Mother locks kids in closet - two die.
Horror as mother 'locks her five small children in 6ft closet while she goes out for 10 hours... then comes home to find two dead'
Two children have died after their mother apparently locked them in a closet with their three siblings for more than ten hours.
Edyan Farah, 28, allegedly put all five of her children - aged one through to seven - into the small closet and pushed a bed in front of the door so they could not get out.
The closet was 6ft long and about 18in deep.
Farah left for ten and a half hours to visit a friend on Sunday. When she came back to her home in Indianaopolis, she opened the closet to find her five-year-old daughter Zuhur and three-year-old son Zakariya 'stiff and unresponsive'.
She told officers she carried them downstairs but did not call for help or try to revive them.
Four hours later, a family friend grew concerned when Farah - who was acting strangely - refused to let anyone in the apartment.
The friend then called Farah's uncle to the apartment complex. When he arrived and looked through the door of the apartment, he saw what appeared to be a dead child on the couch.
When he tried to call 911, Farah grabbed his phone from his hands and threw it away.
He then held her down as the family friend retrieved the phone and called for help.

A single rose lies at the door of the apartment where two children were found dead
A single rose lies at the front door of the apartment. 'It's just a very, very sad case,' said one police officer
Now Farah has been charged with neglect resulting in her children's deaths.
She told police she was 'not in her right mind' at the time of the incident.
An autopsy has not indicated how the two children died.
Police and neighbours said the children appeared malnourished - but the coroner said that while the two children were thin, she did not consider them emaciated.
Hussein Adam, a cousin of the children's father, said Monday that the family had emigrated from Somalia about a decade ago. He said Farah's husband had returned there several weeks ago to visit his parents, but was en route back to the U.S.
Lt. Jeff Duhamell said the three surviving children - a seven-year-old girl and boys ages five and one - are now in foster care. 'It's just a very, very sad case,' he said.
'It's one of the worst ones I've seen - to be placed in a closet approximately 18in by 6ft and a bed pushed up against it for a minimum of ten hours. We think possibly a lot longer and probably not for the first time.'
Farah is due to appear in court today.

And I suppose that this comes under the banner of responsible parenting because she didn't leave them so that they could harm themselves, go looking for her or wander out into the street. Beyond belief and further than that.

Re: Mother locks kids in closet - two die.
This is another awful case - does anyone think that something odd is happening to parents in general.
Is it the stressful lives we lead or something else. Personality disorders as suggested on another thread here : Interesting Info on Erasure killers by hobnob
Or is it the media ever intent on parading how other people "have more fun, more money, more everything" so that some people see their own life as being "hampered' by their children.

Even when food shopping nowadays, we are presented with an incredible range of glossy magazines and consumer goods, from clothing, to household goods to plasma TVs. When I was a child, buying something like a new TV was a major event and a trip to the TV shop. Now, there's so many of them arranged on the shelves, just inviting shoppers to pick them up and take them home. We've got 24 hour TV and when I did a survey of a class in a secondary school, some pupils still had their hands up when I got to 'five or more games consoles in your home.' We've got ToysRus and BabiesRus, where people leave with trolley loads of packaged stuff to make baby the best dressed child in the most expensive buggy around. Unfortunately, once the child is dressed in all those clothes, padded with the best brand nappy, wiped with aloe vera wipes, and placed in the do-everything-but-fill-a-baby-bottle buggy, they tend not to show gratitude: they make noise and they make demands of time and energy. They don't always gurgle like the babies on YouTube or on the posters!
Re: Mother locks kids in closet - two die.
The obvious cause of death is asphyxia. In that case, a charge of neglect leading to death is insufficient imo.
I agree with kitti - despite her name she was likely on the piss. Or the 'friend' was a lover?
What a piece of scum!

Being locked in a cupboard and having the door jammed so they couldn't get out, must have been like being buried alive! Poor little mites must have been frantic.

