than the loss of a child through one's own neglect. We don't know the background to this story. I'll have a look, but this may have been a very poor family thinking they were managing to give the kids a treat, which would be so very sad.
When I was a child, we were quite poor and there was another big family on the council estate, who were also very poor. When the oldest child left school and got a job, he spent his first week's wages on an inflatable dinghy and took all five of the younger kids out on the local loch. The dinghy capsized and all of them drowned. It was so sad because those kids had never been able to pay to go out on one of the pleasure boats and this was the treat the oldest lad had looked forward to giving them.

Brainfreeze, I haven't found any more information, but we cannot at the moment make judgments about a family taking a boat trip, a family who were probably poverty-stricken, in a country where children live on the streets. Why would so many people crowd onto a small fishing boat? Lack of financial resources, I'd say, and probably not what they would have done had they been doctors.
At least those children were with a family member.

Yes, ever so sad. I was at primary school when it happened and I just haven't forgotten the feelings of sadness from that time. I still feel it thinking about that lad going out and buying the dinghy to treat his younger siblings, and the excitement they must have felt. The local loch was the entertainment for us poor folks during the summer. I remember winning the jackpot on the 'puggy,' (fruit machine) at my aunt's shop and buying a swimming costume. That family, the Middletons, obviously never won on the 'puggy,' because they used to go swimming in the loch in their underwear.
Re: 11 children from same family drown
Anna, that sad story about the lad treating his siblings and then their deaths is just heartbreaking. What an awful thing to happen.
And indeed, we don't know why so many children from the same family went on the boat in Brazil, but you're probably right that it may have been a way for all the children to have a treat if the family is poor. It's truly dreadful, no matter what the circumstances.

Re: 11 children from same family drown
This is very sad - maybe in these far distant countries - they seem to have no conception of safety. If this was a normal practice, either to cross the lake or to visit another destination its because they are unaware of the risk.
It's a horrid thing to happen. But wasn't there a disaster right here on the Thames with a pleasure boat.
