The police also confirmed reports that two people were hospitalized, two with minor injuries. They were nearby when the car exploded.
Police bomb team was sent out in conjunction with other techniques. The alarm came in at 16:52 on Saturday. Police sealed off the areas around the cars.
- We have received 50 calls to 112, says Bengt Norberg, manager of SOS in Stockholm.
Many cars on site
At least three cars from the fire service is in place and six ambulances.
According to the Stockholm police officer Petra Sjölander, it is therefore only about a car that has exploded. Police received a first phase information indicating that there were two cars that were in a fire.
The car was standing at the intersection of Queen Street / Olof Palmes gata.

Is there any connection between these two events?

Have you found any trace of the bombs?
- We have a lot of people working on the site to find out what has happened. All I can say, "said Sjolander.

One person has been killed and at least one other hurt as two explosions rocked the centre of the Swedish capital, Stockholm, reports say.
A car blew up near the busy shopping street of Drottninggatan, and another explosion hit nearby shortly afterwards, AP quoted police as saying.
A man's body was discovered after the second blast, the agency reported.
Swedish Aftonbladet newspaper showed images of a burning white car. The cause of the blasts is not yet known.
Rescue services spokesman Roger Sverndal said the car which exploded had contained gas canisters, AP reported.
A former AP worker, Gabriel Gabiro, was close to the second blast.
"I saw some people crying, perhaps from the shock," he told the agency.
"There was a man lying on the ground with blood coming out in the area of his belly, and with his personal belongings scattered around him."

Re: Car Bomb Blast in Stockholm, Sweden
(CNN) -- A car explosion killed one person and injured two others Saturday in central Stockholm, Swedish police said.
Multiple blasts went off on the car in a major shopping district in the city, full of holiday shoppers, according to police spokeswoman Petra Sjolander.
"It is likely that this was some kind of gas tubes that have caused the car to explode multiple times," she said.
The victim was found a few hundred meters from the scene, she said, adding that the connection between the man and the explosion is not immediately known.
Sjolander also declined to identify the cause of the explosion, saying "we don't want to speculate" whether it was a manmade blast or an accident.
Two other people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, she said.
"There is no risk of any further explosions as we see it and the car will now be examined," Sjolander said.

Sweden Rocked by Bombings
11 Dec 2010
- by Sarah Jordan, Contributing Writer; Research by Jasmine Enberg, Staff Writer
At least one person was killed and two others wounded as a car exploded in Stockholm's Drottninggatan road, a major shopping street in the heart of the city.
There was a second explosion just a few streets away, only minutes later.
In reference to the second blast, Gabriel Gabiro, in statements to the Associated Press said, "There was a man lying on the ground with blood coming out in the area of his belly, and with his personal belongings scattered around him."
The cause of the blasts is unknown but the car did have gas canisters inside.
Rescue spokesman Roger Sverndal confirmed the gas canisters in the car bomb and that the two injured people had suffered only light injures but were nevertheless taken to the hospital.
According to Svenska Dagbladet, Swedish officials have stated, after preliminary investigations, that the dead man "blew himself up."
Furthermore, they report, a letter threatening terrorist action was sent to Swedish officials prior to the two explosions. The author of the letter blamed Swedes for their silence regarding the Lars Vilks 2007 drawings depicting Mohammad as a dog, and it also raised complaints over the presence of Swedish troops in Afghanistan, adding "now your children, daughters and sisters will die just like our brothers, sisters and children are dying."
The author went on to add, "Our actions will speak for themselves."
For now, it appears as if the explosions were, in fact, terrorist attacks on the Swedish capital at the start of the Christmas shopping season.

An man has blown himself up in central Stockholm, reports news agency TT. At the same time a car containing gas canisters exploded nearby. Police are remaining tight lipped as to whether the two incidents are connected.
According to TT, an e-mail was sent to them and to Sweden's Intelligence Service, SÄPO, ten minutes before the explosion, addressed to "Sweden and the Swedish people", where the writer mentions the "Swedish silence" over controversial artist Lars Vilks and the Swedish military presence in Afghanistan, and writes "now your children, daughters and sisters will die, like our brothers, sisters and children are dying".
TT reports that SÄPO are refusing to comment on the mail, and cannot confirm either that it has anything to do with the explosions in the centre of the city.
Speaking to newspaper Dagens Nyheter's website, a witness claims it looked like the dead man had been carrying something which exploded on his stomach. There are also reports that he had a bag containing nails close by.
Two other people were slightly injured close to the exploding car.