Evil bitch! Hopefully after the court case she'll be 'locked in' herself, for a lot longer than 10 hours. Poor little mites.

At times it seems we are subjected to an endless stream of news concerning horrendous tragedies involving children which justifies the question as to whether something odd is going on, however I may be wrong but I think that it has more to do with the speed and the volume of news that we are subjected to through 24 hour coverage via the Internet and other media. Perhaps as little as 10 to 15 years ago we would not have heard anything about this tragedy in Indianapolis since at that time the volume of news had to be prioritized and only the more important events were reported; this 'story' would have been out of date and overtaken by other events. IMO the total volume of news events in the world has not necessarily changed, but a greater proportion is reported and catches our attention, giving us the subjective impression that the world has gone mad.

I agree with what you say about the speed of news events - they circle the globe now and I understand and accept that this is one reason why there seems to be an increase. But I think "hobnob" on another thread (shades of casey) also has a point. Having children may have become a "must have item" no thought about looking after the child once it has been born and all the time and love needing to be invested in looking after a child.
When women are pregnant, an abundance of attention given to them right from the initial confirmation. It continues with many people giving presents etc, even after the child is born this goes on. And then after a while reality returns and they become one among many as far as the wider public is concerned. Is this maybe the turning point, not being the centre of attention, that can cause mothers to regard the child as a nuisance. Especially if they don't have family members near to co-opt the babysitting for some much needed respite. Are we really looking after these "new mums" and should we do more for them. I am in no way condoning these mothers/fathers/ but only trying to discover what drives them to do such awful things.

I have no doubt that hobnob has a point, but such so-called 'designer' parents as the McCanns and their buddies as well as certain supportive TV celebs and journalists are in fact a small minority. The majority of parents are no different from previous generations, love their kids and look after them well. I would hazard a guess that this includes the majority of posters on this forum, which is why they are incensed at the McCanns' behaviour and of course Mitchell's inane "We all do it" comment.

Re: Mother locks kids in closet - two die.
Some extra detail from my local paper. It appears she is from Somalia.
On Monday, Farah was charged with two preliminary counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in death. She remained jailed Tuesday at the Marion County Jail on a $200 000 bond. Susan Decker, a spokeswoman for the county prosecutor's office, said Farah will appear in court Wednesday to be advised of her rights but that prosecutors have requested 72 more hours to prepare formal charges.
Decker said she did not know whether Farah had an attorney. She said the prosecutor's office had no comment on the case, adding that “everything is still under investigation at this point”.
An autopsy performed on Monday did not show how the boy and girl died and toxicology results that could reveal that would take three to four weeks, said chief deputy coroner Alfarena Ballew. She said coroner's office investigators returned to the apartment on Tuesday to re-examine the scene.
.......
Hussein Adam, a cousin of the children's father, said on Monday that the family had emigrated from Somalia about a decade ago. He said Farah's husband had returned there several weeks ago to visit his parents, but was en route back to the US.

Re: Mother locks kids in closet - two die.
Too many hormonal problems imo and not enough support imo. Years ago the whole extended family cared for the little ones but nowadays folk live further away from extended family, as Kate and Gerry did, and as so well put by Angelique they all disappear back home once the excitement of the first few weeks of baby's life have passed. Still not an excuse for cruelty though.

Re: Mother locks kids in closet - two die.
So totally unbelievable that anyone would do such a thing. Those poor children - what they must have suffered. Lately it's just been one report after another of children dying in really odd circumstances, or of a father or mother killing their children because of impending divorce or some other family problem. Maybe it's true we hear more quickly nowadays about these tragic cases, but IMO there is an increase in children being killed either accidentally or deliberately. I just hope in this case the police are allowed to go about their work unhampered.

I can't understand why this woman has been charged with neglect, leading to death, unless further charges are going to be brought later. The person responsible for barricading these children in the cupboard has surely committed manslaughter.