Car- and Suicide-Bombings in Stockholm, Sweden Target Christmas Shoppers, Especially Women and Children
The invaluable Islam In Europe reports:
A man blew himself up in a suicide attack in central Stockholm this evening surrounded by Christmas shoppers (SE, SE). A car exploded just minutes earlier on a nearby street, injuring two people... The man carried six pipe-bombs, but only one exploded. In addition he had a backpack filled with nails, and a possible additional bomb...
According to witnesses, the man shouted something in Arabic before he detonated the bombs.
The bomber was the only one killed in the attack. Several people nearby went into shock and suffered hearing loss.
The bombs detonated at Bryggargatan street. According to one source, if he would have blown up on the nearby Drottninggatan street, it would have been a massacre...
Approximately ten minutes before the explosions occurred, Swedish news agency TT received an email, also addressed to Säpo, in which a reached out to “Sweden and the Swedish people”.
He cites Sweden’s silence surrounding the cartoons by Swedish Lars Vilks which portray the prophet Mohammed as a dog, the Swedish troops in Afghanistan, saying in audio files attached to the email that “now your children, daughters and sisters die like our brothers’ and sisters’ children die”.
“Our actions will speak for themselves. As long as you don’t stop your ward against Islam and degrading the prophet and your stupid support of that pig Vilks,” the man said.
The man also urges all Muslims in Sweden to “stop sucking up to and degrading”. He concludes the message with yet another call to “all the mujahedeen in Europe and Sweden”.
“Now it’s time to act, don’t wait any longer. Fear no one, don’t fear prison, don’t fear death.”
The message contained audio files in both Swedish and Arabic. The audio files do not link the man to any organization. The man also says that he's been to the Middle East and asks his family to forgive him for lying to them. "I never went to the Middle East to work or earn money. I went there for Jihad."
In the midst of the Christmas shopping district, the jihadist's aims were simple and obvious: kill more innocents, women and children especially.
I contacted CAIR to see if they would issue a statement, but have received no response thus far.

Suicide bomber strikes in Stockholm

Crime scene in Stockholm: "It could have been a massacre"
Terror in Stockholm in the Swedish capital on Saturday, two bombs exploded, one of which the offender was wearing. According to information from SPIEGEL ONLINE is by the suicide bomber was a young Iraqi. He should have worn more explosives on the body.
Stockholm - Soon after the security agencies have warned a rise in stroke risk before, has for the first time a suicide bomber in Sweden awarded. According to previous information, two explosions rocked on Saturday night in Stockholm : A car bomb and another bomb, the bomber was wearing on the body. The two bombings are related obviously.
According to information from SPIEGEL ONLINE is by the suicide bomber was a young Iraqi who had been very active in various social networking sites, and had positioned there against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Swedish authorities believe that the man was also sent the warning, the ten minutes had gone before the explosion at the Swedish news agency and the Security Police.
It appears that the attacks could have been devastating. Sweden's leading terrorism expert Magnus Ranstorp, research director of the Swedish Defense College, told SPIEGEL ONLINE that the man had worn for more recent information explosives and a large quantity of nails in his backpack with him. These additional explosive devices are not apparently exploded.
"It could have been a massacre," said Ranstorp.
So far, no evidence of involvement of al-Qaeda
So far there is no indication whether the man acted alone or was part of a network. Ranstorp suggested, however, that the explosions were too complex for an isolated individual perpetrators.
No known terrorist organization has so far claimed responsibility for the bombing. The terrorist network al-Qaeda and other jihadist groups have in recent months repeatedly made Scandinavian countries to target their propaganda, especially in Denmark, because of the Mohammed cartoons.
Several weeks ago, al Qaeda's branch had on the Arabian peninsula, the Swedish artist Lars Vilks is set to a death list. The assassin of Stockholm was referring to its announcement bomb apparently also Vilks. Evidence for the participation of al-Qaeda is not yet.

Two 'Suicide' Explosions In Swedish Capital
Share Comments
Pete Norman, Sky News Online
Two explosions killed a man and injured two other people in a busy shopping area in central Stockholm, Swedish police have confirmed.
The two explosions were described as a "terrorist" attack in a Twitter message sent by Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.
"Most worrying attempt at terrorist attack in crowded part of central Stockholm," Bildt tweeted.
"Failed - but could have been truly catastrophic..." he added.
The two almost simultaneous explosions were a suicide attack, according to SVT television.
It said the only person to die in the attack was the bomber, and a bag filled with nails was found near the body.
Police spokesman Kjell Lindgren said it was possible that the dead man had blown himself up, but this had not been confirmed by investigators.
Lindgren said police were also investigating whether other, unexploded bombs were on the scene.
The TT news agency said it had received an email warning with a threat to Sweden and its people ahead of the Stockholm explosions.
It said the threat was linked to Sweden's presence with Nato in Afghanistan, where it has a force of 500 soldiers, mainly in the north.
TT said the warning, which was also sent to Sweden's Security Police, was received 10 minutes before the blasts, and also referred to caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed by Swedish artist Lars Vilks.
The email had sound files in Swedish and Arabic.
"Our actions will speak for themselves, as long as you do not end your war against Islam and humiliation of the Prophet and your stupid support for the pig Vilks," TT quoted a man as saying in one of the sound files.
Police spokeswoman Petra Sjolander said the first explosion had been in a car containing gas canisters.
Media reported scenes of panic among teeming Christmas shoppers, with people fleeing amid smoke and the smell of explosives.
Vilks depicted the Prophet with the body of a dog in a cartoon in 2007, however most Muslims consider any depiction of the founder of Islam as offensive.
A short message commenting on the terror attacks was posted on Vilks' website late on December 11.
Last March, an American who called herself "JihadJane" was charged with plotting to kill Vilks and using the Internet to enlist co-conspirators.
In May, arsonists tried to set fire to Vilks' house.

Sweden Launches Terror Inquiry After Stockholm Bombing
TV4, via Associated Press
Emergency services attended the scene after a car exploded in the center of Stockholm on Saturday.

STOCKHOLM — Sweden’s domestic intelligence service will investigate two explosions that hit the heart of Stockholm’s central shopping district on Saturday, killing one man and injuring two other people, as “an act of terrorism,” authorities said Sunday.
A police forensics team examined the remains of a suspected suicide bomber in central Stockholm on Saturday.
But the country’s prime minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, stopped short of connecting the bombs to an e-mail that a Swedish news organization received minutes before the blasts, which seemed to link the attacks to anger over anti-Islamic cartoons and the war in Afghanistan.
A car parked near the busy shopping street of Drottninggatan exploded first, shortly before 5 p.m. local time Saturday, and the wreckage of the vehicle included gas canisters, authorities said. A second blast followed minutes later, and about 200 yards away. A man’s body, with blast injuries to his abdomen, was discovered after the second explosion.
Swedish newspapers portrayed the dead man as a suicide bomber, and the newspaper Aftonbladet said on its Web site that he had been carrying pipe bombs and a backpack full of nails. But the police declined to confirm this Sunday.
Mr. Reinfeldt, speaking at a Sunday press conference, said that investigators were still working to establish links among the two explosions, the dead man and a threatening e-mail sent to the Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyra just prior to the explosions.
At a separate press conference Sunday, Sweden’s domestic intelligence service, Sapo, announced that it, not the regular police force, would lead the investigation as the events marked an “extraordinary situation.” A police spokesman said that police presence in Stockholm would also increase.
An editor at Tidningarnas Telegrambyra, Dan Skeppe, said the agency had received an e-mail minutes before the blasts. The e-mail was also addressed to Sweden’s security police and included a sound recording addressed to “Sweden and the Swedish people.” Mr. Skeppe said the recording cited Swedish “silence” over cartoons of the prophet Muhammad drawn by the artist Lars Vilks, criticized Sweden’s 500-soldier military contingent in northern Afghanistan and threatened attacks on Swedes.
“Now, your children — daughters and sisters — will die like our brothers and sisters and children die,” it continued. “Our actions will speak for themselves. As long as you do not end your war against Islam and the insult against the prophet and your stupid support for that pig Vilks.”
The Stockholm blasts seemed certain to cause widespread shock in Sweden. The country has long prided itself on having created a stable and peaceful society at home, and on having avoided involvement in the upheavals that have ravaged much of the rest of Europe in modern times, including World War II.
It has previously escaped the types of bombings mounted elsewhere in Europe since the 9/11 attacks in the United States. The Swedish military’s current deployment in Afghanistan, adding signals intelligence specialists to a NATO-led combat mission under American command, is a rare departure from the country’s usual pattern of avoiding involvement in military alliances.
Another major change has been the impact of heavy immigration, especially Muslims. Their growing numbers, and the furor surrounding Mr. Vilks, have contributed to a rise in tensions that have led to increased support for a right-wing anti-immigration party, the Sweden Democrats, which won 20 seats this summer in a general election. The party, blaming immigration for increased crime rates, has focused its ire on the Muslim population, which accounts for about 5 percent of Sweden’s 9.3 million people.
Mr. Reinfeldt, responding to a question about potential racial tensions Sunday, encouraged Swedes to “have patience.” He said that Sweden’s “openness is worth giving ourselves the time to get to the bottom of this,” and warned of jumping to the “wrong conclusions.”
There have been no official reports of a connection to al-Qaeda or any other extremist Islamic terror organization. But in an interview Saturday a former British counter-terror official, who did not want to be named discussing a current operation, said that a number of known Islamic militants have traveled to Sweden in the past two years. The account was confirmed by an American intelligence operative, who spoke of an established al-Qaeda “cell” in Sweden. Both declined to provide further details.
The recorded message demanded that Muslims in Sweden “stop sucking up and degrading yourselves” and broadened the appeal to “all mujahedeen,” or holy warriors, in Europe. “Now it’s time to attack,” it said. “Do not wait any longer. Come forth with whatever you have, even if it is a knife, and I know that you can bring more than knives. Fear no one. Do not be afraid of jail. Do not fear death.”
Mr. Skeppe said there was no indication in the e-mail what sort of an attack was planned, or when. “They didn’t mention that anything specific would happen at all,” he said.
Several Swedish news organizations described the e-mail as having been sent anonymously, but Mr. Skeppe declined to confirm that nor to say whether the e-mail named the individual or organization who sent it. The e-mail’s reference to Mr. Vilks, a 64-year-old artist and free-speech activist, pointed to the deep anger in the Muslim world over his drawings of the prophet Muhammad in 2007.
Publication of the drawings in Swedish newspapers drew widespread condemnation in the Muslim world and death threats against Mr. Vilks, who has since lived under police protection. In March this year, Colleen R. LaRose, an American who has converted to Islam and used the pseudonym JihadJane, was charged with trying to recruit Islamic terrorists to kill Mr. Vilks.
Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical cleric associated with al-Qaeda in the Arabia Peninsula, an offshoot of the organization based in Yemen, had named Mr. Vilks in a list of figures he approved for assassination in a publication this summer.

A suicide bomber who died in a terrorist bomb attack which rocked Stockholm city centre, is believed to be a graduate from a British university.
A Facebook page thought to belong to the 29-year-old indicated that he studied sports therapy at the University of Bedfordshire in Luton. He graduated in 2004.
The man, named locally as Taimour Abdulwahab Al-Abdaly, had also posted numerous videos relating to the Iraq war, the war in Chechnya and the US prison camp at Guantanamo Bay.

The Iraqi-born bomber first set his car on fire and then walked 200 metres before the explosives, believed to be in a backpack strapped to his body, detonated.
Just minutes before, he had sent out an email to the police and a news agency warning of deadly reprisals for having Swedish soldiers in Afghanistan.
He was the registered owner of the car that blew up and was believed to have worked on the street corner on which he died, carrying a sign advertising a local fish-and-chip restaurant..
Looking for love: Suspected bomber Taimour Abdulwahab Al-Abdaly used Muslim dating sit Muslima.com (left) in his search for a second wife
The man is also thought to have been active on Muslim contact sites, where he claimed to be looking for a second wife.
In one message on the site Muslima.com, he says that he was born in Iraq and moved to Sweden in 1992. He said he had two daughters, one aged three and one under the age of two. He said he wanted to marry again and that his first wife had agreed to this.

'In the future, am looking for to move to an arabic [sic] country and settle down there,' he wrote.
Investigators will be certain to investigate the man’s connections with Luton, a town which has featured in numerous terror investigations in the past.
A leaked British intelligence report from 2008 identified Luton as being home to one of the main concentrations of Islamic extremists in the country.
The men behind the 7/7 bombings of London’s public transport system in 2005 gathered in the town before heading into the British capital. The leader of the gang, Mohammed Sidique Khan, was in regular contact with a man in Luton known as ‘Q’, who was funneling money and equipment to al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.
Police currently believe his bomb may not have detonated properly and too early. They are keen to trace a man who was seen speaking to the suspect just minutes before his backpack exploded.
Officially, police said that they did not know the identity of the bomber.
But a source told the newspaper Expressen. that they were '95 percent certain” that the car owner and the suicide bomber were the same person. They have linked the blasts and are investigating them as 'crimes of terror.'
Swedish Radio claim that police are searching the suspected terrorist’s apartment in Tranås.
Shoppers were lucky to escape a 'catastrophe' according to Sweden's Foreign Minister Carl Bildt .
He wrote on Twitter: 'Most worrying attempt at terrorist attack. Failed - but could have been truly catastrophic.'

The second blast was about 200 metres (650 feet) away. A man thought to be the bomber was found injured on the ground and later pronounced dead.
A bag filled with nails was found near him, according to Swedish news agency SVT. Witnesses said he had a large wound to his stomach as if something had exploded there.
Gabriel Gabiro, who heard the second blast from inside a watch store across the street, said: 'There was a man lying on the ground with blood coming out in the area of his belly, and with his personal belongings scattered around him
'It shook the store that I was in. Then there was smoke and gun powder coming in. I saw some people crying.'

The e-mail referred to Sweden's silence surrounding cartoonist Lars Vilk's drawing of Muhammad as a dog and its soldiers in Afghanistan.
It warned: ' Our acts will speak for themselves. Now your children, daughters and sisters shall die like our brothers and sisters and children are dying.'
Punitive actions would continue 'as long as you do not stop your war against Islam, your degradation of the Prophet and your stupid support for the pig Vilks.'
Vilks has been the object of death threats and at least one plot to kill him.
In the message to his family contained in the audio file sent to the news agency the man referred to an earlier trip to the Middle East:
'I never went to the Middle East to work or earn money. I went there for Jihad,' he said.
The message concluded by urging 'mujahideen,' or Islamic fighters, to rise up in Sweden and in Europe, the news agency said.
TT said a similar warning had been sent to the Swedish Security Service SAPO.
Sweden has 500 soldiers serving with NATO's International Security Assistance force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, but their mandate only runs to January 1, 2011, and would need to be renewed by parliament for them to stay on.
On October 1, Sweden's intelligence agency Saepo said it had raised the alert level for attacks from low to elevated, putting it at three on an alert scale of five.

A search warrant was executed at the property in Bedfordshire under the Terrorism Act 2000.
It follows Saturday's suspected suicide bombing in Stockholm. Reports suggest the man killed by the blast lived in Luton and studied at the University of Bedfordshire.
Iraqi-born Swede Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly was named in several newspapers as the person who blew himself up as he tried to set off a car bomb in a busy Stockholm street.
After the car caught fire he apparently fled, blowing himself up a short distance away.
Al-Abdaly lists himself on Muslim dating website Muslima as a physical therapy graduate from Bedfordshire University.
Newspaper reports say the bomber was Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly
According to The Daily Telegraph, he lived in Luton and neighbours last saw him two and a half weeks ago.
Tahir Hussain, 33, a taxi driver who lives nearby, told the paper: "I used to see him around often. He didn't say much but seemed nice. I used to see him walking with his kids.
"I was shocked when I heard what happened because I never thought he could do such a thing."
Scotland Yard said: "At 10.55pm last night, Metropolitan Police officers executed a search warrant under the Terrorism Act 2000 at an address in Bedfordshire.
"No arrests have been made and no hazardous materials found."
The suspected bomber was the only fatality caused by the attack on Saturday night although two people were wounded.
Experts said the bomber probably did not succeed in detonating all the explosives and could have caused much greater damage.
An audio file sent to Swedish news agency TT shortly before the blast referred to jihad, saying: "Now the Islamic state has been created.
"We now exist here in Europe and in Sweden. We are a reality. I don't want to say more about this. Our actions will speak for themselves."
Sweden has a military presence in Afghanistan and a Swedish cartoon that depicted the Prophet Mohammed as a dog enraged the Muslim world.
The country had never experienced a suicide bombing.

Re: Car Bomb Blast in Stockholm, Sweden
Just shows how efficient our MI5 and MI6 are!!!! What if this guy was planning an attack in Britain instead of Swede. This kind of
Terrorism is insidious , like land mines and Britain is paying a high price for it"s invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. How many more Soldiers have to die trying to fight an unseen enemy.?

Very true, Panda - but suicide bombers often target civilian populations - and not only against non-Muslim people but also within. Look at the Shia versus Sunni in Iraq itself.
